The Nikon Z series platform is designed to evolve, to add features and functionality as technology advances. Through simple firmware updates, Z series cameras are always at the forefront of imaging technology.

Z9

  • Still Photography
    • Subject detection is now available when [Single-point AF], [Dynamic-area AF (S)], [Dynamic-area AF (M)], or [Dynamic-area AF (L)] is selected for [AF-area mode].
    • Extended the dimensions of focus areas available with [Wide-area AF (C1)] and [Wide-area AF (C2)] AF-area modes.
    • Added [Flat Monochrome] and [Deep Tone Monochrome] Picture Controls. Also added support for “Flexible Color” Picture Controls.

Note that [Distance] is available with Nikkor Z lenses and may not function as expected when used with other lenses.

Z8

  • Changed the specifications for uninterrupted video output to HDMI devices such as external monitors when recording ended.
  • Fixed the following issues:
    • The following [Filtered playback criteria] items marked with a check were deselected after the camera was turned off and on again: [Protect], [Picture type], [Rating], [Select for upload to computer], [Select for upload (FTP)], [Voice memo], and [Retouched pictures].
    • When power was supplied via USB, the camera failed to retain the focus position saved with [Save focus position] set to [ON] in the [SETUP MENU] after the standby timer had expired and reactivated.

  • Video Recording
    • Hi-Res Zoom is now available when the image area is set to “DX”.
    • Added a [Power/Hi-Res Zoom collab]* item to the [CUSTOM SETTINGS MENU] in position of g10.

Note that [Distance] is available with NIKKOR Z lenses and may not function as expected when used with other lenses. The [FX (36×24)] and [DX (24×16)] image areas are available with auto capture.
    • Added a [C15] high-speed frame capture + release mode option.
    • The image quality for high-speed frame capture + can now be set separately from other release modes.
    • [Options] has been added under [Focus shift shooting] in the [PHOTO SHOOTING MENU] to allow [Pixel shift shooting] to be used together with focus shift shooting.
    • [Options] has been added under [Pixel shift shooting] in the [PHOTO SHOOTING MENU] to allow [AE bracketing] to be used together with pixel shift shooting. [Starting storage folder] has also been added.
    • [Pixel shift shooting] options can now be set when the self-timer mode is selected.
    • The Profoto A10’s continuous LED light can now be used as an AF-assist illuminator.

  • Video Recording
    • Added [Birds] to [AF/MF subject detection options] > [Subject detection] in the video recording menu.

    • Added a function to include file names used in the camera when recording videos to an external recorder that supports file name transmission via HDMI. The following Atomos external recorders support this function (as of August 2025).

Z50II

  • • Changed some messages and the default values related to Nikon Imaging Cloud.
    • A new method for adding Picture Controls from Nikon Imaging Cloud is now available.
    • Fixed the following issues.
    - In-camera NEF (RAW) processing would fail when the picture was taken with [Lossless compression] selected for [RAW recording] and [Hi 2.0] for [ISO sensitivity].
    - NEF (RAW) pictures would not display correctly in zoomed-in playback immediately after they were taken.
    - The camera would stop responding when a certain operation was performed in video mode.
    - Charging via USB would be unavailable while an EN-EL25a rechargeable Li-ion battery was inserted in the camera.

  • • Pre-Release Capture is now available using a SmallRig SR-RG2.
