It has come to our attention that some Nikon Binocular and Fieldscope straps may have exceeded the standard values for polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (“PAHs ※1”)  specified in the European Union Registration, Evaluation, and Authorization of Chemicals regulation (“REACH regulation※2”) for selected products.

※1 The strict standard values have been set for the use of PAHs since December 27, 2015. (Annex 17 Entry 50 of REACH Regulation (EC) No1907 / 2006)
※2 The REACH regulation is a legal regulation for chemical substance management in Europe that became effective on June 1, 2007. Generally, under REACH regulations, chemical substances manufactured or imported into the EU in quantities exceeding one metric ton per year are subject to registration, assessment, authorization, and restriction obligations.

Nikon has assessed the situation and can confirm that the potential non-conformity with the REACH regulation would give rise to an extremely small risk to health to users under normal usage.

Nonetheless, as discussed below, Nikon will replace eligible affected straps, as identified in the chart below, free of charge, including shipping, regardless of the warranty period.

We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this will cause. We will strive to further improve the quality, and we ask for your continued support of our products.

Eligible affected straps and how to receive a replacement
Regardless of the warranty period, we will upon request replace any affected straps that were included with Nikon binocular or fieldscope products purchased on or after December 27, 2015, as shown in the chart below with certain serial numbers, free of charge, including shipping, * 3 with a new replacement strap that is compliant with the REACH Regulation. To determine if your strap is eligible for replacement, please consult the chart below.

Upon discovery of this issue, Nikon has immediately suspended any shipments and sales of all potentially affected straps in distribution channels controlled by Nikon in the US, Mexico, Canada and Latin America.

Requesting a Replacement Strap:

Please have your product model, serial number, and strap identification characters   readily available at your visit to our support site. If your strap is among those affected, you will be requested to provide shipping information with regards to receiving a replacement strap. Please note that it will not be necessary to return the affected strap to Nikon to receive a replacement strap.

For anticipated replacement strap shipping start dates, please refer to the chart below.

* 3 Only the strap will be replaced. The main body of your optics product is not affected and therefore not eligible for free of charge replacement.

Identifying Eligible Affected Straps:
Affected straps eligible for replacement were provided with the eligible products with the serial numbers indicated in the following chart and bear the Affected Strap Identification Characters as also shown in the chart.  If your strap bears the Strap Identification Characters indicated in the Replaced Strap Identification Characters column in the chart below, then it has already been replaced and you need take no action with regards to this TSA.
