Great Camera in a small package
This is my 5th Nikon I have bought in 40 years, and as always excellent workmanship. The camera is light, easy to use and preforms like my first Nikon which was a Nikkormat FTN. A great camera for the price.

Great quality and very compact!
Great camera for all purposes. You will love it! Nikon J1 will deliver the quality your expecting in every shot.
I'm new to photography but this camera has made it a delight. I would highly recommend it.
I would love for Nikon to produce a back pack for this camera and it's accessories. Every bag I review is to big.

Day 1
I just purchased this camera today! I have a lot to learn but so far I'm getting to know it very well! The manual is very easy to fallow also I'm reading more about the camera on the Nikon website which is also very helpful! I'll attach my very first photo! My dog perfect shot! ;)
P.S
I bought the Camera at Costco for $749.99 Comes with two lenses 10-30mm & 30-110mm
Great Deal!

A great camera
This camera is very responsive, and takes great pictures. I use both a D300 and D700, but when I can't, or don't want to, carry the weight of a DSLR, this camera comes in very handy. It fits nicely in a larger coat pocket, even with the 30-110 attached. The LCD screen is nice, as is the build quality. The built in flash does a decent job.
Using the camera is a pleasure. The time to acquire focus is very good in decent light - it matches the quickness of a DSLR. It also has excellent focus tracking in good light. Unlike a Point and Shoot, pressing the shutter button results in the camera taking a picture (imagine that), instead of a pause while the camera attempts to work out focus, exposure, etc. The image quality is surprisingly good even with the smaller sensor. Focus speed and accuracy decrease as the light decreases, but, while I am used to the focus ability of Nikon DSLRs, the J1 still does a decent job when the light levels decrease. The frame rates available in continuous shooting modes is awesome.
Another thing that prompted my purchase was the camera's video ability. Neither of my DSLRs have the ability to record video, so I wanted something that offered good quality video. The camera's video capability is very good. I don't have a lot of video experience, but am very pleased with the J1's video focus and overall video quality.
A few minor gripes: You cannot turn off the image review. After a photo, or series of photos, the image is displayed on the LCD. A half press of the shutter will clear it, and allow you to continue shooting. Hopefully this will be something addressed in future firmware updates. The use of the Feature button could also be improved. It's use is determined by the shooting mode the camera is in, and what you can use it for is very limited. It would be great if this button could be customized, or used like the INFO button on Nikon's DSLRs, allowing quick access to different shooting settings.

I am a skydiving videographer and part of my job is taking still pictures. The perfect piece of equipment, which doesn't exist to my knowledge, would shoot video while taking about 1.5-2 still shots per second.
Short of that, I would love to have a lightweight camera that would take stills in a continuous shooting mode, again approx 2 shots per second or slightly less. Alternatively, if the camera could be controlled with a tongue or bite switch, that would work as well.
The quality of pictures combined with size/weight make this an attractive for skydiving.
Could this camera work in that capacity?
Thanks!

The New Nikon 1 J1 have a different mount that our D-SLR. You will need to use the FT1 Mount adapter and also verify lens compatibility in the user's manual for the Nikon 1 J1.
Previous Nikon cameras use a sound format in videos that is incompatible with Macintosh iMovie software. The sound was "muxed" ...meaning it was mixed together with the video. To hear the sound on a mac, every clip had to be reprocessed with a third party program which not only adds annoyance and wastes time, but it also changes the date of the movie clip.
I have avoided Nikon products for the last 5 years because of this issue.
Does Nikon still use this video format on the Nikon 1 cameras? Or is the video now fully compatible with iMovie? These cameras create a very exciting intermarket between compact digitals and DSLRs. My fingers are crossed that this issue is no longer a problem for us Mac users!
Thank you!

Is the video format Mac compatible? Can 1080p Nikon movies be played on Mac without transcoding? Can Nikon 1080p movies be directly imported into Final Cut Pro 7, Final Cut Pro 10, and iMovie? Are there any known Mac compatibility issues? I would also like to understand how many hours of Nikon 1080p video a 32 GB card will hold. For me to shell out for another camera, you need to convince me that it meets my needs. Thanks.

I will try and answer the questions. You can view the H.264 video on FCP 7/X/Adobe Premiere 5 but to view it on other programs like Quicktime, you will need to transcode. You should be able to upload the footage you capture and put it onto your mac using FTP 7/X. not sure about iMovie. Nikon DSLRs use compress us B Frame (not sure about 1 Series). Which means that they compress more than Canon does, which uses P frame, so is able to record more. Of course there are limits to the amount of time a camera can generally record for, the Canon 5Dmk2 famously has problems over heating when recording more than about 11/12 minutes of video, because the processor was not designed for video. This has gotten better on cameras but they are not designed for long usage. I can't tell you the length of time a 32gb card will record. you have to include the frame rate in that 24/25/30, which means 24fps will record less than 30fps. The next generation of DSLRs, with the Exspeed 3 processor will be a lot better at shooting video. than current DSLRs, Just look at the 1 series video ability. Not sure that this is much use, I can't say that I am really an expert in video editing.

Answer:
You probably don't have the camera on the right settings. The two important elements of taking a photo are shutter speed and aperture. If you have a fast shutter speed, then you will catch movement better but less light will get onto the sensor, so the photo will be darker. With aperture the larger the aperture example (1.8) the more light that gets onto the sensor, but the more out of focus, areas other than the focused subject become (called bokeh). So a camera with a small aperture (f22) will have a be sharp from though the image but will be darker.I do not know what type of camera you are using, if it is a compact camera, it will generally have different modes, such as sport. This mode will increase the shooting speed of the camera and generally have a more open aperture, but the images will be darker, especially if you are shooting indoors or at night. In auto mode the camera will compensate for the lack of light by slowing down the Shutter speed, which will cause the blur, as the child moves around or your movement if it is a long exposure.
Other ways you can help is to change the ISO, which will increase the cameras ability to shoot in low light, but will start to increase the amount of noise that you get in the photo. use support when taking a photo with a longer exposure. Shoot where there is a good light source, so the shutter speed does not have to be as fast.

There are several options, Depending on your camera, you could well be able to change your camera settings, to take a photo in monochrome. Also a lot of cameras allow you to edit the photo in camera and make it black and white. Personally I always shoot in colour and change everything in post production. As it allows you to have more control and occasionally you like the photo in colour more but it generally is down to what you want. Some people like to shoot in black and white specifically.Has staff answer
