HDR (High Dynamic Range)

Exquisite detail in highlight and shadow

In scenes with extreme contrasts, such as bright, sunlit clouds and a foreground deep in shadow, it was once quite difficult to render the textures of both equally. Not any more. D5100 combines two exposures to create an image revealing an extremely wide dynamic range, but with less noise and richer color gradation than ever before.
Capture every detail with remarkable clarity—the D5100 brings image quality in a class of its own.

Stunning image quality

Image quality in a class of its own

Incorporating the latest Nikon D-SLR technologies such as the 16.2MP DX-format CMOS sensor and EXPEED 2 image processing engine, the D5100 delivers outstanding image quality. Its CMOS sensor offers a remarkably wide ISO range (ISO 100 to 6400) with reduced noise which enables you to shoot at faster shutter speeds and capture scenes and subjects with less blur. Handheld shooting and full HD movies come out looking great even in low light.

D5100 18-55mm VR Lens Kit 4.6 5 738 738
bottom line: easy to use, great images, user-friendly controls and menus - great camera The D5100 is my first dslr, (my first Nikon was a Nikon F) and it is a terrific camera. I appreciate the ease of using the menus and the outside controls, the relative light weight of the body, fast focusing and accurate metering, and no noise at reasonable iso settings. The bottom line is it is capable of producing fabulous images. I use both the kit 18-55 mm lens and the 18-200 VRII lens, but the 18-200 is usually on the camera. I have never felt that I was limited by the quality of either lens or camera, and I have grown a great deal by exploring the potentials of both. I frequently have prints made from cropped images and have no problem going to 11X14". (I suppose I could go larger; I just haven't tried it.)One of the reasons I opted for the D5100, rather than the D7000, was the articulating screen. While I do not shoot video, and can't comment on the D5100's video performance, the screen comes in handy so many times, and not just for low or high angle shots. I find it makes it possible to do street photography without confronting people. I can be facing 90 degrees from the people I am photographing, looking at the screen in live view, with the camera/lens pointing at them. On the negative side, and I consider these minor - negligible at this price point - the viewfinder could should show 100% of the scene, and some weather sealing would be appreciated. But as it is, the D5100 is marvelous example of technology in the service of art. July 19, 2012
I'm Not Disappointed I've had my D5100 for about a month, and I discover something new on it almost everyday. I've been doing photography for over 40 years, and before I retired, I was a wedding photographer for almost 15 years. What comes easily for my 5100, used to be, what I called a difficult shot using medium format equipment. So far, and I see no reason for this to change, the exposures and focus have been right on the money. Don't leave the camera set in "P" mode only. Experiment! That's how you get better. Use the built in flash and see your results. I was really surprised with my first flash shots. Skin tones were true, and there was very little shadow. When I used to shoot weddings, I used a portable, studio location kit. I think I can get the same results with this camera, and one of the Nikon SB flashes. However, things aren't perfect. I don't know what criteria was used to determine how many exposures you could get on fully charged batteries, but I don't even come close. I think Nikon claims around 600 exposures, I'm lucky if I get 80. But, since the pack charges in 90 minutes, it's not too big a deal. What I recommend is buy a spare battery pack. And since these packs are lithium ion, the battery power won't fade in storage like the old ni-cd's. All in all, this camera has been a lot of fun to use. I don't know how many algorithms are in the processor, but there must be a bunch. Because of that, a beginner could start with this camera, and grow into it. Which makes me jealous, because all the different wedding shots I used to work hard for, this camera does with ease. July 19, 2012
Fantastic features, great for practically everything! I have had this camera for about a year now, and I absolutely adore everything about it. The swivel screen is really handy when photographing things at awkward angles, as well as protecting the screen when it isn't in use. The fun features (selective color, miniature, etc.) are fun to play with, and, once you get used to the controls for them, very simple to use. I have young cousins, and they love playing with all of the special effects. The camera does get a bit heavy after carrying it around for a while, but I'm sure that could be fixed by investing in a better strap. July 19, 2012
Best for new photo enthusiasts!! I am a novice in DSLR world and I am still learning how to use this camera to the best of its ability. However Nikon have enough pre-defined modes to take pictures in any possible scenario. I just love the camera and it's ease of use. July 18, 2012
great this is an marvelous camera i bought it but is little complicated to use but has a great result... July 18, 2012
Great Camera... Great Features.. Great Bundle.. So Finally I got my first DSLR and was amazed seeing it... This camera has great features and excellent picture quality.. It offers you a lot more than what you would have anticipated... even if you are a beginner for SLR like me, this camera has different preset modes which we can traverse through and learn different photographic skills. I really loved different effects and scene modes it has.. Nightly Black and white effect is my favourite... Coming to video, this camera can shoot in 1080p HD recording, movie and microphone sound quality is excellent. Also, coolest feature is, we can flap the display screen as per our requirement in movie. I got this camera from Cameta Camera with a complete kit. The bundle is great... it has camera one lens, bag, memory card, cleaning kit and much more.. All in one bag.. cool.. isn't it?.. I had also tried D3100 from one of my friend.. But D5100 has much more thing to offer in addition to D3100 like HD recording, effects/scene modes, flap display screen and much more.. I would definitely recommend this camera to everyone who wants to buy an DSLR.. July 17, 2012
Easy for the family!!!! Allows me great flexibility while allowing my wife and children ease of use. Great quality pictures! Would highly recommend to anyone. Does not have the snob factor or pricetag but produces as good of pictures as cameras costing 3 times as much at the 5X7 size. Save your money on a more expensive body and purchase Nikon lenses instead! July 17, 2012
I was just shocked Forget Canon! If the 3200 is the Malibu then the 5100 is the Rolls Royce. The 7000 may be made of alloy and sport more features, but the 5100 is a thing of beauty. You do need the AF-S Nikkor 55-300mm DX ED to round it off. Only a snob needs the 7000. NUF said. July 17, 2012
In Love with this babe Its pretty nice camera even if it half frame one it gave you a diff taste and diff stage July 16, 2012
