Love it! I like in Kealakekua, Hawaii, and I do a lot of snorkeling and underwater photography, so when I saw this camera in reviews 6-8 months ago, I knew it was one I had to try. Unfortunately the camera was on back order every where I looked. A few weeks ago I contacted Nikon about when they would be available, and they informed me I could order from their site. I got my camera in two days after they received my order, and it was in perfect order. I took it to Honaunau Bay, we call it Two-Step, and took some great photos and movies with it. I was using it in Creative mode, Underwater, and set it for 5 fps burst. In about 45 minutes I had taken 600 shots, and made five videos. The pictures are sharp and clear, with great color. It's a big step up from my old Canon Powershot ELPH 300 HS, that I used with an underwater case. Although it had served me well for several years. I also attached a small inflatable ball with fishing line attached, (24 inches long) to make sure if I lost my grip it would float, and it worked well. For snorkeling in shallower water I might not use the float. I am still getting used to the camera, but it did not disappoint me at all! May 31, 2014
Brilliant! Im a novice photographer. I bought a V1 a year ago in hopes of getting into some more advanced photography. The V1 was complicated and daunting to use out of the normal auto mode settings. Every time I went to P, A or S mode, I got blurry pictures. It broke and I decided I wanted a more durable camera. I decided on the AW1 and convinced myself that i would learn the advanced settings. Well I still cant figure out any of the settings and will keep this one in auto mode, however the auto mode is SO MUCH better than the V1. I could not be happier. If you snap a picture in a dark room the picture comes out as if the lights were on, without using the flash. Its AMAZING. When I snap pictures of my kids moving fast, they are in focus. Having a built in flash is a bonus but I dont think ill ever need it unless its pitch black. March 25, 2014
great little camerta I normally use a D800E housed in a Nauticam housing. That with appropriate ports, lenses and flashes weighs in at over 45 pounds of travel weight. It takes superb underwater photos. I purchased the AW1 to use as a backup camera for snorkeling as it lacked the depth capability of my d800E rig. I have used the AW! underwater on 2 separate trips so far and am very impressed. I shoot raw, auto white balance. auto iso 800, either manual or shutter priority. This little camera is superb! The images, while smaller than the 800E are equal in clarity and appearance. I wish it had 5ATA depth capability then I would seriously be tempted to leave the d800E home. They also need some wider angle of view lenses, 77 degrees is too narrow for underwater wide angle. Fortunately the olympus fcon fisheye converter works great with the 10mm 2.8 lens and give an angle of view of 130 degrees. They also need a macro lens (I did not get to either lens for macro as yet), but something like my 105 in a nikon 1AW version would be nice. Hope they keep the line going, perhaps an AW V3 and deeper depth capability? March 4, 2014
A Truly Amazing Camera! Probably the nicest underwater camera we have used out of 40 cameras and 40 years! We have been using underwater cameras for many years. Recently Go Pros have been the real producer for us, despite its small sensor size. I was pretty familiar with the Nikon 1 and this is approximately a Nikon 1 V3 with added high level protection. I prefer a view finder above the surface but underwater (UW) the LCD is better. I have owned three Nikonos film cameras and I would rate this camera as FAR superior to that serious UW camera. I love my F5, Nikkor lens, my D7100s and a lot of other Nikons.....but this Nikon AW 1 is revolutionary! It is a delightful little, very attractive camera. I bought a white one with the 11-27.5mm lens. The video quality is amazing! The stills are wonderful! The depth gauge really works! Yet there are procedures for using this camera UW, and be sure to follow them! We will have a show on this on the internet since we believe it is so great! Nikon has a real winner here! Water Shock Freeze I have been a Nikon user for a long time, I NEVER owned a small point N Shoot camera before, and in this case a mirror-less interchangeable lens camera that is shock and waterproof. Let me confess - I have been using full sized pro Nikon cameras for awhile, be it film or digital. This camera is not for people like me, but for people that simply enjoy a lighter good quality camera that can go just about anyplace they can without worrying about the environment, My family can grab the camera and start shooting just by pressing the shutter, no need to be frightened or trying to figure it out. Auto focus is fast and accurate and selectable from multipoint to single point, with optional tracking. I find the camera in my adult sized hands a little hard to hold on to, but you can adjust to using it and the controls and menus are simple enough and make sense to me at least after a few minutes behind the screen. No touch screen and no electronic view finder to use - You must compose using the 3.0 inch LCD on the rear. No tilt or swivel. In bright daylight - view-able, but with difficulty. Lens choices for AW are small if you need full weatherproof, but if you don't then you can choose any of the Nikon 1 lens - they all work. The KIT lens does a good job - see attachments. Let me point out, even though this camera is waterproof - condensation can occur inside the camera and lens - when the temperature ranges are very different, meaning - you need to allow the cameras to warm up to the ambient temp to clear the "fog" inside the lens. Moving from a warm to cooler environment can cause this situation. This can happen to any camera. Image quality is acceptable depending on your shooting mode - auto or manual or a variation thereof, you can access the menus to change to M, A or P modes or choose one of the many "artistic" modes such as Panoramic, miniature, soft focus, etc. This camera also can GEO Tag your images with location data, and record your GPS history in a file. The sensor size is smaller than DX cameras, thus detail and quality is not quite as good as the DX standard. If you never shoot DX / FX then you probably will not notice - Images are very good for everyday use and sharing the moment with friends, not to mention again - WATER PROOF. You can access the video mode without mic input, and it lacks HD at 60p, only 60i. Cool features: Slow motion video and image capture. Full res photos while shooting video without interruptions. Fully waterproof, with safety locks on compartments. Geo Tagging. Not so cool features: SMALL SENSOR, one of the smallest on the mirror less markets, along with a very HIGH price tag. The only thing this camera has over most others in this price range is "Water/shock/freeze proof". If you don't need those three things go for the cheaper Nikon 1 or the C word. Recommended for anyone needing a light handheld point N shoot that can go anywhere you go. - If you need a splash proof camera that can go where you go - this may be your camera. Sorry, I don't have any "action" photos of me behind the water ski .. November 20, 2013

