Photo of a man holding the COOLPIX P600 up to his eye, shooting
What can you see with the power of a 60x optical zoom NIKKOR Super ED glass lens? The nuance of your child's expression the moment she scores a goal; the small beads of sweat on a performer's brow during an evening concert; the flittering movements of a bird so far in the distance, it doesn't even notice you. Combine that game-changing zoom power with a CMOS image sensor capable of preserving the fine details of those views, blazing fast autofocus and shooting speeds, a swiveling LCD, manual controls and a battery that lasts up to approx. 330 shots per charge, and you've got one of the most powerful, exciting COOLPIX cameras yet, the COOLPIX P600. What's more? Moments after you capture an extreme close-up, it can appear on your compatible smartphone or tablet for easy sharing. For those seeking zoom power and advanced performance, the COOLPIX P600 delivers.

Does everything I need it to do in a small, light package I've been camera shopping for quite some time, and waited for what I considered to be the best camera with the features I wanted--extended zoom, fully articulated monitor with simple monitor-to-viewfinder switching, one camera to replace a multi-lens SLR collection with flash, motor drive, etc. The HD video capabilites really sealed the deal, as well. I now have one camera that I can take to airshows and camping areas; one that I can keep with me everywhere I go. I've had it for about a week and I couldn't be happier even though I've not given it a thorough workout just yet. To make the best use of the camera I bought the book you can find online about the P600 and I am going through it now so that there is nothing about the camera that I don't understand even if I don't use 80% of the features available. The one recommendation that I have is that you buy a spare battery right up front. On a trip this past weekend my battery gave out on the second day of shooting and I did miss a few opportunities, but only because I did not recharge it the first night and learned that I should go ahead and get the spare battery (which has already been ordered). When my wife saw the camera she decided that it should be hers and I've had to keep a close eye on it since! It's my first Nikon, and I can find no downsides to it. None. It will probably be my last camera, so I wanted to get the one that fits me best and I did. August 7, 2014
A pleasure to use As a street photographer who doesn't particularly enjoy having to change lenses, I find this camera an incredible boon to picture taking. The zoom range is a mind-blower as you can see in my hand-held, uncropped, and unedited images below. Because it's light, it's a pleasure to use, especially when I'm on vacation. The images are tack-sharp and blow up beautifully for my exhibit prints. I would definitely recommend this camera. August 6, 2014
Awesome Zoom for a little light weight camera You can get great photos with this little 60x zoom camera. I use it for birding. It even has a birding setting in the scene mode which let you take continuous photos. You will need a monopod or tripod though for full zoom to be able to get sharp photos. A perfect little light weight camera! This photo was taken yesterday with my brand new P600 on a monopod. June 25, 2014
Magnificient Camera Nikon P600 Amazed with sharpness of the images with 60x+ Zoom. No blurring in the pictures/video. WOW... Numerous advanced camera with latest technology features extended battery life, picture sharpness, Wi-Fi enabled, lens filters, 60x zoom and many more... Camera is more worth than the price for its features. June 16, 2014

Answer:
At certain video settings the P520 will shoot up to 10 still photos per video file. I've used it frequently. If you can't do that with the P600 I would be surprised (and disappointed), given the additional claimed video settings.

Answer:
the Performance series (P) of Coolpix cameras isn't designed to replace either the mirrorless cameras (with the ability to shoot still image while video taping# NOR THE DSLR cameras with a full line of accessories and high performance abilities.

This camera follows a nice history of performance compact cameras with built-in lens - - now at super range! A DSLR with lens to allow close to such focal lengths, would cost far beyond $500 - - but would also sport larger sensor and more of the precious glass which adds clarity and weight as well as $$.

This P600 is ideal for the serious photographer or family shooter on the go: When your phone or small camera isn't allowing quite enough zoom: this is your answer! This category of super zoom began at 10x, 18x and has now jumped from 42x to 60x... boasting optical zoom: the 35mm equivalent of 24x wide and 1440x telephoto! #with additional digital zoom included just shy of 2000!)

The Nikon 1 V3 bridges the Coolpix smaller package and the versatility of the DSLR systems.

Nice job Nikon!

With small cameras with built in flash and built-in lens, there are limitations - - still tremendous reasons for moving to Nikon 1 or DSLR with optional lenses, external flash shoe and optional vertical grip, flashes, filters, tele-converters and more... D3300, D5300, D7100, D610, D800, D4, and the D3x!
...each packed with features and enough limitations to call us to the next level of camera!

YET, to my knowledge, only the Nikon 1 with the mirrorless system allows shooting stills and video at same time. Does anyone know any different?

Answer:
The COOLPIX P600 stores still images, movies and voice memos in numbered folders. A new folder is created when the number of files in the current folder reaches 200, when using interval timer shooting, or when "Reset File Numbering" is performed. Information on using "Reset File Numbering" can be found on page 73 of the Reference Section of the P600 manual. A copy of the P600 manual can be downloaded from this address: https://support.nikonusa.com/app/an...

The reason these cameras freeze up is they create a new folder for each 200 photos. When turned off and back on, it freezes up again while it searches for which folder to store the new photos. Can you please do a firmware that allows continuous file storage in one folder to maximum number of megabites? It would save a lot of returns from those who do not know why it is freezing up. Has Nikon fixed the file folder system with the new P530 and P600?

Answer:
I got the P600 and it is fantastic, Yes, it does the same freezeup when over 200 photos are written to the card, but if you wait a few seconds, it will start up again. It is worth the wait, but Nikon will probably not bother to fix the problem. I have contacted Nikon Tech before about the P510 and P520 but they ignore the problem. Get the highest speed card to help. Sandisk Extreme works well. Copy your files everyday to your computer and external hard drive, then delete all photos and format your card. But again, the camera is incredible and has extreme resolution even at 60x.

Using threaded filters

There are conflicting answers regarding whether or not the P600 will accept filters. It's been stated that a threaded 52mm filter will fit, but a response also states that filters will not fit.

I visited a local store to look at the camera and there are threads at the end of the zoom lense. A clerk took a filter and was able to thread it on the lens.

Does Nikon still maintain that threaded filters can not be used? If yes, why not?

I have been using this camera for about a week with a Vivitar 52 km filter attached. It threads on and off very easily and being a solar filter does not really affect picture quality. I also have a Colin filter system that threads on as well.

Answer:
Yes, there is shutter lag! I bought my p600 last week and have decided to return it. Shutter lag is one of the main reasons. I would not recommend this camera to anyone who is taking bird pictures from a distance unless the birds don't move. By the time the camera focuses the shot is over or turns out blurry. Otherwise it's great for stills.
