Nikon 1 Technology: Creative Palette

Creative Palette is a new feature of Nikon 1 cameras that puts creativity at a your fingertips, by allowing you to modify the look of a photo via the touchscreen LCD or multi-selector before you shoot. This new feature was first introduced in the Nikon 1 V3. (Check your camera’s manual to see whether your camera offers the Creative Palette feature.)

When using the Creative Palette feature, the camera will automatically detect one of four scenes: portrait, close-up, landscape or “other” and will then display a ring showing four effects that can be applied to the scene. Brightness, saturation and white balance will change between the different effects as a finger is rotated around the ring or the multi-selector is rotated, so what you see is what you get.

The options available for creatively altering a landscape include: Cross Process, Landscape, Filter Monochrome and Avant-Garde. Portrait options include: Cross Process, High Key, Monochrome and Portrait. The options for close-up images include: Vivid, High Key, Cross Process and Selective Color. The options for the “other” category include: Avant-Garde, Monochrome, Neutral and Cross Process.
