Buffer size plays an important role for photographers that
take picture-sequences; this buffer enhancement will be
beneficial for virtually all types of photography!

Buffer size is important for photographers that take picture sequences. For example, during an action sequence, with D1X used in C mode you can shoot pictures at the rate of up to three (3) per second; actual rate will vary with shutter speed in use and/or a camera custom setting selection. During picture taking, photos are temporarily stored in the camera's memory buffer, which holds a maximum of nine photographs at any given moment; capacity varies with file type and other conditions. Once the buffer fills, picture taking will pause until the buffer has passed images through the memory card and space-available resumes.

With the D1X camera's original buffer, a maximum of nine (9) JPEG and TIFF or six (6) NEF raw files can be taken before the buffer fills. Pausing between taking pictures will diminish the potential duration of a buffer pause. If D1X's Custom Setting #36 is turned on to provide zoom viewing during monitor playback, the buffer picture capacity changes to six (6) JPEG and TIFF or four (4) NEF raw files.

File type Buffer Size default Buffer size with
CS#36 on
NEF 6 4
JPEG 9 6
TIFF 9 6

Buffer capacity differs between JPEG/TIFF and NEF raw as a result of each file type's color bit depth. JPEG/TIFF are 8-bit files and NEF raw is a 12-bit color depth file. A portion of the available memory is used for Zoom function when Custom Setting #36 is turned ON.
To effectively increase the D1X buffer size with the net result of enhancing the capacity for sequence photography, photographers can take part in the Service Enhancement for D1X buffer performance program. The following chart details buffer capacity after the Service Enhancement.

File type Buffer Size default Buffer size with
CS#36 on
NEF 14 12
JPEG 21 19
TIFF 21 19

This Service Enhancement will be available exclusively from Nikon Service Centers located in Melville, NY and Torrance, CA at the suggested retail price of $234.00, plus local tax, shipping and handling $12.50.

The following provides you with an update and clarification about the subject upgrades for the D1X.

In order for the camera's system to be able to address the newly expanded memory, installation of the Buffer Memory upgrade into a Nikon D1X requires the simultaneous installation of a special Firmware upgrade Version 5.0. When the Buffer Memory upgrade is installed, the Service Department will simultaneously install special Firmware Version 5.0. For customers that will have the Buffer Memory upgrade installed, they must not install Firmware Upgrade Version 1.1. The Version 5.0 Special Firmware upgrade includes all of the features found in Version 1.1 and also the necessary Buffer Memory upgrade firmware.

Please refer to the D1X and D1H Firmware Upgrade Page for details of the updated functions and compatibility with Nikon Software.

For D1X customers that will not have the Buffer Memory upgrade installed, or for D1H customers, we recommend the installation of Firmware Upgrade Version 1.1.
D1X Buffer Memory upgrade service and Special Firmware upgrade Version 5.0 installation service will be provided at the Nikon Service Centers located in Melville, NY and Torrance, CA.

Firmware upgrade Version 5.0 will only be installed in cameras that have the Buffer Memory upgrade installed. It cannot be installed separately. This service will not be available at the Special Upgrade Center.

Firmware upgrade Version 1.1, recommended for D1X without the Buffer Memory upgrade and D1H is available at the Special Upgrade Center. DO NOT send cameras for Buffer Memory upgrade to the Special Upgrade Center. All D1X and D1H Firmware upgrade requests (except for those who are requesting D1X buffer memory upgrade) must be sent to the Special Upgrade Center.

The Buffer Memory Service Enhancement for the Nikon D1X is limited to installation after the purchase of a Nikon D1X. Dealers will not have D1X models with the additional buffer memory in their stock. Nikon Inc. will only provide D1X Buffer Memory Service Enhancement on request from current owners of a D1X camera. Nikon Inc. will not accept dealers' inventory of D1X for Buffer Memory Upgrade.

Nikon Customers: if you wish to have your D1X camera's buffer enhanced, please forward your Nikon D1X camera to Nikon Inc. at the address indicated and request D1X BUFFER ENHANCEMENT SERVICE.
