Problem with iPad/iPhone Disconnects fixed? Like others I have experienced disconnects with IOS devices. If you are having this issue try putting the IOS device into "airplane mode" and enable wi-fi only. This both speeds the downloads up and makes the transfer much more reliable. January 16, 2014
Super Slick WiFi Adapter I just bought the WU-1a wireless mobile adapter for my D7100. Easy to set-up and it worked the first time. I have used this WiFi adapter to move pictures to my cell phone with no issues; JPEG, Large Normal, files - so they are big files. Also switched to camera control mode using my Motorola Droid Razr Maxx cell. Again no issues in operating the camera and transfer of files. Love the fact that after you take a picture it automatically downloads to my cell. This is so slick being able to use my cell to see the image and to trip the shutter. Really great and fun and I have not downloaded the online instructions. I love this unit and don't have any concerns in recommending this accessory. One comment on price, at $55 it's a lot of money. It only cost me $3.12 after my gift card. Highly recommended. November 5, 2013
Remove old photos, Move app to sim. At first I had issues with the product until I truly understood the issue. This product attaches to a very high end camera. The said camera D7100 takes huge, nice, brilliant pics. The application will not open if it can not find enough disk space to view the camera's contents, which are also stored on the phone. I did the following. 1. Moved Photos to my IMAC. 2. Deleted the photos from my phone. 3. Moved the app to the SIM. I am running the APP on a BLU (Galaxy knockoff). If it works on this phone it will work on anything. Good Luck. Silk April 23, 2013
This changes everything! Pictures used to stay stuck in my camera until I could download them into my laptop. Now, within seconds, they are transmitted effortlessly into my iphone 5. Thanks so much for a great feature. February 19, 2013

Answer:
Try turning off Bluetooth.

I could successfully connect to my iPad and scroll through images on the card, but as soon as I selected download, immediate disconnect. Didn't matter if itr was 1 picture or 100.

Read elsewhere to turn off bluetooth.

As soon as I did that, no more disconnects - pics transferred without problem.

The Wu-1 was working, but not well as it would not keep the connection very well. Now it will only flash green when the screen on the camera is on, but when it goes to black it stops. I have tried resetting the WU-1 adapter, but that has not worked.

This for the D3200 to the iPhone. Thank you.

Answer:
I did check that I had the current software, so thank you. I realized it was due to the battery. Since the WU-1a takes up so much battery it will not connect when the battery gets below a certain percent. I recharged and now it is working again. Yeah!

Answer:
I would LOVE to see someone develop a third party app for the WU-1a. It is marginally convenient with my D3200 but you have to toggle back and forth between phone and camera to change exposure settings. It would be nice to do everything from the app. It would also be nice to control the file size when sharing. Most people don't want and 10MB photo via text.

Answer:
Nikon offers software development kits (SDKs) free of charge to those developing products and services that incorporate Nikon digital imaging products. Please go to https://sdk.nikonimaging.com/apply/ and fill out the SDK application. Since there is no listing for the WU-1a or D3200 on the form, choose any DSLR from the SDK list. When you get to the page of the form where you enter your contact information please describe your requirements in detail. If an SDK is available that fits your needs you will be sent downloading instructions.

I just bought this and tried it with my D3200 and an Android phone. But I found that the camera disconnects with the phone very frequently. When I try to re-connect, although the Wifi successfully connects to the camera, the app cannot connect with the camera via Wu-1a and prompt to open Wifi settings. I tried both unsecured and secured connections. Same problem. Please help!

Answer:
Presuming the app for Andriod works similar to WMU for iPad, try turning off Bluetooth.

Had the same problem with my iPad - disconnected as soon as I selected transfer.

Read elsewhere airplane mode/bluetooth off corrected the problem.

Sure enough, turn off bluetooth, it works with out a problem.

"Mail,, Facebook, Twitter, Open in Another App", are all good options. When I choose "open in another app", I'd like to use one that isn't on the list that automatically is offered. In fact, I don't know why those apps are offered…(Phonto, Camera + and Evernote (?)). How can I add apps to that list? How do I remove apps from that list? I want to open the photo in apps like Snapseed and Instagram, and then post them online.

Thanks! Tom

Answer:
This is an IOS issue, not Nikon WMAU. if you lunch the photos app and click on one of the pictures taken with the ipad camera, then click the share icon, you will be shown only the apps that came with the IOS. You cannot add to that list or delete any app from that list. It will give an option for facebook even if you delete the facebook app because it was included in the ios update. If you want to upload pictures to instagram, the instagram app has an option in it for uploading pictures. You can navigate directly to the location of the pictures you took with the WMAU and upload them.

Thanks, it's useful to know, that SDK exists. Unfortunately, it's not gonna work for WP 7, because it does not support invoking native code and for WP 8 because it requires dll's compiled for ARM processor instead of x86. But thanks a lot, I think, I'll use sdk in some other projects.

I got me camera on Christmas and have been receiving the same error and just figured it out after reading many blogs. On my android Galaxy S4, I selected settings: Connections; Wi-Fi. Then the list button (to the left of the center button on bottom of phone). Then I selected "WPS push button". Then on the WU-1a device (while connected to the camera & camera turned on) I pressed the WPS button (button below LED) for 5 seconds. My phone connected to the camera in under 5 seconds and now works great. If you have previously discovered the Wi-Fi network for the WU-1a device delete it first to allow it to be rediscovered in WPS mode. Hope this helps.

What type of physical connector does the WU-1a use? Is there a small extension cable available for it so that you do not need to plug it directly into the camera? I have another device plugged into the GPS port and I can't get both it and the WU-1a connected at the same time due to clearance issues between the devices.

Answer:
The WU-1A plugs directly into the camera's accessory port. The accessory port is a Nikon proprietary design, as opposed to a universally recognized standard USB plug/receptacle. Nikon does not make any extension cords or devices that would support using the WU-1A off camera. Nikon cannot offer support or advice on third-party accessories.

In order to get the WU-1a to connect to the D3200, it must have an SD card, a full battery and be using the Wireless Mobile Utility App. This application can be downloaded when going to the Application store for any iOS/Android Device. This application is free to download. Please contact Nikon Technical Support for help with this question if still unable to connect. Answer:
I would say that it is more the S4 having issues, there are numerous reports that the wifi on the phone comes up with this error, have you tried it, if possible, on a different device.

Answer:
Images can be taken remotely using a compatible smart device using the camera's Live View preview on the smart device to frame and compose the subject. The smart device can not be used to adjust settings on the camera.
Notes: Movies can not be viewed using the Wireless Mobile Adapter utility (app) but can be played back by tapping the movie or playback icon to display a list of movie apps and choosing an app from the list.

WU-1a Mobile Application

Nikon has been taking a lot of flak for how useless the initial application is for the WU-1a. There is a very simple and cost effective solution here. Open up the API so developers can create their own applications. I have a windows phone 7.5 phone and if I had access to the libraries for interacting with the WU-1a, I’d write my own application and put it up for free download. Are there any future plans for doing so?