I'm here diving in Fiji, in water depths of 80-100'. I'm just a casual recreational diver. The 1 AW1 sounds perfect except for the 50' max depth. I'm currently using an Olympus tough with a housing, which has worked great except for it's now having battery problems. So what to replace it with? Was really hoping for a digital version of the Nikonos V. I would even settle for a 1 AW1 with a housing for depths below 50 feet, but I don't see any mention of pland for a housing? Can you let us know if one is planned?

As the question is asking, I do a lot of shooting where I need to set the exposure myself to get the shot that I want, will the AW1 bring this to the table even though the J series did not?

Without a viewfinder (electronic or optical / TTL) how easy is it to see the screen to take shots? I am looking @ buying one for a cold weather trip where it might be sunny a lot and so the glare would make it hard to see the screen and thus I am also considering a Nikon 1 V2 camera which is not all weather but would be easier to see in the daylight.

Answer:
Nikon 1 V2 is equipped with a 7.5-cm/3-in., approx. 921k-dot, high-resolution LCD monitor. Its air gapless structure integrates the protective glass and LCD panel for a thinner design and increased visibility outdoors, enabling you to enjoy a clearer, more beautiful display of photos and movies. On the Nikon 1 AW1, the 7.5-cm (3-in) monitor displays photos and movies at a crisp 921K-dot resolution. Designed for clear viewing from any angle, the monitor is ideal for sharing playback with others and enlarging images to confirm sharpness. On the Nikon 1 AW1 as well as the Nikon 1 V2, there are brightness settings that can be adjusted depending on the light.

I have an underwater P&S camera already, but there's at least a second delay from when I push the button halfway to focus and when the shutter actually releases. NOT good for moving fish.

How long will the battery last underwater if I'm shooting RAW and using flash for almost every shot? Assume water temperature of 70 - 80 degrees F. When I'm on a snorkeling trip we're usually in the water for 2 hours per snorkel and would need the battery to last that long. It really does need a shoe and flash extender. Flash needs to be away from the camera for good underwater shots.

I often take pictures at 1 to 3 inches length of mechanical items. I need a good camera for that environment. I want to make sure this camera will fit the bill as it is much larger than the old 5meg CoolPix S1 that I'm still using.

Does anyone know how to use this camera to achieve longer than 30 second exposures? Perhaps with a remote or timer? The default bulb mode requires you to physically hold down the shutter button introducing instability from the holder/shooter.

Answer:
Bulb Mode on the Nikon 1 AW1 can only be used when shooting in Manual exposure mode. Bulb Mode will end after approximately 2 minutes. There is no remote compatible with the Nikon 1 AW1. There is a remote mode when using the WU-1b and the Nikon 1 AW1 however this will not allow "Bulb Mode" when using the Wireless Mobile Utility App. Page 55 in the User's Manual explains how to use bulb mode in Manual.: https://support.nikonusa.com/app/an....
