Excellent machine in any ways. I was a Canon guy until I found out the quality of Nikon Cameras starting from D200 and D300. We use Nikons at our studio where I work, only one Canon, the original 5D... and 15 D1Xs, which now we are getting rid of because of they are used too long. So, I bought myself a D1x month ago from our studio, I was very impressed with the image quality, sharpness, focusing, built, and everything else... I bought another one as a backup. I was lucky, because I didn't have to pay an arm and a leg for my purchases. I also purchased a 18-55 kit lens and a 50mm F1.8 lens to complete my set :) D1x is the best camera I owned. Before that I had Canon 40D, I sold it, and before that 30D, 350D and a Pentax going way back into mid 90s. NONE of them gave me the results D1x is giving me. If you don't mind to look at a dingy LCD screen in the back, most of the time shows very dark images, I recommend this camera for all uses :) November 26, 2011
Fantastic Camera, even a decade later! Pro-Grade Nikon equipment is built to last, and it does just that and so much more! I bought my Nikon D1x for the high speed normal flash sync of 1/500 second. This is the highest non-FP sync ever featured on a DSLR from any brand. This high speed is useful for sports photography with flash, portrait photography at wide apertures such as f/2.8 when using fill-flash, and many other applications as well. This is one of many great features of this camera body. The body accepts almost every Nikkor lens ever made (with the exception of the very old circular fisheye lenses which are incompatible with Nikon cameras not featuring Mirror Lock Up). This wide compatibility of all lenses from the brand new 24-105 f/4 Zoom Nikkor to the legendary 58mm f/1.2 Noct-Nikkor makes this camera excellent no matter what your style of photography. Focus speed is quick and precise on any traditional mechanical Nikkor-AF lens, and is lightning quick on every AF-S Nikkor AF lens as well. With 5.3 megapixels of resolution in JPG mode and 10 megapixels of resolution in RAW mode when used with Nikon's Capture NX software, this camera is dynamite in the studio and in the field for capturing all the stunning details one could want for product, landscape, portrait, and other photography styles. I use my Nikon D1x for portraits and events, but have used it for sports as well. It shines in all lights. Or should I say it captures all lights? With lightning quick autofocus speed, being built upon the proven Nikon F5 camera body, and giving professional photographers around the world a new standard by which to set their cameras, the Nikon D1x is one of my favorite cameras ever and I don't see that changing anytime soon. This review is written in 2010, nearly a decade after the Nikon D1x was released. It's resolution is still considered quite good for all but the largest prints, and AF speed is still superior to many SLR cameras on the market today. While we may not see this fantastic, rugged, proven camera in stores in its beautiful silver boxes again, we do find them with many professional photographers who still use and rely on the camera ever day. We also find them on the second-hand market, as this camera was wildly popular for several years after being introduced. Bottom Line: A continuation of Nikon's long history of producing the best cameras from any manufacturer for professionals and consumers alike, the Nikon D1x is a fantastic camera even a decade later and is highly recommended by this working professional. Great images, great build quality I just recently bought this camera (used), as my first Nikon digital SLR. I had been buying older manual AI-S lenses to take video and stills on my Canon cameras via adapters. But I figured, why not see what they will do on original Nikon equipment? I've now bought several used Nikon AF and G lenses to take advantage of the AF features. I'm totally impressed with the color and metering in this model! I soon after bought a Fuji S5, but it wasn't such a great improvement over the D1X. I'm now thinking about getting a used D2X to improve the resolution over the D1X. But I love the dreamy quality of the D1X reduced resolution and slight pixel irregularity -- quite artistic! I'm also thinking of accentuating this effect by purchasing a D1H with lower pixel count. The D1X has been a terrific introduction into the Nikon world. October 6, 2010
D1 X I bought the camera used, but she is way better in the quality and pictures then my D 200, how I bought brand new. I love it. August 27, 2010
Loved it, and still do in 2011 I had one for several years and wish I still had it more so now that the batteries are cheaper and better. Many people love the new cameras and always upgrade to the newest. I went from the D70 to the D1X. I sold it when I got my D300 and should have sold the D70. People say I'm a big guy and it fits my hand well, I don't mind the weight. I thought the image quality was very good, never had any complients from clients. Droped it many times and still worked fine... well after the third or forth time had a focus problem that was fixed with a cleaning and adjustment. It has limitations when copaired to antthing newer but if you are in a studio or taking baseball photos in the sun I love it. I wounder how it would be converted to IR? April 14, 2011

Answer:
Wow, a slightly older camera. Either set the camera to shutter priority of manual using the 'mode' button at the front top right, behind the shutter button, I would guess. then you can adjust the (I think) back thumb dial to change the actual shutter speed.

Award Winner

July/August 2002, D1X, Editor's Choice Award

Raw power, Raw speed.  They’re always impressive, but only sophisticated control can make them work fully for you.  And that’s precisely the formula of the Nikon D1x: power, as in a 5.47 effective megapixel CCD, capable, through interpolation, of producing a 16-bit, 34.4-megabyte TIFF file.  Speed, as 3 fps capture up to nine images in a burst, plus image and data transfer by IEEE-1394 (Firewire) interface.  Control, via camera operation consistent with that of the Nikon F5 and F100 35mm models and capture software designed to optimize color reproduction, color balance and exposure management. (The D1x supports sRGB and Adobe RGB color space.) Evolving from the industry-leading Nikon D1 digital SLR, the D1x is designed specifically for professionals who require high image quality for pre-press, advertising, graphic arts, scientific and commercial photography.  Without compromise.
