Helps to reduce stray light which can cause flare.
Use of specifically engineered Nikon lens hoods is highly recommended.
In less-than-ideal lighting conditions, the performance difference can be substantial.
Bayonet lens hood provided with select NIKKOR lenses.
By reducing the amount of non-essential light falling onto the front lens element, lenses can better achieve their optimum optical performance, producing more saturated images.

No problems Owned this lens hood for a month now with relatively intensive usage and no problems so far. Really convenient compared some other lens hoods I've used. July 24, 2012
So-So Quality I've had this lens hood (and lens# for more than 2 years and yesterday the hood suddenly fell apart when removing it from the lens. The lens gets light-to-moderate use and always receives careful handling. While some may think this failure period is reasonable, I don't. Fortunately, the end cap that holds the springs and release tabs in place broke away cleanly and allowed me to reassemble and super glue them back together. Taping the parts was not robust. Hopefully this fix will last, but I wanted others #and Nikon# to know this part is not made well, especially for its high price #IMO) Despite this experience, I do prefer #and recommend) a snap-on hood as the bayonet styles I have, including the HB-61, are too loose and constantly rotate and fall off with normal handling. disappointment I have owned this lens and hood for over a year - the hood is very cheaply constructed compared to other nikon hoods. The mechanics of the hood are not very durable. Now that the hood has broken into pieces I am finding it just plain difficult to find a replacement. Seems the HB-57 is either very popular or nikon has decide to scrap the hood and not inform owners of the lens. August 23, 2012
Definitely NOT up to Nikon's Standards! I was only able to use this hood once before it fell apart into pieces just like it has with over 15 other reviewers. I called Nikon and found out that this hood, which was included with the purchased lens (see below), is NOT part of the covered warranty. When I asked about the price, I was told to go to this site. Here I found all of these 1-star reviews because of the poor design & craftsmanship. I read some of these reviews to the Nikon rep I was speaking with and she is forwarding them on to someone (who?) to see if something can be done. They need to send this design back to the drawing board & come up with a better made hood for this lens. They should also offer to replace the defective ones at no charge! September 9, 2013
THIS?? is Nikon?? I take very good care of all of my equipment and this thing just fell apart in my hand. I can't believe that Nikon would make something this poorly. May 15, 2013

Answer:
These terrible (Nikon should be embarrassed) lens hoods are also out of stock at on-line dealers. Basically there is not replacement for this lens hood.

Answer:
This is a snap-on hood, how does one rotate it until a click is heard? The one that I have snaps on to front lip of the 55-300mm lens, afterwards it rotates freely around the lens.

It is well known that this hood is horrible, very fragile and expensive. Surely the nikon lens it is made for, the 55-300, is compatible with some other lens hood?

I find the poor quality of this part and the lack of support for the users to be a blemish on the Nikon reputation. Looking for a response that you have a plan to quickly resolve the issue.

What screw-on hood will work with the 55-300mm (58mm) lens? I would think that any screw-on hood for a 55mm lens with 58mm threads should work.