Great Step UP I've been a point and shooter for 35 years and finally decided to step up to a digital SLR. Did a LOT of research befor I decided on the D5100. I purchased the 5100 about 3 months ago and am still learning about all of the things that I can do with this camera. Meanwhile I;m getting great photos and movies by setting the dial to auto or one of the scene modes. The function buttons seem to be located where they are easy to find and as I use it more I am able to find most of them without removeing my eye from the VF. Speaking of which the view finder is bright, clear and easy to use with all of the info you need visible. I like the autofocus positions in the VF and the ability to move the point of focus, comes in very handy for those off center subjects. I was concerned about the additional weight of a DSLR vs a P&S but I find this is not a problem for me. I added the Nikon 18-105mm lens to my bag which gives me the extra reach I wanted and only adds 4 or 5 oz. to the unit. Love that lens. I am glad I got this camera and expect to have this one for a long time. July 14, 2012
Ease of use This is my first "real camera" and I'm loving it. I've only had it two weeks, but I love the ease of use. Thank you. July 12, 2012
So far, so good! Plan to take a course with a professional photographer to learn how to get the most out of our D5100.. Probably will get a longer than 200mm telephoto lens. July 11, 2012
Better than My Film SLR Years back had a SLR film camera with several lenses. Then went with the digital basic. Upgraded to a Nikon zoom. It was great, but still not there. Then I purchased the D5100 and two zoom lenses. Wow oh wow what a step up. Better than the old SLR. Great pics are so easy. July 9, 2012
Traveling companion! I recently finished a robust trip to Las Vegas and the Grand Canyon! the Nikon D5100 was a pleasure to use the controls are located for "finger" touch and reach. Love the the LCD screen especially out to the side made the sunset pictures easier to shoot! The "Effects" feature is great!! Can't go wrong with this camera. July 9, 2012
Favorite camera ever!! I bought the D5100 as an upgrade from my D40, and absolutely love it!! July 9, 2012
Perfect I bought this camera because I had a very important event I wanted to capture. I took the camera right out of the box and the ease of use made all of my picture look like I was a professional. I couldn't be more please with the ease of use coupled with state of the art technology. July 8, 2012
I love my Nikon D5100 I am so enjoying using my new Nikon camera. The photos are clear and crisp, the camera has so many fun features on it also. So it's just great fun and my picture taking has gone to a whole new level. I'm just delighted with my new camera. July 8, 2012
Easy to use...great overall camera I moved up from a Sony Alpha a100 DSLR and I couldn't be happier! Intuitive controls, takes awesome photo's even with "kit" glass. Video function is good. July 7, 2012
wedding photographer I have always used Nikon camera so I only expect the best. I have to say my new D5100 Nikon is so amazing. There is so much I can do with this camera that I find something new every time I use it. Thank you Nikon for not letting me down. I highly recommend this camera for anyone who loves to take pictures. I am a professional photographer and I love this camera. July 7, 2012
EXCELLENT DSLR Although I am not an expert photographer, I believe that the D5100 is so well engineered with all of it's versatile functions and controls, it could create excellent, professional like photos for the average person. I like to take pictures of the night starry sky utilizing the infrared remote control function and the D5100 is superb. Also, the D5100 feels solid with great hand feel. I am very well pleased and the sale price made this purchase even more pleasing. I expect the D5100 to last and satisfy me for many years. July 6, 2012
awesome camera ever i luv my litlle thing i luv this cam i would recommend the begginers to buy this cam July 6, 2012
Great camera for a beginner I went from using a PowerShot digital camera to the Nikon D5100 and was amazed at the difference. I truly love the interchangable lenses and the flip window to look at my pictures anytime I want. The auto focus is wonderful but I use the manual just as often in order to get the different pictures that I desire. I also like how fast the camera is compared to my other camera. I can take about 4 pictures per second and get my children in action shots that I could not do with my other camera. I was amazed at how easy it was to switch and cannot believe that I did not make the switch sooner. July 6, 2012
Very Happy I am very happy with my new D5100 its is great with unlimited possiblities July 3, 2012
Great camera! Bought for a vacation to the Grand Canyon & Las Vegas, the pictures are awesome! I'm a beginner & have a lot to learn, but it was easy to get started with. Look forward to taking more pictures. July 3, 2012
great camera I went from the d-40 to the d-5100 the 5100 is great with the 50-300 lens July 3, 2012
Bring It I only recently purchased the D5100 and I bring it everywhere I can so that I become accustomed to its features and practice what it offers. I probably erase 20-30 or more shots for any that I keep around because there's no waste but the photons. It provides wonderful depth of field and I don't even know what that means. Actually, what I mean to say is that I'm just an amateur who "thinks in images," and this camera is rapidly becoming an extension of my consciousness (while making me look good as a photographer....). If that includes good depth of field, so be it. July 3, 2012
Love it! My husband gave this to me as an early birthday gift and it's fantastic! We took it on our family vacation to south Florida and it truly made the vacation better. I'm still learning how to use all the fancy functions, but even on auto it takes the most beautiful pictures and videos. I'm very pleased with it and can't wait to learn more! July 3, 2012
I absolutely enjoy my Nikon D5100! Its very user friendly and has so many really cool features! Recommend to any and everyone! July 3, 2012
love it 's great it's the best camera we ever had it's very easy to use . July 2, 2012
Easy to use for first time D-SLR camera I just recently did a major upgrade of cameras in order to take my daughters senior pictures. We upgraded from camera phones to the D5100. Huge jump in capability and features. We bought a package deal that came with an extra lense (55mm to 300mm zoom lense). After going through the user manual and a video that was provided with the camera package we were off shooting pictures around the house to learn some basic uses of the camera. After a week we took it to some local gardens and shows and took amzing picturs of butterflies and flowers. We even went to a Chines Lantern event where we just set the camera to on of the city night scenes and we were off creating more great pictures. The software provided with the camera was very sufficient in manipulating the images and categorizing them. Looking forward to capturing some great senior pictures of our daughter and future memories. July 1, 2012

