ViewNX 2

Great Initial Workflow Program for RAW Files.
I find ViewNX 2 a very stable and useful first step program when dealing with a full shoot of RAW files. It lets me view and do basic editing on the entire album, and integrates seamlessly with Photoshop 6 for photos requiring more advanced work. The Album View layout is also very well done.

Great for previewing and tagging photographs.
Great product that has always been in my workflow.
The only thing on my wish list is.
that it is not so slow and a memory pig. view nx was a lot faster.

Huge jump from ViewNX
Older version seemed a little clunky, and I could never register PS so that I could open directly from program. ViewNX 2 has solved that issue, plus is a lot faster than any MS or Adobe product. Controls are excellent and well-placed, gives complete metadata and graphics info. It's really loaded with all the right stuff for professionals - I can't believe it's free!
Thanks, Nikon, for continued great support of your products.

It is what it is.
A very good program for viewing your Nikon (NEF) images. It's not meant to be Photoshop CS5! For viewing, rating, and minor editing it does a great job. It is a great second step in my work-flow before I proceed to PS RAW and/or CaptureNX for more advanced editing

good product
It is a good product, easy upload from the camera. All my pics are in NEF format and I can read and edit there convert and e-mail or upload. Simple and easy. Also you can open directly the pictures with NX2 for more serious editing work. Basically it is similar interface as Adobe's bridge but can do a little more. Also very useful is all the information that is used. Another similar product is Apple's Photo.

I'm having awful problems loading ViewNX2 to use with Windows XP and a Nikon S8200. When I connect the camera, it doesn't prompt me to download the photos until I then DISCONNECT the camera, and even when the window does come up, it doesn't give me ANY options as to which programme to use to download. It did briefly let me view the photos that recorded to its internal memory, but it read all the photos on the memory card as MPEGs (despite them being in JPEG format - I know cos I downloaded some via a card reader and they all came up as JPEGs ok), but now it won't read them at all - it doesn't even let me access the camera's internal memory or memory card. Tried uninstalling and reinstalling and rebooting the PC, but it's basically totally unusable. HUGELY frustrating - I've never had this problem with camera software before. Can't even download using any other software.

Thanks Nikonstaff. But I don't understand why it reformatted them all as MPEGs? When I finally downloaded using a card reader, it read them all as JPEGs. I hadn't reset anything from the factory settings - this was the first time I connected up to download, with about 250 photos. This still doesn't explain why I can't access the photos on the camera's internal memory, or now, why the software won't even recognise the camera is connected at all, even though the camera switches on when I connect up using the lead, so power at least is getting through.
I'm not a professional photographer - I'm a serious holiday/leisure photographer and also take around 500+ record photos a month for my work.
(BTW - the link on the notification e-mails you sent me to "see the answer" doesn't work...)

I've downloaded the software off the Nikon site now, and onto a different computer (Windows XP again), but still having the same problem. The software won't even begin to communicate with the camera, it doesn't even recognise the camera is connected to the PC and prompt for a download. The pix on the camera's internal memory is now totally inaccessible - I can't even view it (I briefly could the first time I connected the camera to the PC, but not any more). I eventually downloaded the pix on the memory card using a card reader into the USB port - but surely I shouldn't have to do this with a brand new camera? I'm beginning to think it's the camera rather than the software? This is so frustrating - never had this problem with all the Canon's I've owned. I love using the S8200, but it's not much use if it won't speak to the PC.Jul 16, 2012 by

Answer:
first of all, have you downloaded the most recent version of ViewNX2 from your country's nikon website? it is continuously being updated to address new camera releases, as well as to implement bug fixes and add new features.it also seems that you may be aided by the use of a card reader. i shoot at least 25,000 photos a year with my nikons, and i never connect the camera directly to my computers. indeed, many systems now -- desktops and laptops both -- come equipped with internal SD card slots. while not every provides easy access to the card slot, most of them are at least not too hard to access. especially if your computer supports the new fast USB 3.0 standard, it's a big improvement over the camera's data port.

MPEG formats use three types of compressed frames, organized in a group of pictures, or GOP, to achieve interframe compression. GOPs are defined by three factors: their pattern of I-, P-, and B-frames, their length, and whether the GOP is “open” or “closed”. Please reset the camera: MENU> SETUP> RESET ALL. Also, verify the settings that you have for Image Mode (see page # 71 of the user's manual) and make sure you are using an approved memory card for the COOLPIX S8200.
I just purchased a Nikon S3100 for my wife and see it comes with this software. I have two questions:
1. Can I use it to open RAW .nef files that I shoot with my old Coolpix 8700? I lost the original CD that came with the 8700 and cannot view the .nef files on my new desktop.
2. On your website, a number of low ratings came in from users due to problems with this software. Is their a new version that addresses these issues?
Thanks,
JC

Yes, ViewNX 2 will work with you COOLPIX 8700 as well. Instll the software that came with your D3100, or click the link below, and then one of the links on the right for the download of ViewNX 2. (Top link is for Macs& PC's, bottom is for Windows only). This contains Nikon Transfer as well:http://support.nikonusa.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/61#Anchor-1
I would recommend using memory card reader rather than the camera/USB cable connection. The card reader will be much faster trasnfer times.

Have a search on the Nikon website there might be one on there, though ive had a quick look and cant find one.
While adjusting sharpness, shadow preservation, and brightness in View NX2, I noticed that the JPG image compression was increased reducing the file size. The file size went from 10MB to 3 or 4MB. I didn't notice the compression change til I had edited a lot of images. I had to revert to backups and lost a lot of editing time. Where is the preference setting to leave the image quality at the highest setting when editing images? My camera is a D7000 with images taken at the highest fine image quality.

Going by Nikons responce you cannot change the preference for the JPG save quality/compression ratio.in fact he didnt answer your question at all!
Answer:
JPEG compression quality loss if cumulative, meaning that if you open a JPEG image and edit it (crop, change color, resize, etc.) and resave it as a JPEG mo image quality will be lost. It is a good idea not to repeatedly save as a JPEG. If you're going to edit your pictures a lot it would be a good idea that you start shooting in NEF (RAW). There is more opportunity to edit the file later
Every time I open it, it locks up. I have created a new admin user on my PC as suggested, and downloaded the appliction from the website and it works there, but this is an unsatisfactory solution. All my files are in my original user account. Using Windows XP with SP3

To Nikon staff; there is no way to attach a file following the link you suggested on your reply. That's why I'm answering to my question. Here below some images from the folder whose opening crashes the application. From some test it seems not to be a NEF problem; I've saved the images in JPG format and the problem happens.

I have several raw images I "freecropped" in NK2 and then converted to .jpg files. I took these files to have them printed (at Wolf Camera). As their computers will show you what you're prints will look like, at any size photo, 8 x 10, 10 x 13, 11 x 14, etc. their system would "recrop" my pics cutting off the subjects head and feet. No matter which size I elected to print I would lose a portion of my subject. Is there something I am doing wrong when saving these files such as the size? Is it not possible to convert any photo and print it an any common size? A young woman at Wolf mentioned that this was occuring because of the ratios? Thanks for your help.

Answer:
You will have to crop your images to your desired output size, for example 5x7 or 10x8, free cropping is no good as it is not going to be any print size or ratio hence when you have images printed parts are being cut off.Answer:
