Key Features

Approx. 9-ft. coiled cord with built-in AF-Assist Illuminator for placement of the SB-910, SB-900, or SB-700 off camera. The SC-28/SC-29 makes off-camera TTL flash control easy and assured. With the Nikon D-SLRs, the SC-29 also works as an external AF-assist illuminator.
The SC-29 is approx. 9-ft in length and coiled; and features a built-in AF-Assist Illuminator.

The SC-29 provides full TTL control for Nikon Speedlights when used off camera with Nikon D-SLRs that utilize a TTL hot shoe.

One end slips into the D-SLR's hot shoe and the Speedlight attaches to the other end, when the Speedlight is used off-camera, on a bracket.

Eliminates guesswork I recently jumped from the world of film to digital when I went from a faithful F5 to the D700. The F5 and an old Ftn still sit on a shelf in my library ready to go whenever I need them and over the years, a few other Nikon F series went as trade-ins for several newer versions. As reluctant as I was to go digital, the D700, SB900 and the SC-29 cord all helped to make the transition fairly seamless and opened new chapters of creativity for me. My bag full of Nikon glass all made the transition and a new 400mm zoom also joined the team. The seasonal magazine that I publish has taken on a new look which seems to have pleased the readers. It also helps to have a good local Nikon dealer who has guided me through each step of the way. August 9, 2010
Haven't used it, yet. But there is no Male Hot shoe connection for the remote end to connect to my stroboframe. There is no Male Hot shoe connection for the remote end to connect to my stroboframe. I had to take the hot shoe adapter off of the stroboframe. This fact should be in the details and photos. Also not have a PC socket is a bummer. Its not the first time Nikon has forgotten important parts for a camera. September 17, 2013

There doesn't appear to be a manual for the cord and what I did find online appears to be in anything but English and so small I can read it anyway. It looks like one side sits in the shoe horn, but I"m not sure how the other side attaches to the SB-600 since there are no ports.

Yes, you can use the D700 with the SB-800. When the SC-29 sync cable is used for off-camera flash photography, correct exposure may not be achieve in i-TTL. We recommend that you choose spot metering to select standard i-TTL flash control.

I have a SC-29 I use on a CB-Mini RC bracket with my D700 and SB-800. The extra coiled cord I have to wrap around my lens (most often used - Nikkor 28-70 f2.8 AFS) a time or two. It's annoying.

Can't Nikon offer a short cord version? Like, a 6 inch version instead of 9 feet!?! Seriously, what on earth could a 9 foot SC-29 cable be used for? I have been shooting Nikon for 23 years (EM, FM, FM2, FE2, FA, N2000, F4S, F4E, F5, D100, D2h, D80, D90, D7000, & D700) have had a plethora of brackets over the years - none of them, even in the big hair / big bracket days - ever had a need for 9 feet.

My SB-600 works as expected when placed on the hot shoe of a D300. When I use the SC-29 in between the two, the images are black. The SC-29 AF-assist illuminator on the hot shoe lights up and the flash unit fires. I have also tried using this set-up on my D70 and I have the same issue. I have had the SC-29 for years and it used to function properly. All the external contacts on the SC-29 look fine.

Answer:
no, SC-28 is fine, D5200 has built in AF assist. If you use the AF assist on the SC-29 and it isn't pointed at the subject it won't work.

I'm using the cord with a D7000 & a SB-600. Sometimes I am at concerts where flash photography is not allowed and low light makes focusing difficult. And so I'd like to use the more discrete red AF assist lamp versus the on-board camera AF assist light. I'd like to keep things from getting too bulky so I'd rather not attach my SB-600 flash directly on camera just to use the red focus assist . Is there a way to attach the the SC-29 cord without having a flash on the end of it and have the cord's red AF Assist work? Splice or clip some wires? Thanks.
