Centering prior to exposure

Nikon's VR (Vibration Reduction) employs an exclusive dual-algorithm system — one to provide an easy-to-see viewfinder image during half-pressing of the shutter-release button, and the other to conduct accurate blur compensation during exposure.
The instant the shutter is released, the algorithms are switched. The VR lens group is reset to the center of the optical axis from any off-centered position resulting from VR operation. Although the shift range of the VR lens unit is limited, centering of the lens ensures uniform shift in all directions, maximizing the VR effect as well as optical performance.
