According to Nikon's website the EP-5B is compatible with AC adapter EH-5. Here is a direct quote: "The EP-5B is required when using the AC adapter EH-5/EH-5a to power the camera."

I can't fit a handgrip battery in my rig. I'd like to power the camera off an external battery.

I understand your question. Nikon doesn't make what you want. A suggestion is to take the EP-5B adapter and the EH-5 to an electronics repair shop. He can use the male connector on the a/ c adapter to make a plug for the battery you want to use. His is assuming he battery you want to use. (you didn't mention that) is the correct voltage. If not I don't know if there is such a thing as a dc to dc voltage converter. I think the right technician can help you.

EP-5B replaces the EN-EL15 battery in the camera, the EH-5a a/c adapter is attached to it to run on a/c power. If your camera does not use a EN-EL15 battery you cannot use this.

According to the Nikon web site info that I have read ... the Nikon EH-6 AC Adapter (now archived) can be used in combination with the EP-5b Power Supply Connector for the D800.... Correct ?

I also noted that the newer Nikon EH-6b AC Adapter is not listed as compatible with EP-5b....

The D800 is only compatible with the EH-5b AC Adapter and the EP-5B Power Supply Connector.
