Donegan liked the menu system of the Nikon 1 cameras due to their simplicity, noting that the V1 “is not a difficult camera for a novice to pick up and use.” Donegan added: “Pick up the V1 and the message is immediately clear: just shoot.” The real achievement Donegan noted, is the speed of the Nikon 1 V1. Donegan said, “All in all, it is a solid debut from Nikon’s new compact system camera,” adding “the V1 looks like one of the stronger compact system camera debuts we have seen yet.

Rob Galbraith posted his review of the Nikon 1 V1 on his website, exclaiming, "Its official: at long last, my weekend carry-about camera has arrived and its called the [Nikon 1] V1." He was impressed with the camera's speedy and accurate autofocus, both when capturing stills and HD video. He said: "When set to NEF or NEF+JPG, the V1 can rattle off more continuous frames than most digital cameras on the market." He also found there to be "almost no perceptible delay in the rear LCD or EVF live view." Of the Nikon 1 video, which is the same system in both the V1 and J1, Galbraith said, "The camera has what is arguably the best video mode of any Nikon."

Terry Sullivan posted his review of the Nikon 1 V1 on the Consumer Reports website, touting the ergonomics and design of the camera. "Overall I was impressed by what this little camera can do without a flash," Sullivan said. He noted that he was also impressed with the various burst modes, using both the mechanical and electronic shutter options on the Nikon 1 V1. Video quality and sharpness were impressive as well. Sullivan stated: "Colors seemed vibrant, and contrast looked very good." Sullivan also appreciated the electronic viewfinder's ability to playback images or video, which he said would be useful when shooting outdoors in bright sunshine.

Gordon Laing posted his review of the Nikon 1 V1 to the Camera Labs website, touting the V1 [and J1] as "one of the fastest cameras I've tested at any price point and in any category." Other features that impressed Laing included the camera's Electronic Viewfinder, build quality, large buffer and battery life. "Quick AF, confident tracking, fast burst shooting and the ability to capture both stills and HD video simultaneously add up to a camera that can simply capture moments that are hard or even impossible to grab with another camera," he said. He concluded by saying that the Nikon 1 system "really is something special"; giving it an overall score of 84%, and considering it a camera worth recommending.

The Nikon 1 system has received the red dot award: product design and red dot: best of the best awards, which is sponsored by Germany’s Design Zentrum Nordrhein Westfalen. The red dot award is given to products released over the past two years that exhibit superiority in functionality, innovation, ergonomics, ecology and durability. The red dot: best of the best award is given to products of "highest quality." The Nikon 1 system includes the Nikon 1 J1 and the Nikon 1 V1 advanced cameras with interchangeable lenses. Notable features of the Nikon 1 V1 include the CMOS image sensor, new EXPEED 3 image processing engine and Nikon 1 lens mount.

Imaging Resource posted the Nikon 1 V1 review by Mike Pasini, Shawn Barnett and Zig Weidelich, touting the camera’s good image quality and ease of use. The editors reviewed the camera along with the SB-N5 Speedlight, FT-1 F-Mount Adapter and a range of 1 NIKKOR lenses. They found the layout of controls on the V1 to be well thought out; with menus that are easy to navigate. The editors found the Nikon 1 V1 to offer pleasing image quality, Full HD with an excellent feature set, lightning fast Autofocus and good dynamic range in the RAW files. They also appreciated that Nikon launched the Nikon 1 V1 with an extensive system of lenses and accessories.

Steve's Digicams posted Mike Flacy's review of the Nikon 1 J1 digital camera, touting the J1's ease of use and appealing features. Flacy noted that the camera is petite and sure to be popular among the style savvy with its variety of color configurations. He said beginners will find the camera super simple to use, while more experienced users will find it offers as much control as they wish to have. The LCD, he noted was bright in most any lighting, even outdoors. Flacy said the Nikon 1 J1 offers pleasing image quality, great shooting performance, with fine detail and low noise. He was also pleased with the video recording results of the camera.

Sanders was impressed with a number of "cool features" as he called them, of the V1, including its ability to snap photos while recording video and the Smart Photo Selection mode. He commented: "My time with the Nikon V1 was thoroughly enjoyable. The sharpness, clarity and noise reduction—on the most light-challenged scenes—is visually refreshing and highly satisfying." Sanders added, "Nikon has a handsome solution in the V1. A modest-to-robust feature set with general ease of use and some intelligent technology make the Nikon V1 a very strong consideration for mainstream photographers looking to capture crisp attractive images."
