When length and close focusing matter most
I use this occasionally on my 300/4 AF-S and 105/2.8 VR macro (on D7000). While AF can work in good light, I usually manually focus. The fact that the minimum focus distance doesn't change results in 2X life size with the 105 and 0.5X with the 300 (at 600mm it's my longest "macro" lens). I have used both combinations wide open, and had acceptable results, but a stop or two helps with IQ.
If you need reach and can't afford the 600/4, this gets you there. If you want more than 1:1 with your 105VR (and a 210mm focal length) this gets you there. If you want a 600mm 0.5X macro lens, this gets you there. If those are places you want to go, get the TC.

Sharp and clear!
I love this teleconverter! I use it with my 70-200 2.8 VRII lens which gives me the equivalent of a 600mm lens on my Nikon D300s. Tack sharp!
Buy it. You won't be disappointed.
I shot the hawk with this set-up. Look at the detail. Unbelievable!

Excellent teleconverter!
This is an incredible addition to the lens arsenal. The bokeh, for me, is just plain smashing than can range from creamy to abstract.
A good solid tripod and shutter release cable are my only recommendations to produce superb images! Well worth the money!!

Worth the wait
I purchased this teleconverter for use with a Nikkor 70-200 VR II but had to wait over 6-months for it. That's how much it is in demand. It was worth the long wait. I have it mounted on a D700 and - with appropriately high ISO settings and that great VR - I can actually hand-hold and get a tack sharp shot. I didn't think I could shoot this rig without a tripod, but it performs admirably well hand supported.

not up to all the hype
Finally received the AF-S Teleconverter TC-20E III after 6 months on order. I think I could get the same quality by cropping and enlarging . Used with 200-400afs manual focus. I have yet to try it with my 200mm f2, but what´s the point when I have the 200-400mm f4

Unfortunately no tc's will fit on the 18-200.
Will this converter fit on Nikkor AF-D 80-200 F:2,8. If it does, are there any limitations?

I am wondering why the newer TC-20E III is the cheapest in cost of the 3 Teleconverters. Usually, cheaper means lower quality or features.
In the reviews I have read I find the usual, some people like it, some don't, answers but the majority seem to feel that the TC 20E III is a good addition and will work just fine with the 70-200 vr1 f2.8 lens. I am puzzled as to why it is the cheapest of the 3 teleconverters. Are the 1.4 and 1.7 converters better quality? Please advise. Thank you. Don

I still do not see how that equates to a cheaper lens. Your answer tends to support my idea that the lens should be more expensive. What is bringing the price down? I don't want to take issue with it, just understand the why's and whatfore's.Oct 10, 2011 by

Answer:
The other converters are not higher qualityIn fact the TC-20III has the latest technology.
There is a lot less degradation than there was in the previous 2x converter
The problem is that the more you magnify an image, the more any defects in equipment or user technique will show..
You are adding more glass elements to the equation than there are in a 1.4 or 1.7x converter.
The higher image conversion will also negatively effect the f stop and light gathering capacity.

There is a list of compatible lens on the Nikon site.It is unlikely that you will like the degradation of any 2x converter on the 80-400.
This lens will have to be focused manually.
The converter will let in less light as the f stop will be increased.
Hopefully the next (AF-S) version will be compatible with all the AF-S Nikkor converters

No, its not compatable, if you try and attach a tc on the back of that lens it will cause damage to both lens and tc.
