WT-5A Wireless Transmitter 4 5 1 1
Expensive But In The End Worth It I've had this wireless unit for close to 2 months now and I'm finding it almost (but not quite) indispensable. The iPad and iPhone applications are the most often used. The iPad viewfinder and camera controls are amazing. Change focus with one touch anywhere on the screen. Select new apertures, shutter or switch modes. On the iPhone, my camera back offers more space than the iPhone screen does but the phone has become my de-facto remote release. I've used the wireless file transfer feature but frankly it can be faster to simply stick with the card reader for uploads to your computer. It doesn't help that the wireless port on the camera (D4) is a bit awkward to use as it's difficult to get the port cover far enough out of the way to allow for connecting the WT5. I'll give it 4 stars instead of 5 because of the less than smooth camera connection process I talked about and the price. However, I'm a big fan of going wireless wherever possible and this is a great step forward in getting rid of more cables. July 4, 2012

Answer:
It works in "ad hoc" mode without needing a wlan. It's a connection between the wt-5 & the computer/ipad/iphone. no need for a local wifi network.

View photos on an iPad

Will the WT-5 together with the D4 and iPad allow photos just taken on a D4 to be immediately viewed on an iPad?

Does the WT-5 create a wireless network or is just a peer to peer with the WT5 communicating directly with the iPad?

Is a wireless router required for the communication to work reliably between camera/WT-5 and iPad?

Can the ipad control the camera to take remote photos as in a wireless shutter release?

Answer:
yes.
yes - when in "ad hoc" mode ... several computers/ipads/iphones can view whats taken by the camera; but only one computer can control it.
No router necessary when in ad hoc mode & using http.
yes.

just one comment on what Nikon's answer here stated: as far as I can see your computer/ipad/iphone can only be effective in taking pictures in live view mode.... not able to start stop video. I dont know why they claim that here.

Answer:
You can use the web browser on your iPad to operate camera controls or begin Live View shooting, including starting and stopping HD video and more. The connection should be the built-in HTTP mode.

HTTP Mode: Now you can use the web browser on your iPhone or iPad to operate camera controls or begin Live View shooting, including starting and stopping HD video and more.
PC Mode: Operate the D4 via Camera Control Pro 2. From one master camera, simultaneously release up to ten remote D4/WT-5A combinations.
Image Transmission Mode: Transmit images to an FTP server or computer two times faster than the Nikon WT-4A. .

Very simple; I just want to know if I would need to be in range of a hotspot or if I am given the freedom to use this transmitter out on the field during shoots and weddings at locations where WiFi is nt available.

Thank you.
