EH-69P AC Adapter/Charger

The EH-69P is an AC Adapter Charger that can be used to power select Nikon cameras from an AC power source, useful when shooting long sessions. It will also recharge the battery.

Compact, quite light weight, US plug "folds" This came with my S3100 Coolpix camera. It's a switchmode converter that puts out 5 volts up to a bit more than half an ampere. It has a USB connector, which probably means that it is much more generally useful than just for Nikon cameras. Any AC power, worldwide, will operate it; it (naturally) works on 100 volts, found in Japan, up to 240 V, in many places. Works on both 50 and 60 Hz, of course. It's wide-range; no need for a selector switch. I opened it up (voiding the warranty, for sure); inside is what's called a switch mode power converter ('power supply") that not only does the job, but is much lighter in weight than a traditional type with a 50/60 Hz AC line (mains) transformer. As well, it appears to have extraordinary protection from high-voltage AC accidents; in case of downed power lines or lightning, this device should be safer than many. It probably can isolate the USB connector from a few thousand volts on the AC mains plug; it's /very/ safe. The label on the back has an amazing variety of approval logos and related information. Included is the UL logo of Underwriters' Labs in the USA, which sets stringent safety standards. For US power outlets, the plug "folds" inside the housing ("case"), a very nice feature. It's easy to rotate it into working position. Adapters for other worldwide AC mains sockets can be removed (except in Argentina and Korea?) if you want to fold in the plug. It works just fine with the USB cable for the S3100. Mine is made in China for Nikon by Dongguan Powertec Electronics, Ltd. Quality is very good, and they plainly know what they're doing. (I'm a retired electronic tech. with engineering experience.) Another first-rate Nikon-branded product... November 18, 2011
Very Good Camera with large stupid charger P-300 Excellent overall and I would recommend it especially for those who want more control over their camera. Great f1.8 lens at 24mm.. HOWEVER, their charger is beyond counter-intuitive! Compact charger requires long and relatively heavy and bulky multi-use cord. * for charger - **** for the camera August 15, 2011

Laptop has worked great for charging the camera but I'm going on an extended trip and will need to use a plug in adapter, which did not come with the camera. I have a couple already, one from an I-Pad, and one for a cell phone, both will be with me on the trip. The I-Pad has +5v/2amp output, and the cellphone has 5v/7amp output; both have the required USB female plug-in. Will either one of these units work without damaging the camera?

Answer:
All Nikon Coolpix cameras have an auto switching (from 100v to 240V 50hz/60hz) battery charger that will work in most countries around the world. AC adapters have similar characteristics. Always check the specification plate on your other battery chargers or AC adapters as third party products may not support dual voltage systems. We do not suggest the use of third party battery chargers and AC adapters with Nikon equipment.
Note that the power cord included with some Nikon chargers or AC adapter is designed for 110 volt use only. A power cord suitable for the local power system should be obtained on arrival, most airport shops and computer suppliers will carry these items which are typically used for laptop computer power supply connections. Be sure that the new cord you buy fits the Nikon adapter you wish to use it with and that it is rated for the voltage in your new location. While not recommended, a simple plug adapter may be used, but caution should be taken as the cord Nikon supplies is not rated for the higher voltage and may heat or fail.
Some newer Coolpix have included an AC Adapter, like the EH-68P AC adapter, for plugging directly into a wall outlet without the use of a power cord. As with previous chargers, the correct adapter must be acquired for the country traveled to, and fitted to the Nikon AC adapter to allow proper AC connection to the wall outlet.

Answer:
Try it with a backup battery and then verify that you have the correct option selected for the Charge by computer, MENU > SETUP MENU > Charge by Computer. If the problem persists you will need to send the camera and the charger to be evaluated.

The charger is loose fitting into the adapter socket and will not allow the camera to charge. This can only be done using the cable directly into the computer and I do not take my computer on holiday with me!
I am therefore looking for an alternative plug which will be more reliable to use.
