i use SB-700 AF Speed light more than 1 year.. its perfect... and its also have master slave mode... so that's very helpful for covering a occasions with ttl balance... by the way, its so cheep with its functions...

I got this flash the other day and right out of the box it worked and gave me amazing results. i bought this flash for a project I've been working on and i think it should be perfect. this flash is a must buy for anyone who is doing portraits in a studio

Excellent value
After using my Nikon 18-35 mm lens and getting a shadow I knew I had to purchase a quality external flash. I chose Nikon because I know the flash will be forward compatible with the D800 when it is introduced. The SB-700 fits my needs perfectly. It was easy to use out of the box. The bounce and swivel features give me the coverage I need. I used the flash this week on a trip. My only complaint is with the Incandescent filter. My wife has olive skin. The filter gave her an unnatural hue. I used Photoshop to give her more nature skin tonalities. The florescent filter did a good job under harsh lighting conditions. I did not have any problem with the battery compartment or navigating thru the on-board menus. This is my third Nikon upgrade in the last 12 months. It was a good purchase.

My 1st flash and 2nd and 3rd as well.
Simple to use, everything is in the menu, and full information is in the manual provided.
Works brilliantly with my D7000 with my camera as the commander. The commander built-in option at e3 could control 2 groups on flashes, and it could adjust the power settings, even use TTL for one group and Manual for the other for the SB700. That is very versatile.
Interestingly though, there are options for 3 groups on the SB700. Which means that either a SU-800 is needed if one wants to control each group individually. Or, a firmware upgrade for either the D700 or D7000 will finally allow the camera to control each of the 3 groups individually. I am keeping my fingers crossed.
As mentioned by previous commenter, the lock switch to the Remote and Master might be a bit redundant. I imagine only very careless users will turn all the way to the Remote or Master without realizing.
The control dial is nice with a gorgeous clicking sound when it is spun, but the groves are a bit painful for me if I spin it a lot. Maybe I have tender skin for a guy.
Nevertheless, I like it so much until I bought a 2nd and a 3rd one, now contemplating whether should I get a 4th one..........

Everything I read seems to indicate that I can use the SB-700 wirelessly with my D7000 without an additional command unit. If this is so, how do I set this up, or are there additional accessories I need to make it work?

Yes you can. you can use your camera commander or another commander device like SU-800 (which is even better and faster). But the answer is yes.Answer:
I have this combo also, and yes you can.Make sure the SB-700 is in remote mode, then in the camera, go to the pencil menu, in bracketing/flash, then flash cntrl..., then put it in commander mode. make sure your flash on the camera is popped up, and your all set to go.
Also, it can sync up to 1/320 if you go to the pencil, bracketing/flash, then change the flash sync speed to 1/320.

Yes you can. Just go to your flash/commander menu and turn it off.Answer:
Yes the SB-700 can be used remotely, however, the on board flash has to be used to control it thus technically you cant turn it off as it still has to send a signal to the flash unit. You can set it in the menu to -- but the flash will fire though you may get some residual light from the flash, you could of course buy the SG-3ir which sits on the hot shoe and so stops the residual flash from affecting your images.

The D3100 built in flash is not CLS compatible. In order to do CLS on a D3100 you'll need a SU-800 or a CLS master capable flash (SB700, 900 or 910) unit on the D3100.Answer:

Yes and no, no in that the D5100 has no CLS command built in. You can however use the flash in SU-4 mode but then it would be in manual and you would have to adjust the flash yourself.
I have a D80, with a bracket grip and SC-17 coiled remote cord that extends the hot shoe to the bracket. This worked for an older Speedlight and an N70. Will it work for the D80 and SB-700 and still include the i-TTL function or do I need to upgrade to the SC-28 or SC-29?

I found some additional information in Nikon's support section regarding my original question. It says:Using the SC-17, SC-28 and SC-29 with i-TTL compatible cameras and Speedlights
When an SC-17, SC-28 or SC-29 cable is used for off-camera flash photography with i-TTL compatible cameras such as the D70 or newer DSLRs, correct exposure may not occur if using i-TTL Balanced fill-flash. It is recommended to select spot metering in order for the camera to use standard i-TTL flash metering instead. This will improve consistency of flash exposures when using off-camera flash photography.

You can mount the SU-800 Commander on the camera hot shoe to use the speedlight wirelessly.

Im pretty sure the D3100 doesnt support cls, could be wrong, so you will not have ttl, however, you can set the flash to SU-4 and use it that way it just means that you will have to adjust the flash power manually.You can get third party wireless controllers but again they dont support ttl so again you will have to set up manually if you go down this route.

Galbraith noted that the smaller SB-700 has many of the attributes of the larger, more powerful SB-900 but without its bulk. He added that the new interface is more intuitive to use. Keenan also said that anyone shooting a lot of wireless flash with the older model Speedlights will find the SB-700 "refreshingly quick to set up for remote or master flash duty."
