Water Shock Freeze I have been a Nikon user for a long time, I NEVER owned a small point N Shoot camera before, and in this case a mirror-less interchangeable lens camera that is shock and waterproof. Let me confess - I have been using full sized pro Nikon cameras for awhile, be it film or digital. This camera is not for people like me, but for people that simply enjoy a lighter good quality camera that can go just about anyplace they can without worrying about the environment, My family can grab the camera and start shooting just by pressing the shutter, no need to be frightened or trying to figure it out. Auto focus is fast and accurate and selectable from multipoint to single point, with optional tracking. I find the camera in my adult sized hands a little hard to hold on to, but you can adjust to using it and the controls and menus are simple enough and make sense to me at least after a few minutes behind the screen. No touch screen and no electronic view finder to use - You must compose using the 3.0 inch LCD on the rear. No tilt or swivel. In bright daylight - view-able, but with difficulty. Lens choices for AW are small if you need full weatherproof, but if you don't then you can choose any of the Nikon 1 lens - they all work. The KIT lens does a good job - see attachments. Let me point out, even though this camera is waterproof - condensation can occur inside the camera and lens - when the temperature ranges are very different, meaning - you need to allow the cameras to warm up to the ambient temp to clear the "fog" inside the lens. Moving from a warm to cooler environment can cause this situation. This can happen to any camera. Image quality is acceptable depending on your shooting mode - auto or manual or a variation thereof, you can access the menus to change to M, A or P modes or choose one of the many "artistic" modes such as Panoramic, miniature, soft focus, etc. This camera also can GEO Tag your images with location data, and record your GPS history in a file. The sensor size is smaller than DX cameras, thus detail and quality is not quite as good as the DX standard. If you never shoot DX / FX then you probably will not notice - Images are very good for everyday use and sharing the moment with friends, not to mention again - WATER PROOF. You can access the video mode without mic input, and it lacks HD at 60p, only 60i. Cool features: Slow motion video and image capture. Full res photos while shooting video without interruptions. Fully waterproof, with safety locks on compartments. Geo Tagging. Not so cool features: SMALL SENSOR, one of the smallest on the mirror less markets, along with a very HIGH price tag. The only thing this camera has over most others in this price range is "Water/shock/freeze proof". If you don't need those three things go for the cheaper Nikon 1 or the C word. Recommended for anyone needing a light handheld point N shoot that can go anywhere you go. - If you need a splash proof camera that can go where you go - this may be your camera. Sorry, I don't have any "action" photos of me behind the water ski .. November 20, 2013

Need a True Nikonos Replacement - Good to 140' The new AW1 has grabbed my attention, but falls very short for almost all recreational diving. Most dives NEVER end at 49' (unless that's the true bottom). Please give us a true, modern, digital, diving camera system that is good to 140'. I miss the compactness, simplicity, and rugged performance of my Nikonos V w/ dual strobes and Nikonos15mm lens. My current Aquatica housed Nikon D7000 is far too big and complicated for most diving and my Nikonos V w/ Fuji Astia film delivered far better images. Add current and other diving challanges and I'll take my Nikonos V any day....except I can no longer get it or my lenses serviced. I do like the convenience of digital vs. traveling w/ film. This is not an old school rant....I love new technology. However, while the AW1 is great in concept it is short on serious diving performance. Sadly, many diving photographers today seem to be happy w/ a GoPro. I too own two of those. I just returned from our annual diving trip to Maui and there were not nearly as many serious diving photographers as there used to be. Many of those seem to have traded their Nikonos V system for GoPros or point and shoot housed cameras. I fear someday may $7000+ housed DSLR will become extinct as well......not good. November 18, 2014
A failed experiment As a marine biologist who began his career with the Nikonos system, I couldn't wait to get my hands on the AW1. It was not available in India, and I picked up on my very first trip the US. It seemed like the perfect fit, in spite of the slightly fiddly controls. Within a few days of taking the camera to the reef, the screen began fogging, followed by the lens fogging and, within two weeks, the camera flooding completely. This, despite taking every precaution in terms of diving limits etc. To add insult to injury, the service centre in India essentially wrote off the camera without offering any alternatives, suggesting that taking it for a dive a day was pushing the proscribed limits of the camera. This has been one of my worst experiences with Nikon and I sincerely hope that Nikon sets this right if they want to continue with this line. As it stands, this camera is certainly not the all-weather camera it is represented to be, and I won't be surprised if Nikon discontinues it pretty soon as experiences like mine become increasingly common. I am considering buying the AW1, I wan to use it for underwater photography exclusively. I take pictures of babies underwater. I want to know if there is an accesory for wide angle? I don't like to get too far from the baby to capture the whole baby. I also work in an indoor pool, will it work well on low light conditions?
Which of the 2 lenses will work better for this underwater photo sessions?
thanks!

I would get the 10mm f/2.8 lens, it has a 77 degree angle of view (27mm equivalent) The pop up flash also works underwater. Also, purchase the NC filter for the lens to prevent condensation.

Answer:
DX and FX lenses cannot be mounted onto the AW1 unless the FT-1 Lens Adaptor Mount is also being used. Nikon 1 mounts are smaller than DSLR mounts and will not fit a DX or FX lens onto the body.

Answer:
Based on the existing published specs I would make the educated guess that only an external slave flash would work.

I personally would have liked this camera considerably better IF it would have had a hotshoe and a higher flash shutter speed

I'm here diving in Fiji, in water depths of 80-100'. I'm just a casual recreational diver. The 1 AW1 sounds perfect except for the 50' max depth. I'm currently using an Olympus tough with a housing, which has worked great except for it's now having battery problems. So what to replace it with? Was really hoping for a digital version of the Nikonos V. I would even settle for a 1 AW1 with a housing for depths below 50 feet, but I don't see any mention of pland for a housing? Can you let us know if one is planned?

As the question is asking, I do a lot of shooting where I need to set the exposure myself to get the shot that I want, will the AW1 bring this to the table even though the J series did not?

Without a viewfinder (electronic or optical / TTL) how easy is it to see the screen to take shots? I am looking @ buying one for a cold weather trip where it might be sunny a lot and so the glare would make it hard to see the screen and thus I am also considering a Nikon 1 V2 camera which is not all weather but would be easier to see in the daylight.

Answer:
Nikon 1 V2 is equipped with a 7.5-cm/3-in., approx. 921k-dot, high-resolution LCD monitor. Its air gapless structure integrates the protective glass and LCD panel for a thinner design and increased visibility outdoors, enabling you to enjoy a clearer, more beautiful display of photos and movies. On the Nikon 1 AW1, the 7.5-cm (3-in) monitor displays photos and movies at a crisp 921K-dot resolution. Designed for clear viewing from any angle, the monitor is ideal for sharing playback with others and enlarging images to confirm sharpness. On the Nikon 1 AW1 as well as the Nikon 1 V2, there are brightness settings that can be adjusted depending on the light.
