Sounds like you got a "grey market" import version of your camera. Let me guess: you got a good deal on your camera. Unfortunately, what you didn't get was a warranty, or the appropriate accessories for the US market. Sad to say, some people game the system for their own advantage, and people such as yourself end up paying the price for being taken in by unscrupulous sellers. The bad news is, the only way you can "fix" your adapter is to buy a new one -- either from your local authorized Nikon dealer, or from the Nikon store. "Grey" items are not supported by Nikon USA.
