HDR (High Dynamic Range)

Exquisite detail in highlight and shadow

In scenes with extreme contrasts, such as bright, sunlit clouds and a foreground deep in shadow, it was once quite difficult to render the textures of both equally. Not any more. D5100 combines two exposures to create an image revealing an extremely wide dynamic range, but with less noise and richer color gradation than ever before.
Capture every detail with remarkable clarity—the D5100 brings image quality in a class of its own.

Stunning image quality

Image quality in a class of its own

Incorporating the latest Nikon D-SLR technologies such as the 16.2MP DX-format CMOS sensor and EXPEED 2 image processing engine, the D5100 delivers outstanding image quality. Its CMOS sensor offers a remarkably wide ISO range (ISO 100 to 6400) with reduced noise which enables you to shoot at faster shutter speeds and capture scenes and subjects with less blur. Handheld shooting and full HD movies come out looking great even in low light.

Good Performance for a Good Price It is my first DSLR and I am amazed with it, because it has all the necessary elements that you need when you are interested in learning photography. it has an incredible image quality and color reproduction that I never got from a digital camera and also a good performance in low light conditions. No one of my photos has been modified with special Software, I only convert them from RAW to JPEG, and they were taken using M,P and S modes only. October 4, 2014
it gives all benefits in one.Nice to use it. First of all i would like to say that its looks very gorgeous. So much comfortable to handle. Its picture quality is superb.I think it is all in one. August 11, 2014
Amazing Camera!! The d5100 has allowed me to take the next step in photography. I love using it and can't wait to build my knowledge of photography by continuing to use it. May 31, 2014
Great First DSLR I printed out the complete manual that came on the CD, learned where all of the controls were and took a digital photography class which has got me really comfortable with this camera. I highly recommend that all folks like myself that are new to DSLR cameras and the functions should do this. I know that I am getting so much more out of the creative control functions because I did. I hardly use the auto setting any more. Now it is easy to use, and takes great pictures. I do wish it had a dedicated ISO button. I have assigned the FN button to control the ISO. The kit lens that came with the camera seems to be doing a good job. I bought the 55-200 lens refurbished from the Nikon website. That also works great. I use both lenses regularly. I am so very happy with this camera and the lenses. May 28, 2014
Nice for the price Very good images. Easy to use. Easy to access most shooting modes from the back panel. The swivel screen is a must have for self portraits and video. Wish it had 5 exposure bracketing instead of 3 brackets. I really like its small size and light weight. My particular camera has picture control settings that I have to custom set to get decent results. For what you can get this camera for now as a refurbished model $350 currently on Nikon Store..... its a deal that can not be beat anywhere in photographic bang for the buck. Rock on my brothers... if your looking for a rock solid DSLR on a budget look no further. May 16, 2014

Answer:
The right selection for a lens will depend a lot on the type of photography that you are interesting. Some photographers look for faster lenses (large aperture ex. f/2.8), wide angle, Telephoto, Macro or zoom lenses.
Please visit our website and use the lens finder tool in order for you to make your selection base on your needs.

I just bought a 32GB SanDisk Ultra SDHC SD memory card to us in my Nikon D5100. I'm currently using an 8GB Sony card. Before I open the blister pack I need to know if this SanDisk card is recommended for use in my D5100. I also have a D70s that I bought an 8GB card to use in conjunction with the 2GB card I had been useing. The 8GB card would not download images properly. I later found that it was not listed in the approved cards for the D70s. I need to know if this 32GB card is recommended for the D5100 before I proceed further but I can't find any documentation to confirm that it is! I need you help! Thanks, "Wilk"

I would check with Rode as to compatibility, the D5100 audio out port is plug and play but not sure of the voltage. Nikon won't respond because your asking about a third party mic and they make the MC-1, designed for use with their cameras.

Yes, the AF-S 35mm 1.8g will have full functions on the D5100. The -S designations means the lens has a built in focus motor required for autofocus with the D5100. Effective field of view would be 52mm.

The D5100 delivers outstanding image quality. Its CMOS sensor offers a remarkably wide ISO range (ISO 100 to 6400) with reduced noise which enables you to shoot at faster shutter speeds and capture scenes and subjects with less blur and come out looking great even in low light. There are detailed articles within Learn and Explore such as the following (below) that will give tips on shooting a wedding.: http://www.nikonusa.com/en/Learn-An...

Answer:
The D5100 has a list of approved memory cards that can be used in the camera. The D5100 can take a Sandisk SDHC card that are 4 GB, 8 GB, 16 GB, or 32 GB and a Sandisk SDXC that is 64GB. Cards with class 6 or faster write speeds are recommended.

Answer:
Press the movie-record button to start recording (the camera can record both video and sound; do not cover the microphone on the front of the camera during recording). A recording indicator and the time available are displayed in the monitor. Note that the built-in microphone may record lens noise during autofocus and vibration reduction. Press the movie-record button again to end recording. Recording will end automatically when the maximum length is reached, the memory card is full, another mode is selected, the lens is removed, or the monitor is closed. For more information on recording videos, please see the User's Manual starting on page 44: https://support.nikonusa.com/app/an...

Answer:
Nikon occasionally offers reconditioned products either directly to customers or through dealers. These products have been carefully reconditioned by Nikon Inc. to meet all factory specifications. Refurbished products may have signs of previous use (minor body wear or other cosmetic indications) but contain all original cables, batteries, manuals and other accessories and are protected by a 90-day limited warranty. International warranties are not available.

Answer:
Only certain lenses are compatible with Nikon Teleconverters. There are no adapters for the ones that aren't compatible, they just won't work either for physical reasons or the maximum f stop would be too high for auto focus.
Here is the compatibility list:
