Key Features

Shortens recycling time and increases flash capacity.
The SD-9 is an external power source. It can hold up to two sets of four R6/AA-size batteries, ensuring a stable power supply for the SB-900, greatly increasing the number of flashes, and reducing recycling time.
Operates on four or eight AA Alkaline, Lithium or Ni-MH batteries.
The SD-9 is an external high performance battery pack that shortens recycling time and increases flash capacity.

The Speedlight must have batteries in place for the SD-9 to operate.

Very Useful, Yet Somewhat Frustrating I chose the SB-9 because all my other equipment is Nikon. The SB-9 is light and compact and slips onto my belt for convenient usage. It really does recycle my SB910 quickly for multiple, consistent flash bursts and I use it all the time. My only negative is the build quality of the internal battery holder. I've had to send mine back twice in three months for under guarantee repairs. The plastic battery holders inside my SB-9 shear off when inserting the batteries, meaning the AA size batteries are loose inside the holder. Maybe Nikon should use better quality plastic or use another material as the plastic is under stress every time the batteries are removed and replaced. Apart from this, I'm really pleased with the performance of the SB-9. November 6, 2012
Versatile & Easy To Use By itself, on or off camera, it is powerful and easy to use to handle most situations with ease. The iTTl feature works well in quickly changing atmosphers/lighted subjects (Such as Wedding Reseptions and Events). Pair it with one or more 900's with the Remote or Master setting, and let the creativity begin. Would be 5 Stars, but the high temp shut down feature is a catch 22 (Can be avoided by use of the SD-9 Battery Pack). December 3, 2011
sd 9 I have only used this pack a few times but i am suprised how much easier it makes my experience. the flash works when its needed and the extra weight is fine. it may be a bit pricey for a piece of plastic but what isn't? March 12, 2011

What is the sequence for battery use when there are 4 batteries in the SB900 and 8 in the SD-9?

Will the 8 batteries in the SD-9 get used first and then the 4 in the SB-900, or are all 12 batteries drained equally. I ask because I want to know what the overall effect is when I put 8 new batteries into the SD-9, but leave the 4 in the SB-900 unchanged.

Answer:
I believe the batteries in the SD9 are only powering the flash capacitor while the four int the speed light are only powering the on board computer. As long as its attached, the batteries in the pack will drain first under heavy use.

Answer:
They are use equally. The use of the external power source provides a stable power supply, increases the number of flash firing and shortens recycling time.

Answer:
No it actually makes it worst. I got 2 units last week to use for an event and my assistent had to switch between speed lights as they were overheating much faster then they normally did the past, some times the speed light would stop working after 4 shots!
So if anything they made my life worst and now I need to find someone to buy them off me since all they do as add dead wight.

Answer:
Each of two ready-lights (A and B) lights up for each circuit.

• When the SB-900’s power is on, the SD-9 starts to charge the power in sync with the SB-900, and the ready-light lights up in red. The ready-light goes off when the power charge is completed.

• The ready-light blinks in red when there is danger of the SD-9 overheating because of its repeating flash operation (power charge does not start). It stops blinking when the SD-9 is cooled down to normal temperature (power charge is available).

Can you use the Sd9 with the SK-6 flash bracket? I noticed the front power plug on the front of the SK6 but didn't know if it would be able to utilize the Sd-9. I just wondered before I bought it.
