Key Features

The FT-1 Mount Adapter allows you to use certain legacy F-Mount NIKKOR lenses (those designed for use with Nikon D-SLR/SLR cameras) on the Nikon 1 advanced cameras with interchangeable lenses. The Mount Adapter is attached to the Nikon 1 camera and the F-Mount NIKKOR lens then attached to the adapter. The FT-1 will add an angle of view of 2.7 times that of the F-Mount NIKKOR lens' focal length.
Supports 65 existing F-mount NIKKOR lenses (*as of December 2011)
AF/AE supported with AF-S lenses only. Autofocusing is possible when AF-S lenses are used. Focus mode must be set to AF-S (Single AF) and AF-area mode is fixed at Single-point with only the center focus point used.

As of June 2013, we have updated Nikon 1 camera firmware as well as FT-1 Firmware to support AF-C, (Continuous autofocus). Please check support.nikonusa.com for more information on firmware updates.
The focus indicator (rangefinder) can be used with CPU lenses.
[A] and [M] exposure modes can be used with non-CPU lenses. Aperture is specified using the aperture ring on the lens.
Shooting in Motion Snapshot mode is only possible when focus has been acquired with an AF-S lens.
To use the FT-1, the Nikon 1 camera's firmware must be updated to at least version 1.10.
F-mount lenses mounted on the FT-1 have a crop factor of 2.7×. Enjoy an angle of view equivalent to that of a super telephoto lens when a telephoto lens is used. (Example: When using a 300mm lens, the equivalent angle of view is that of an 800mm lens.)
When using the FT-1 and a compatible AF-S NIKKOR F-Mount lens, users can take full advantage of the Nikon 1's high-speed continuous shooting of 10/30/60 fps. (*When an AF-S lens is used. However, focus is locked with the first shot with continuous shooting.)
[P], [S], [A], and [M] exposure modes can be used with CPU lenses.
Vibration reduction (VR) functions when VR lenses are used. Enable vibration reduction, or specify a setting, using switches on the lens. NORMAL/ACTIVE modes are supported when lenses equipped with these modes are used. VR functions in NORMAL mode when lenses not equipped with the NORMAL/ACTIVE modes are used.
The Smart Photo Selector function cannot be used.

FT Adapter on a V1 This is a wicked cool adapter. I use it on everything from a 55-200 DX to a 20-400 manual focus. DX lens are great everything works and super magnification. I have used many older lens with varying levels of functionality. Exposure and focus are keys to remember. Great tool is that you can zoom the screen into small areas to adjust the focus better. If I weren't having such a ball not lugging my D700 and still getting great shots I would complain more about the price. Sorry Nikon but for a something without glass in it ouch. February 12, 2012
Force Multiplier The Nikon 1 Series provides a small capable camera that can be paired with extremely small lenses (10, 10-30 and 30-110) that provide excellent optical performance in a package that's extremely small and lightweight. For those times when size and weight are not as critical as other factors, this handy piece of gear provides access to all those "F" lenses in the world. I bought the J1 as a gift for my wife (with 10, 10-30 and 30-110 lenses) since it's got sufficient IQ and speed for her photographic needs, but is small and light enough that she'll carry it along. The FT-1 was bought primarily for her to use with the new 50/1.8G that sees little time on my D7000 (75mm is an awkward focal length for me). On the J1 the 50 becomes a 135/1.8 and has proven to be an excellent portrait lens and useful "fast-tele" for her, while still being relatively light weight and ergonomic. The FT-1 works just as advertised and is very solid and well crafted. The only rub is that the Nikon 1 firmware did not originally support the FT-1 and had to be updated, which took about an hour of time reading the instructions, doing the download and swapping cards, etc. Well worth it. Now I just have to keep my wife away from my 300/4 AF-S and the new 85/1.8G when it arrives. February 5, 2012
Exceeds expectations The list of compatible lenses in the documentation is more of a guideline. I have a Tamron 500 mm mirror lens with a Nikon AI adaptor and it works well with my new V1 running in aperture priority mode. Even videos look good. I have quite a few manual Nikkor lenses, as for the past 30 years I have used an F2 and never got around to buying a DSLR. I do product documentation with this camera and the ability to use my existing manual lenses is a big help. December 29, 2011
Nikon 1 V1 Great IQ, easy to use, the FT adapter is fantastic. Low light capture is good, lighting fast autofocus. December 27, 2011

Answer:
Focus assistance with a manual lens is obtained by pressing the OK button, which zooms in to center of the field of view. No indicator light, but sharp focus is possible manually.

While I would rarely use the camera with the adapter, if this option is not available, this would impact my purchasing decision. The fact that I haven't found the part available for pre-order on any website and the fact that it has now disappeard from the list of accessories on the V1 webpage concerns me.

I have tried the following manual Nikkor lenses and they work fine in aperture priority mode:

NIKKOR Ai 35 mm 1:1.4
Zoom-NIKKOR Ai-S 35-105 mm 1:3.5~4.5
NIKKOR 50 mm 1:1.4 Ai 50 mm 1:1.4
Micro-NIKKOR Ai-S 55 mm 1:2.8
NIKKOR Ai-S 58 mm 1:1.2 Noct
NIKKOR Ai-S 85 mm 1:1.4
NIKKOR Ai-S 105 mm 1:1.8
NIKKOR Ai-S 135 mm 1:2.8

The one lens I tried that did NOT work (could not be mounted):
NIKKOR K 24 mm 1:2.8

So far, no surprises, as I didn't expect the 24 mm lens to work.

Can a teleconverter be used ? i.e. TC-14E AF-S II with a 70-200VR .. site suggests not, but does this mean it will damage the mount, certain functions will not work, or nothing works at all?

Answer:
Both the AF-S NIKKOR 70-200 f/2.8G ED VR II and the AF-S NIKKOR 70-200 f/4G ED VR are compatible with teleconverters and with the FT-1. In order to understand any limitations of lenses, teleconverters and the FT-1 combined you would need combine the information found on the below charts.