Answer:
Can anyone attest to the quality of the Bower products (grips or otherwise). I guess being compatible is one thing, but quality is another. If it fits but doesn't work well it's not going to be useful.

Answer:
Possibly, it is not a genuine Nikon grip so you would have to get in contact with the manufacturer with regards to compatability.

Answer:
The warranty is not international. It’s only valid in the region that was purchased. All camera models are warranted by Nikon, Inc. to be free from defects in material and workmanship for one (1) year from the date of purchase. Just need the copy of the receipt of purchased. The warranties for refurbished equipments is 90 days (3 months).

Answer:
Usually one years warranty. There is no worldwide warranty, it is valid for country of purchase only, so if something goes wrong you would have to send it back to the US for any warranty claim.

My D5100 is not autofocusing with my AF VR-Nikkor 80-400mm lens. Should it be? Do I need to adjust some menu setting? Does autofocus not work with this lens because the lens is not an AF-S Nikkor or an AF-I Nikkor? (This lens's autofocus capability works with my D50.)

Answer:
For it to autofocus you need AF-s lenses, the lens you have is not AF-S therefore will only be manual focus on the D5100

Answer:
No, it will not auto focus, unlike your D50, the D5100 does not have a built in screw drive. You are correct, you need AF-S or the older AF-I lenses to get auto focus on the D5100

Answer:
The SB-400 doesn't have a remote feature in order to trigger the SB-800s. In case that you want to use that setup you will need to set both SB-800s as SU-4 that will convert them into slaves and will trigger with any flash perceived (including the one from the camera). Also, you will need to set manually for the exposure.

I have a D5100 and need to use multi-flash units to fire instantly and wireless in auto mode using one commander (camara's hot shoe) and two slaves, mounted on tripods? Which combination of Nikon flash units can I use for this mission critical purpose ie: inside parties, weddings, all under subdued lighting? Will one SB700, mounted on hot shoe and two SB700 mounted on tripods work or all three SB910 units work best? Please keep it simple, Thank You.

Answer:
The D51000 doesn't have a commander mode while using the built-in flash. You can use the SU-800 wireless commander for the SB-R200, SB-900, SB-800, SB-700 and SB-600 Speedlight units. Controls an unlimited number of Speedlights for up to three groups. Provides wireless control up to 66 feet. Offers 4 independent channels for competitive shooting environments.

Does this product (d5100 body only) include everything (battery, charger, strap, software, etc) that would normally come with the kit but minus the 18-55mm lens?

Answer:
The right selection for a lens will depend a lot on the type of photography that you are interesting. Some photographers look for faster lenses (large aperture ex. f/2.8), wide angle, Telephoto, Macro or zoom lenses.
Please visit our website and use the lens finder tool in order for you to make your selection base on your needs.
