It is old but does what it has to do, brilliantly!
I got it for my sb-700 flashlight, and then discovered that it was not necessary as my D7000 has commander flash available. But the SU-4 eliminates the annoying sound of the flash and has perfect timing with my camera, it can also be used with flashes with no wireless features like the SB-400, cool!!

I have a SB-600. I am considering buying a D5100. Is the SU-4 required to use these two together wirelessly? Will the on-camera flash fire the SB-600?

You are correct. The Nikon D5100 built-in flash can trigger (but not command) the SB-600 with the SU-4 attached to it.Note that it is not a wireless commander so iTTL (Nikon CLS) is not available. Instead an old-TTL mode which is (to my knowledge) not available on modern Nikon digital bodies is. However, most people shooting this way will use set the SB-600 into manual mode.
Note that the SB-800 has the SU-4 mode built in. I believe the SB-900 does also.

The SU-4 is a handy wireless accessory that allows two or more Speedlights to be used in multiple lighting setups. By attaching a slave flash Speedlight to the SU-4’s accessory shoe, the SU-4’s built-in light sensor remotely detects when the master, on-camera Speedlight fires to trigger the slave flash unit.

I doubt it. the SU-4 won't fit onto the V1 as it has a completely different flash mount as far as I am aware. The 1 series doesn't have the creative lighting system which is used to trigger and control a slave flash . The minimum camera you need to do it through a pop up flash is the D90, though the D5100 does have the CLS it can't activate through the pop up flash. I am not an expert on the Nikon 1 series though so I could be corrected.Has staff answer

1 - Can I mount the SB-28 on the SU-4 and use the SB-900's 1 unit as the master and the other as a remote unit? What role does the SB-28 play, 2nd remote unit?
2 - Does the SU-4 require a flash unit mounted on the it to fire the remote units or is it self contained once mounted on the D3S?

Does SU-4 receive infrared signal or radio signal?
Hi Nikon, I would like to know if SU-4 receives infrared or radio signal to fire the speedlight, and, for instance, if I place the SU-4 attached speedlight behind some obstacle, say, a wall or outside of the house and have it shot back to the inside where my subject and master unit are, would SU-4 still receive signal from the master unit?

Answer:
HiAccording to the specs for the SU-800, it is infrared, I assume the SU-4 would be the same.
I own the SU-800 and have never had it not transmit a signal, but have never used it outdoors behind obstacle while shooting indoors. The transmission specs for my SU-800 are 66 ft. for transmission range.
I hope this might help you, if not I would contact the service and support team with your question.
