Can't beat it IMO When I was building my first custom PC system back in the early 1990's, I installed a Coolscan 2000 in one of the slots on my computer. For its time, it was good for what I needed it for. Finally, several years ago, I upgraded to the Super CoolScan 5000 ED. While it does not come with the ability to slide into my computer tower, it runs rings around what the 2000 was able to do. More capabilies, higher resolution, etc., made this buy (off eBay) one of the smartest things I have done. Even though I was shooting mostly digital at the time, I have more than two decades of b&w negative and Kodachrome film in my files. The scans from this scanner have prompted my return to film using a couple of rangefinder cameras. It is a shame that Nikon has gotten away from film scanners but I understand the reasons. I am noticing, however, that the amount of film being used by young and old photographers seems to be on the rise. Maybe, Nikon will reconsider their decision and reenter the film scanning market. August 9, 2011
Coolscan 5000 - Sad to See It Discontinued This was one of the best scanners for 35mm film and transparencies ever made. I have the Coolscan 4000 and bought a Coolscan 5000 before they became nearly impossible to find. After Nikon stopped making them, they were being sold on eBay for twice their list price. The other scanners now on the market don't even come close to the professional results one gets with the Coolscan 5000. Why Nikon discontinued this superior product is beyond my imagination. Just because digital has taken over the camera market does not mean photographers who shot slides and film for decades are just going to throw away all their images. I wish Nikon would wise up and come out with the next generation of film scanners. April 16, 2011
My second "digital camera" I bought a Coolscan IV (the one that scans at 2,900 dpi) in February 2001, and liked it so much that I replaced it with the Coolscan 5000 ED, which scans at 4,000 dpi. I like this scanner so much that I put off buying a digital reflex until December 2008. I'll still keep it forever because it does it does such a good job of scanning the negatives and slides I took over the decades. It's too bad Nikon stopped selling it. Be sure to snap up this scanner right away if you have more than a small amount of negatives and slides in your archives! April 14, 2011
So good ! I scanned all my old slides and negatives and the results were so amazing that I decided to try film again... image quality is out of this world ! March 1, 2011

Answer:
Accordingly to Nikon it Nikon View was not supported for W7, they recommend using VueScan, I used it and it worked very well, it has two raw formats, DNG and TIFF, but be careful with them, I had some inconveniences, not for opening, but for saving with others programs. The only inconvenience is that you must buy a copy, in order to try you can download a trial version that overwrites your scan with a watermark.

I recently upgraded to Mac OS Snow Leopard 10.6 now I can't use the Nikon Super Coolscan 5000 because when I launch it it says Nikon Scan 4 quit unexpectedly. It probably doesn't help that when I do "get info" the application type says "Application (PowerPC)" and I am on an 2.4 GHZ Intel Core 2 Duo. When I go looking for a new update to Nikon Scan 4 it says that I need to not use their software, I must purchase 3rd party software like Vuescan or Silverfast. Is this the final word from Nikon for mac users?

Answer:
The use of Nikon Scan software with Mac OS 10.5.x or later, is not supported. We suggest trying a third party software option such as Vuescan from Hamrick.com or Silverfast software.

I am digitizing my library of 35mm slides. Many are dental lectures with dental xrays. They are aprox the size of a 35mm slide. The regular slide images are digitizing well. I have the machine set to save in TIFF and 16bit color and Adobe RGB color space. I plan to process the images in Photoshop later.

The XRays are coming out very poorly. Any Ideas how to adjust the machine to scan then better?

Help is appreciated

When the scanner tries to eject the film holder, I can hear knocking noises inside the scanner but the holder doesn't come out. I've tried turning it off and back on with same result. Any suggestions?

Is a service manual available for the scanner?
