Frame your storm photograph before it happens. Remember that the sky is your subject, so dramatic clouds are what you’re framing for, and then you hope that lightning will happen in that space. Keep the horizon in the lower third of the frame with the sky the top two-thirds.

Shooting a lightning storm can be exciting. Use a tripod and set you camera to record a long exposure. With D-SLRs, 15 seconds is a good start, but you may have to use up to 30 seconds, or bulb setting (where the shutter stays open as long as you hold down the shutter button). Because you never know when the lightning will occur, keep shooting for best results. And don’t forget the tripod! Otherwise you’ll have blurry photos.

Try different kinds of framing with your flower shots. Instead of centering the flower, try placing it off to the left or the right of the frame. This will allow for you to be creative with the negative space (areas without the subject). Look for the patterns of other out of focus flowers in the background.

If you accidentally delete your images or see a card error message, stop using the memory card. There is software that can recover your “lost pictures” even if they don’t show up on the camera. Continuing to use the card before running that software on it can ruin your chances of saving those photos.

When you can, transfer your photos from the camera to a computer using an external memory card reader. Take out your memory card and insert it into the reader. It doesn’t rely on battery power (like the camera does when using it to download image and video files) and often can transfer the files faster. Plus your camera is still ready to shoot, even while you’re downloading.

Advanced Nikon lens technologies

The AF-S DX Zoom-NIKKOR 12–24mm f/4G IF-ED combines a wider angle-of-view with optical characteristics that are optimized for advanced DX-format Nikon D-SLR camera sensors. The lens produces a smaller image circle (the size of the image projected onto the sensor), enabling a smaller lens diameter and optimal image quality from center to edge to corner. Its rounded diaphragm makes out of focus elements appear more natural, and its Extra-low Dispersion (ED) glass ensures superior sharpness and color performance.

Silent Wave Motor

AF-S NIKKOR lenses feature Nikon’s Silent Wave Motor (SWM), which represents a significant advance in AF lens technology. SWM uses ultrasonic vibrations—rather than a gear system—to focus the lens, providing incredibly smooth, silent and precise autofocus operation.

ED (Extra-Low Dispersion) Glass

An optical glass developed by Nikon that is used with normal optical glass in telephoto lenses to obtain optimum correction of chromatic aberrations.

AS stands for Aspherical lens elements. This type of lens utilizes non-spherical surfaces on either one or both sides of the glass in order to eliminate certain types of lens aberration.

Select NIKKOR lenses have a focusing mode which allows switching from automatic to manual focusing with virtually no lag time by simply turning the focusing ring on the lens. This makes it possible to seamlessly switch to fine manual focusing while looking through the viewfinder.

IF Lens

A NIKKOR lens in which only the internal lens group shifts during focusing. Thus, IF NIKKORS do not change in size during AF operation, allowing for compact, lightweight lenses capable of closer focusing distances. These lenses will be designated with the abbreviation IF on the lens barrel.

Ultra wide to wide view. Like the lens for it's wide zoom, and F/4 opening, but images are soft and you have to sharpin them alot. Sent the lens to nikon for that problem, but repair said lens was fine. April 16, 2011

Wonderful Lens for a Cropped Sensor Camera This is my go to lens for landscape photography. It is fast, produces wonderful color and is very sharp. I use it on a Nikon D300 body and it gives me a very wide view at 12mm and a great standard wide view at 24mm. April 15, 2011

Excellent Super Wide Zoom The 12-24 f4 zoom is an excellent super wide zoom. Mine has survived 700+ degree fire rooms as well as high humidity while shooting in a fire training building. I can't say enough for how well this lens has held up under the harshest conditions imaginable. I use this on my D200 rather than my D300 in case the whole package goes up in flames. I'm sure the lens would survive though I don't believe the D200 would. April 15, 2011

Finally a wide zoom I loved the old 20-35mm for film cameras. When I switched to digital I was at a loss for there were not any wide lens! 20mm is a third of my vision, and there wasn't anything. Soon after my switch the 12-24mm came out to supply this need. Granted it is an f4, but the competition lens were variable aperture of f4-5.6, horrible. This lens is sharp. Granted there are now other choices, but this range works wonderful for me! April 14, 2011

Fine Architectural lens I use this lens all the time for basic interior and exterior architectural shots. Minimal barrel distortion and chromatic aberration, not a tilt shift, but next best thing for DX sensor. April 14, 2011

Since this is designed for the DX-format is this lens a 12-24 or 18-36 mounted on a D5100?

Keith is correct, its a 12-24, and focal length does not change based on format. It will however give you the same angle-of-view as an 18-36mm lens on a full-frame would.
