Nikon’s Smart Photo Selector mode, which is incorporated into the Nikon 1 line of digital cameras lets you capture fleeting moments or critical photographs that other cameras may miss.

Set the single mode dial on the back of the camera to Smart Photo Selector, then frame your image and depress the shutter half-way. At that time, the camera starts recording and saving frames to its buffer memory. An icon displays in the LCD that lets you know recording has begun.

Then, depress the shutter all the way to take the shot you want. Once captured, the camera compares the frames captured before you fully depressed the shutter with the one you took. The camera selects what it thinks is the best frame and four best shot candidates, based upon composition and motion, writes them to the media card, and shows them in the sequence of when they were captured.

You can take the camera’s suggestion or choose what you felt was the best photograph of the group. When you view photos taken in the Smart Photo Selector mode on playback, you’ll see the Smart Photo Selector icon displayed on the LCD.
