great overall lens replaced my 18-200 & 70-300 lenses when I upgraded to D800. Very versite. Barrels do not creep (annoying problem w/the 70-300), no barrel wobble (prob w/70-300; one replaced under warrenty). Some internat distortion, but limited. Use for industrial, landscapes, grandkids -- covers a wide range of applications. Very nice to have a single stable, versitile lens when hicking or cllmbing. No need to change out lenses & can carry mounted in a single small bag v pack with several lenses. Wish was nano coated, but otherwise close to perfect. Been shooting w/Nikon bodies & glass since 1975. was concerned glass made in Thailand -- proved to be false concern. Quality appears to be is good as before. Very happy with product. July 14, 2012
Amazing Lens ! Bought this to replace 18-55 & 55-200. This lens has amazing Zoom capacity (best in market). I was on a trip to Florida and at least 3 Nikon owners were impressed with this lens. It captures awesome landscape pictures and close-ups of wild life. Very versatile lens. I am just happy to be able to do everything with 1 lens and not required to interchange lenses as before. This is the future !! July 12, 2012
Smart All Around Lens I did not have very high expectations for a lens with this range. It takes a few practice shots to figure out ISO and Aperture combinations. The results were very good, pretty sharp pictures throughout the range with good saturation and contrast on a cloudy day. I was a bit taken back by the results. . Shoot a flower at 300 mm and you'll see defects that could not be seen with the human eye. The motor is extremely quite and focus is pretty fast. The VRII system is a real benefit for low light shots on cloudy days. The lens is a bit heavy in weight and price wise but absolutely worth it as an all around lens. My camera is a D-7000. Needless to say, I am very satisfied with the performance. July 6, 2012
FINALLY ! A LENS THAT DOES IT ALL AND KEEPS TRUE NIKON QUALITY ! Although I own several Nikon cameras and many Nikon lenses (including five 2.8 Pro models), I am by no means a professional. I started in photography fifty years ago and have formitable knowledge of both film and digital media. For me, as for many, super-zooms always meant a very substantial trade-off in image quality other than the particular "sweet-spot" of the lens. With this 18-300 mm VR zoom, Nikon has finally given us "more demanding" old camera guys a lens that takes us in DX lingo from 27mm to 450mm with first class resolution and image quality across the board and no need to hunt for its "sweet-spot". Wether you are traveling, attending an athletic event, or just walking the streets for fun, this great lens can supply the focal length you need by simply twisting your wrist and nailing the shutter. I have taken about 400 photos with it so far across its entire focal length and NONE have been the soft or displeasing in any way. I am not an easy person to please where image quality is concerned, so trust me, you will love this lens. July 5, 2012
Its not the best but Perfect for Beginners As a begginer, this lens is a whole lot better than my 18-105, not just for the range but for the sharpness as well. July 3, 2012

Answer:
In researching the Nikon website I located the information pasted below. The answer is clearly "yes" the DX lense will function on an FX camera. If I interpret the information below correctly, using a DX lens on an FX camera will result in a cropping effect on the subject because the FX camera will default to its built-in DX crop mode. Net effect is you will not obtain the wide view perhaps desired e.g. a 24mm lens will provide an approximate 36mm view (example cited by NIKON).

PER NIKON:
In digital cameras, the camera's format refers to the size of its image sensor. Nikon makes a DX-format sensor and an FX-format sensor. The DX-format is the smaller sensor at 24x16mm; the larger FX-format sensor measures 36x24mm which is approximately the same size as 35mm film.

Different NIKKOR lenses are designed to accommodate the different camera sensor sizes. In the case of DX cameras with their smaller sensors, corresponding DX lenses have been designed. The DX designation can be found in the lens name, i.e. AF-S DX Zoom-NIKKOR 12-24mm f/4G IF-ED. These lenses are smaller and lighter in weight and address the market's need for affordable, high-performance lenses with a variety of focal lengths and zoom options.

The DX sensor makes possible the production of lighter, smaller cameras, but because it covers a smaller portion of the image projected by the lens, a 1.5x crop factor (so called because the smaller sensor crops the image compared to an image from a 35mm film frame) is introduced. This means, for example, a 24mm lens on a DX sensor camera will provide an approximate 36mm view.

The FX sensor, with more "light gathering" area, offers higher sensitivity and, generally, lower noise. There is, of course, no crop factor present with the FX sensor.

DX cameras have the added benefit of being able to use both DX and non-DX NIKKOR lenses-those lenses without the DX designation in their names, i.e. AF-S NIKKOR 14-24mm f/2.8G ED. And here's why.

Answer:
The lens will fit your D800 and your camera will recognize that it has a DX lens attached. Because the DX sensor is smaller than your FX sensor your images will have less than full pixel count. I believe around half, giving you a 18 mp image.
