AF-S NIKKOR 24-85mm f/3.5-4.5G ED VR 4 5 1 1
Very nice walk around/ general purpose lens I've had the lens for about 2 weeks and shoot it on my D700. I've taken about 600 shots with it and can say it is an extremely good value in a very light weight package. Image quality is obviously not up to the highest standards Nikon produces, but considering the relatively low price the IQ far surpasses my expectations. Most importantly, its compact size and versatile focal lengths make it a lens you can keep on and have with you. Any distortion is easily corrected in post and the bokeh is surprisingly pleasing due largely to the rounded diaphragm blades. In all an outstanding value, I highly recommend it. July 6, 2012

Other than the added VR II, does this lens have the same optics as the Nikkor 24-85/3.5-4.5 released in 2002?

Answer:
I'm not referring to the NEWER f2.8-4 - the 2002 version was also an identical focal-length and aperture range - 24-85mm f3.5-4.5 as this new lens. The 2002 version was significantly sharper than the f2.8-4 version as well.

THe Nikon site does not allow comparisons between this lens and the 2002 24-85/3.5-4.5.

Answer:
You can use the comparison tool in our website in order to compare the specifications of both lenses side by side to see the improvements made to the newer model (like Silent Wave motor, VRII etc).

I just want to make sure that I have understood correctly: this lens should be completely compatible with a DX camera (I have the D5000) including the autofocus feature because it has AF-S and IF, correct? I'm really interested in this lens, and I want to make sure it will focus with my camera before I purchase it. Thank you for any help.

Answer:
A lens that is AF-S will autofocus with the d5000, you are correct about needing AF-S to autofocus, that means the lens has a built in focus motor. You need this because the D 5000 does not have a lens motor. The IF only means the lens focuses internally and the end of them lens does not rotate when focusing. This is important when using a circular polarizing filter.

Answer:
The type of sensor format in your camera body is a major consideration in your choice of lens as the angle of view that is recorded on the sensor will vary depending on whether your camera is a DX or FX format. FX format sensors produce an angle of view almost identical to the 35mm film format. DX lenses provide an angle of view close to a 35mm film format lens with a focal length 1.5Xs greater, so a 50mm lens on an DX format sensor DSLR will give the equivalent angle of view to a 75mm lens on a 35mm film format body (50mm x 1.5 = 75mm). Use the Nikon Lens Simulator to see how a photo is affected by camera model and lens selection:

Answer:
It has 2 tubes - the inner-tube rotates, but the outer tube, with the fiter ring, doesn't rotate.

The attachment shows the older (2002 version on the left) and the newer VR version on the right - both at 85mm.
