Create stunning multi-exposure images with the D5100's built-in HDR (High Dynamic Range) capability.

HDR (High Dynamic Range)

Exquisite detail in highlight and shadow

In scenes with extreme contrasts, such as bright, sunlit clouds and a foreground deep in shadow, it was once quite difficult to render the textures of both equally. Not any more. D5100 combines two exposures to create an image revealing an extremely wide dynamic range, but with less noise and richer color gradation than ever before.
Capture every detail with remarkable clarity—the D5100 brings image quality in a class of its own.

Stunning image quality

Image quality in a class of its own

Incorporating the latest Nikon D-SLR technologies such as the 16.2MP DX-format CMOS sensor and EXPEED 2 image processing engine, the D5100 delivers outstanding image quality. Its CMOS sensor offers a remarkably wide ISO range (ISO 100 to 6400) with reduced noise which enables you to shoot at faster shutter speeds and capture scenes and subjects with less blur. Handheld shooting and full HD movies come out looking great even in low light.

Good Performance for a Good Price It is my first DSLR and I am amazed with it, because it has all the necessary elements that you need when you are interested in learning photography. it has an incredible image quality and color reproduction that I never got from a digital camera and also a good performance in low light conditions. No one of my photos has been modified with special Software, I only convert them from RAW to JPEG, and they were taken using M,P and S modes only. October 4, 2014
it gives all benefits in one.Nice to use it. First of all i would like to say that its looks very gorgeous. So much comfortable to handle. Its picture quality is superb.I think it is all in one. August 11, 2014
Amazing Camera!! The d5100 has allowed me to take the next step in photography. I love using it and can't wait to build my knowledge of photography by continuing to use it. May 31, 2014
Great First DSLR I printed out the complete manual that came on the CD, learned where all of the controls were and took a digital photography class which has got me really comfortable with this camera. I highly recommend that all folks like myself that are new to DSLR cameras and the functions should do this. I know that I am getting so much more out of the creative control functions because I did. I hardly use the auto setting any more. Now it is easy to use, and takes great pictures. I do wish it had a dedicated ISO button. I have assigned the FN button to control the ISO. The kit lens that came with the camera seems to be doing a good job. I bought the 55-200 lens refurbished from the Nikon website. That also works great. I use both lenses regularly. I am so very happy with this camera and the lenses. May 28, 2014
Nice for the price Very good images. Easy to use. Easy to access most shooting modes from the back panel. The swivel screen is a must have for self portraits and video. Wish it had 5 exposure bracketing instead of 3 brackets. I really like its small size and light weight. My particular camera has picture control settings that I have to custom set to get decent results. For what you can get this camera for now as a refurbished model $350 currently on Nikon Store..... its a deal that can not be beat anywhere in photographic bang for the buck. Rock on my brothers... if your looking for a rock solid DSLR on a budget look no further. May 16, 2014

Answer:
Visit the manufacturers' web pages. They will post product compatibility. Also, the camera's software needs to be able to recognize it and create a database.

The 64 is a LOT of capacity! My first priority is for a 10 Mbit speed.

Answer:
The compatibility for each type of lens is listed in the back of the reference manual. if you do not have the manual (you haven't bought the camera) then check for an on-line version. Older lenses do not have all of the functionality. So the lens may work (you can take pictures) but you will be disappointed in not being able to use all of the features of the D5100. For example, I have an 800 mm lens that is fixed at f8. There is nothing electronic about the lens. I bought a Nikon adaptor to use in on Nikon cameras. I set my D5100 to M, then set the f stop at f8. I install the lens and manually focus it. The pictures come out.

The newer lenses give such incredibly clear results, and the features of the D5100 are now state of the art that I want to use the camera to the fullest. I am selling my old lenses and moving into the AF-ED product line.

Answer:
Most Nikkors are F-mount
All FullFrame (35mm) lens including the older for film lens will work.
Only AF-S will autofocus on the D5100.
Any F-mount aftermarket lens will work but they need an internal motor to AutoFocus.
I see no good reason to mount other lens, but an adapter might enable you to use them with manual focus.

Answer:
AF-S 50mm f/1.8G...., remember, all your lens for the D5100 need to be AF-S...., not AF only..., . AF lenses use the cameras internal focus motor (if it has one., D5100 doesn't have), AF-S lenses have their own focus motor inside the lens.

Answer:
The lens, of course, depends on the shots you're going to take and really has little to do with the camera body. I use the new 40mm f/2.8 lens for general-purpose shooting and the 18-200mm zoom for heavy-duty work. The 50mm f/1.4 is particularly valuable for critical work.

I did the flower with the 40mm and the cocktail lounge scene with the 18-200.

I rarely use a flash but, when I do, I always bounce it off the ceiling. For that reason, I have the SB-600, the lowest-priced bounce unit.

Slowing the Burst Rate with Continuous Shutter Release

How do I slow down the burst rate with continuous shutter release? The camera seems to offer only 4 frames per second with burst continuous shutter release. I am trying to improve the focus sharpness of my pictures of a moving image (mainly my son riding his bicycle). I want to slow down the burst rate so that I can give my lens more time to auto-focus, especially in shady light conditions. I would also like to get a slightly greater variety of pictures in say 10 second interval.

Answer:
I don't think you can slow the burst rate, though I guess I'm not positive.
This works with my D3000, but I'm not positive it works with the D5100..
Focus, then take a picture. But instead of holding it there, bring your finger back up to halfway (on the shutter button) and by that I mean bring it up to where you normally would press it to focus. you'll have to press the button each time you want to take a picture, but this way you wont have to focus each time. Sorry if this is confusing, it's a little hard to explain. :(
Hope it works.

Answer:
Do to lack of controls, especially manual,
it is not the choice for Hollywood movies.
However, The AF works pretty good and it shoots
HD1080p at 30fps which makes it very good for home movies
when shot from a TriPod.

I have owned quite a few videocams under $2k and several DSLRs that shoot video including the 5D2 and I prefer the D5100 to VideoGraph the Church Service each Sunday.

Answer:
The D5100 delivers exceptionally high-quality movie performance due to its full HD capability while the latest in Full-time autofocus takes the guess work out of tracking your subjects while in motion.

Answer:
The quality and low light sensitivity with low noise of the 5100 beats out the 5000 so much the it is well worth the price difference new. A used 5000 on an auction site for around three hundred is a tough deal to pass up though.

Answer:
Yes, but you will need current version of Photoshop or Lightroom. Early Adobe software will not compatible with newer cameras.

Answer:
Nikon operates factories all across the globe and each operate to the same high standard. While individual cameras are marked with their country of manufacture we can't make a blanket statement about which camera is produced where.

Answer:
Nikon offers two types of autofocus digital camera bodies: those with a built-in focus drive motor and those which require a lens to have a motor. Cameras such as the D5100 do not have a focus motor in it so they require the lens to have the focusing motor – an “AF-S” lens. While these bodies can use a lens with no focus motor (an “AF” lens) you would have to manually turn the focus ring to bring the subject in to sharp focus.

I purchased my camera a week ago and used the sports mode to try and capture football action. When shooting football I have to follow the player, when I do this the image is blurring....if I hold the camera still it does not blur. I have done this with volleyball, but as a player runs down the field in football all the images are bluring as i use the continuous sports setting. How can I improve this?
