Key Features

The PK-12 is a 14mm Auto Extension Tube. Extension tubes enable a lens to focus closer than its normal set minimum focusing distance, placed between the lens and camera body.
An AI NIKKOR will retain automatic diaphragm and meter coupling functions, letting you compose, focus and meter at a wide-open apertures.
Use one or multiple extension tubes together.
The tubes can also be used for manual exposure control.

Small tools that work Great with my D7000 and AIS or manual lenses. I often combine this with other Nikon extension tubes for increased magnification. The strong-all metal construction gives me confidence. Manual focus is rarely a disadvantage in the macro world and these rings work well. May 27, 2011

Answer:
Nikon offers a range of lenses and accessories to stimulate your imagination and extend your creativity to the world of close-up photography. The PK-12 fit between the camera body and lens either single or in combinations. Nikon cameras using these support them in Manual focus mode only and they are considered non-CPU lens attachments. The PK-12 is compatible with the D3100.

And what about the new PC-E TS 85 mm. How best to get a ratio 1:1 macro with this lens? The PK-13 would be better?

Answer:
You won't get a ratio 1:1 with PK-12 or PK-13. The PK-13 would be better if you want most magnification possible.
