Key Features

Color Control Points: Enhancements for hue, brightness and saturation are as simple as placing a Color Control Point on your image, then adjusting the length of the sliders. For example, Color Control Points are remarkably convenient for changing the color of flowers for better effect against green surrounding foliage. Take a dull gray sky and add blue to change the mood of a captured scene.

Auto-Retouch Brush: Capture NX 2 adds an automatic retouch tool to its image editing toolbox allowing users to seamlessly remove blemishes, dust and other distracting elements from photographs while maintaining the integrity of the image.

Redesigned Interface includes:

  • Customized Workspaces
  • Improved Toolbar function and layout
  • Improved Edit List functionality
  • Newly designed image browser featuring a Favorites Folder
  • Improved Image Resolution adjustments

Features continuing from Capture NX version 1.x include:

  • Color Control Points (improved operation)
  • Black/White/Neutral Control Points (improved layout)
  • Color management control with Soft Proofing
  • Color Aberration Control, D-Lighting (High Speed/High Quality), Image Dust Off, Vignette Control and Fisheye-to-Rectilinear Image Transformation
  • Noise Reduction: global or selective adjustments
  • Distortion Control - reduces pincushion and barrel distortion effects
  • Color Booster
  • Color Balance
  • Contrast/Brightness
  • Saturation/Warmth
  • Photo Enhance (for toning, sepia, black and white)
  • Levels/Curves Editor, LCH Editor, Auto Levels
  • Unsharp Mask, Gaussian Blur, High Pass Filter
  • Add Grain/Noise
  • Contrast: Color Range
  • Colorize
  • Black-and-White Conversion
  • Straighten and Crop Tools

Selection Control Points: Now you can selectively edit photographs without the need to manually outline or mask the area for editing. Simply place a Selection Control Point anywhere on the photograph then choose from almost any adjustment such as D-Lighting, Unsharp Mask or Noise Reduction, while limiting the “reach” of that adjustment to just the selected area.

Shadow/Highlight Adjustment: With just a simple slider adjustment you can easily open up shadows or recover blown-out highlights. Highlight recovery is most effective for RAW (NEF) files however it will work with JPEG and TIFF files as well.

Capture NX 2 features award-winning U Point® technology for precision selection and application of enhancements without complicated selections or layer masks. Designed to closely match the way photographers work with their images, Capture NX 2 is easy to learn and creates the highest quality results.

Capture NX 2 provides the highest quality RAW (NEF) conversions from your Nikon camera and fully integrates with all Nikon software including Camera Control Pro 2, Image Authentication Software, Transfer and ViewNX.

Good Works I liked how easy I can find any and all the information of how the picture was taken. For example; what camera body was used, or what lens was used and at focal length, etc... February 6, 2014
Best results Using it since 2009, with multiple Nikon cameras, I also use competitor products, the best image quality is always obtained by using NX2 and that is by a wide margin. Colors are better, sharpness is better, noise reduction is better. unless the exposure needs a lot of correction, the the competition might be able to recover shadows a bit better. control points, color LCH, color balance high pass, unsharp mask are a few things that I can do better in NX2. Some if this corrections require layers when using other competitor products. Some persistent bugs have lived in NX2 for a long time, but the competition also have a few. used together with color efex pro I have produced my best images using this software. September 16, 2013
The right software I would say this is the right software, this is the one. I've tried others but Capture NX2 is the one that brings better quality and the right options for photographs, photographs taken on Nikon cameras. There is no better choice. You may decide to use other software, there are really good ones, it is also a personal choice, but if you take NEF files, there are no one better than Capture NX2 working together with View NX2. Different from some others reviews I found it easy and intuitive, organized, obvious workflow, comfortable, just right. Those that like a lot a menus, distort pictures, redundant options, it is frustrating. But if you are a photographer it works just like you. Just remember that you will be working with BIG files and processing time depends on the machine you have, but Capture NX2 is faster than some others choices and equals to the tops ones, It is the best for NEF files. Give a month try, but put one thing in mind : this software is for photographers not for graphic artists. September 3, 2013
A great software deserves more updates It's a simple to use, yet powerful software. I use it most of the times even for portrait retouching on "easy" photos. It is possible to apply multiple similar adjustments, something you can't in ACR or LR. Unfortunately it seems that Nikon itself likes the software less than it's users. Updates and new features are almost none. This software deserves more Nikon! January 25, 2013
Wonderful platform but PUHLEESE keep it updated with Nik Plugins I've used this product for three years and was thrilled that it was updated to work with the new Lion OS. Let me be perfectly c;ear, this is a great product. The shortcomings are that updates are slow and sporadic and it doesn't work with the Nik plug-ins except the old Color Efex 3. I would NEVER use anything but NX2 if they would just keep it updated quicker and let Nik make all their plug-ins compatible. This is the most intuitive editing software I've ever used. Answer:
Capture NX 2 should allow you to open a NEF file from the new Nikon D3200 SLR, but apparently the current version of Capture NX 2, version 2.3.1, cannot open a NEF file from the D3200. Hopefully the next version of Capture NX 2 will have that capability added in. In the meantime, I am using DxO Optics Pro 7.5.1 build 401 to open and process the NEF files from my D3200. A trial version of DxO Optics Pro 7 is fully functional for one month. I am not associated with DxO and I am only a satisfied user of the product. I don't understand why Capture NX 2 does not support the D3200. Hopefully, it will soon, and then I will buy Capture NX 2.

