Easily damaged
The GP-1 will continue to work with frayed copper wires exposed. The cable will sustain damage from leaving the GP-1 on the hotshoe and continuously putting the camera in a camera bag and taking it out.
The cable makes a large loop from the D700 to the GP-1 which will bend while stored in the bag. A shorter cable, wrapped in mesh would last much longer.

bad cable design
My cable lasted 2 years before it broke. There are two flaws, the elimination of either would probably have saved the cable. First, it sticks out to the side. Putting it into a bag stresses the reinforced portion of the cable. Do this enough times and it will break leaving wires exposed. Second, my fingers have trouble screwing and unscrewing the connection. If it were easier to attach and remove, I would do so.

a necessary evil
Location, location, location! Lost, lost, lost! I love the GP-1 and having the GPS information. However, this cord is the bane of the GP-1's existence. To build such rock hard, quality cameras and produce subpar accessories makes no sense. The issue of the protrusion of the 10-pin connection is real. There needs to be a revised cable that exits up and not out and overhanging the side of the camera. Also, the cost of the replacement cord, that is going to suffer the same fate is too high.

great function, flawed design
I purchased a GP-1 Jan 2009, and by October the CA-10 cord was frayed and GP-1 was unusable. CA-10 was replaced under warranty, and as of July 2010, just like the first one, the replacement CA-10 cord is frayed, but this time it's still making a connection and GP-1 is working.
Very disappointed that the Nikon won't send another replacement cord, and I have to buy a new CA-10 for $45. I had carefully taped both CA-10 cords with electrical tape for reinforcement, too!
And FYI the GP-1 can take 2-5 minutes to acquire a signal sometimes, even outside with clear view of sky. Re-acquisition from powering up is faster once initial acquisition is made.

IS nikon in the process to update the GP-1 Unit and its cable adapters soon? It is a shame that a BIG name in pothography uses so cheap products.
Actually they are not cheap but rather very expensive according to reviews and rating. Buy the way, I have been using Nikon & Nikkors products for over 30 years.
I hope that Nikon comes up with a new and reliable GP-1 and cables in the near future!
