Good for a beginner
This camera is good for a beginner. It does not really allow you to take pictures at night or in low light very well at all. At this point, after having the camera for three years, it is falling apart. The battery door is coming loose and the camera only works part of the time. I would say that in situations like buying a camera, you want to make an investment in what you are buying, or you will end up in the same situation as me. I will have to buy another camera very soon and I may not choose Nikon because I expected this to hold up much longer. My Pentax digital camera, though old as the hills (2001) it still running and works just fine.

Great Camera...Easy to Use
I love this camera. It is so simple to use and takes fantastic photos. It has a lot of great, easy to use features: still, scene, action, night feature, low light, video, etc.
I used this camera at a NHL hockey game and it took some awesome pictures. The players were skating by so fast and the camera picked up the action shots perfectly. I also used it to photograph some friends playing horseshoes. I was able to catch the horseshoe in mid-air after they threw it. Pretty amazing...
I have also taken the camera to a few low light areas: concerts, DisneyWorld attractions, etc. Again, the pictures came out incredible. The camera took great photos with the low light feature. I didn't even have to use my flash.
It does have a night feature, but, you have to manually adjust the settings. I have never had a problem with taking night pictures (or any other type of pics). It is even great at recording short videos.
I love the fact that it is so small that you can even carry it in your pocket. Very convenient when you don't want to carry a camera bag.
My 80 year old mother just took this camera on vacation with her. All I told her to do was point and shoot. She didn't know how to use all the features and her pictures still turned out great.
One of my favorite features is that you can enlarge and crop your pictures right from your camera. And, you can do this without ruining the original photo.
Worth every penny spent!

Not great!!
This camera is fine for daytime use, but at night it battles to focus on anything at all. I really regret buying this camera, and would advise people to look at other models over this one.

I can't tell how much battery life is left and was wondering where the visual indicator is on the screen. Does it only show up when the battery is low?

When the battery is fully charged there's no indicator. The battery level indicator will appear on the Top left corner of the screen showing a battery half full, this means its low and you need to prepare to charge it. Once the battery runs out of charge you will get a message on the screen "Battery Exhausted" and you won't be able to take more pictures.
I am trying to transfer files from my S550 to my PC laptop (running Windows 7). I have used this computer for a transfer without problems before, but this time the computer won't recognize the camera. I tried downloading the newest version o Nikon viewer software, but that didn't fix it. Is there something wrong with the cord itself perhaps?

On each picture taken with the Nikon Coolpix S550 I see red or yellow vertical line (the line is also visible on lcd). I have found on some website that there might be a problem with bad pixels and I should map it. Have you got any software to do that? or do you know other solution? I can't go with it to a service repair because they charge me a lot :(