Answer:
You can edit and save files as a jpeg, do what ever ajustments you want to do and then click edit - save as and in the file type select jpeg and then save. Or you can run a batch process by clicking on the Batch tab and then when the pop up box opens make whatever changes you need and then click ok to run the batch.
If you want to do a quick conversion I would use ViewNX2 as it is much easier to select which images you want to convert, you can either select the whole folder, or by pressing control and clicking on an image, select individual pictures and then click on the convert button at the top, change the relevent options to suit and click ok. This sounds more complicated than it actually is, give either method a try and use which ever you find easiest.

Nikon announced plans to test this possibility over six months ago. For heaven's sake, how long does it take to make the test? Many of Mac users are moving to Lion and are anxious to know.

I can't afford the full Photoshop, but Elements is looking very appealing.

I'm trying to use NX2, version 2.2.6, with NEF files created in my new D5100. Every time I try to open one of the NEF files it says "cannot load file." Someone in the forum suggested a newer version, but when I check for updates, it says there are none. I tried batch processing one of the files, but it still wouldn't open the new file.

If you registered it online then the serial will be there. Or if open NX2 up in the pc you are currently using click on the about tab and a pop up window will appear with the serial showing at the bottom. Failing that email Nikon directly for their advice.

I lost the product registration key - I keep all my CDs/DVDs in a binder, but forgot to put the cd holder with the product registration key with it. I need to reinstall the program.
I believe I did register the SW.
My Nikon only shows the current HW not SW.

Please advise

Answer:
Contact customer service. They should be able to help. If you can provide the receipt or the name of the original seller, it should be easy.

There are a number of online sellers of counterfeit products. If you bought from those sources, you will need to buy a new version.

For future reference, register you product ID on My Nikon. And keep old versions if you ever upgrade.

Answer:
From my experience, unless the upgrade to W7x64 is accompanied by upgrading your hardware to ALL modern components you will not notice much difference. Oh, and as of version 2.3.0 the Capture NX 2 software does run as a native 64 bit application (can download the installer from Nikon's website) and so will be able to access much more RAM than most consumer motherboards can be stuffed with.

However, with modern hardware, and careful attention to using quality components to build it, everything else will be fast enough to really let the 8GB RAM be utilized. (note: unless you are working with very large NEF files, making many changes, and keeping several NEF files open at the same time, there is a good chance you will not consume more than 1 or 2 GB of RAM)

Remember, computer systems are complete SYSTEMS. Even more so than photography, performance of software can be handicapped by just one part being a bottleneck. Also, 64 bit OS and software does NOT mean faster, but it does allow you to address more RAM natively.

Hope this helps and I wasn't too long winded. :) Cheers!
