Great Camera Great camera. It does lack one feature that I would have liked and that is panoramic shots with stitching capabilities. June 26, 2012
Nikon cameras get better and better I have a nikon D50 and D70. The D5100 is an exceptionally great camera and my newest addition. I use the SB-800 from my other cameras and the Nikon 18-200vr lense (highly recommend) with the d5100. Great results! I have also been experimenting with other non s type lenses with the d5100 with very good results. In particular, the nikon af 60mm micro nikkor and the older nikon hn-27 500mm reflex nikkor. Price/performance for the D5100 is exceptional. June 26, 2012
Expectations Met and Exceeded I had been using a non SLR zoom digital with OK results but I needed better clarity for close up nature photos. I have experienced Nikon optics in the past so I knew what I needed to do. The D5100 bundle was a perfect fit. While there will be uses for my other camera the D5100 will be my "go to" camera. Outstanding features, sharp pictures and lots of growth potential in this little powerhouse of a camera.YES!!!!!!!!! June 26, 2012
great starter slr! Great tool to start in the dslr world very very happy with it .. I love the effect mode! June 26, 2012
An old dog gets a new toy I am 68 and have found a new toy that is so much fun I can hardly put it down. My new Nikon D5100 is capable of doing so many professional photographic thiings that I will be learning for a long time how to have fun with it. In the mean time I find my self using the preprogrammed settings tha are easily identified to take more pictures than I have ever done before. Our grandson's graduation was the first stop and it was great having a 300 zoom to get up close and personal during the ceremony. We leave for Alaska this week and off to Africa in August. I CAN WAIT!!!!! June 26, 2012
A Lot of Camera for the Money I was very excited when my husband said he wanted to purchase a digital camera. I have always used a Nikon camera and was super thrilled to make the switch to digital SLR! I've only had this one for a week but it so far has exceeded my expectations. Lightweight and comfortable in the hand. I've already bought a 55-200mm lens to give me a bigger range of zoom. I'm not a professional photographer but want more than just a point and shoot. This fit the bill and didn't dent the budget to badly! :D June 25, 2012
Seriously Awesome Camera I am an expecting parent of Twin boys in a couple months so I wanted to get prepared to document the journey. Having majored in Photography when I was in High School and using point and click digital cameras for the last two decades, I wanted to get back into shooting with an SLR camera knowing how well these perform. Well... DSLR. I chose the D5100. This camera is great. It has the coolest presets from all the standards you would expect in high end point and clicks and then blows them all away with special effects like Selective Color, Miniaturizing, and Sketch. I have never seen a camera do this. All the other presets are incredible and allow for quick selection and instant successful photos, but the real power comes in with the manual settings and then the partial manual settings. For instance, you can go full manual and control everything: Aperature, Shutter Speed, ISO, & Focus. Or you may want to jump to only controlling the F-stop and letting the camera do the rest for you. You can do this for Shutter Speed as well. Or maybe your want to control everything manually except the focus. Totally cool options and fexibility. The pictures are as pro quality as you can get and you can even adjust the final product right on the camera with its many editing features. Totally sick! If you are looking for a great (not good) but great camera and you want to basically become the family photographer, and don't have the money to spend on absolute pro equipment, get this camera. Heck, if you are thinking of becoming a pro get this camera! June 25, 2012
Nikon D5100 One of my favorite types of photos is flowers, there is no comparison to my old camera to the Nikon in color saturation and vividness....Spectacular...I had done quite a bit of research in products but I knew that would ultimately by a Nikon camera. The abilities to manipulate the picture are endless. Photography really makes you visualize your world differently. The Nikon D5100 is very sophisticated in it's technology and takes photography to a whole new level. June 24, 2012
what is not to like this camera is simply amazing!!! Great pictures and even better software June 24, 2012
Love the camera This is the first DSLR camera i have owened but so far i love it. It takes excellent pictures and the options are great. I love that you can edit the pictures right on the camera, great speed and just overall great camera. June 24, 2012
Great quality at a great price Have not been able to go over all the features but it's nice to have a quality product. June 23, 2012
Nikon D51000 Nikon D5100 is all I expected to be, GREAT Camera!!! June 23, 2012
Excellent camera Many, many good things to say about this camera, so many I won't even bother listing any. Blows Canon away in sensor quality, and Nikon's glass wins as well. My only real complaint is that the user interface for adjusting settings needs refinement to make it more intuitive. June 22, 2012
High Praise! I turned the Mode off Auto - No need to! Fantastic camera for the money! June 22, 2012
You do not need to be a photographer to use this camera. I have owned a few cameras, and Nikkon is #1. This camera does all the work for you. I have not missed a precious moment with my first grandchild. Not one blurry picture. The photos all look so real. I can make portraits and frame them in a way that you would think I was the artist. Best investment I ever made. The lens collection for this model is phenomenal. Thanks Nikkon Love photography at this price. Diana June 22, 2012
Awesome!! This camera does awesome! I recently took some pictures late at night and the lighting is great! June 22, 2012
High qulity product, great deal! I have used the 5100 for almost a year now and couldn't be happier with it. I shoot lots of nature shots, especially macros and the camera has performed flawlessly. As a serious amateur on a limited budget, I have always wanted a Nikon and now I have a good one. The viewfinder is informative, the autofocuis is precise, and the menus are clear enough for even me to understand and use. Although I haven't used the video capability often, I was surprised how crisp it was. The camera is so packed with capability, I find myself shooting much more than I used to before I purchased the 5100. I totally recommend this camera to anyone who is serious about photography! June 21, 2012
Great for my budget especially for Entry Level Photographers I just bought my D5100 last May 2012 and it's also my first DSLR camera. I love the flip screen + live mode when capturing at at low angles. Moreover, I like the preset configurations for fast capturing of photos. The specifications are wonderful! Highly Recommended! June 20, 2012
First Digital for me It is first digital camera for me. I was (and still am) shooting 35mm with my Yashica and love it but I have to say....this is awesome ! I am going to a car show tonight and will take some pictures there. I have not used it enough yet but I can tell it will be very cool. June 20, 2012
Incredible Wow. This camera is amazing. I love it, I take it with my 55mm-300mm lens to soccer matches, swim meets, parties and events. The camera is perfect for vacations and so much more. Its easy to use, I purchased it from Costco in March and it came with so many great things for my camera. I love it and HIGHLY recomend it. There are great features and effects, my favorite is Fisheye. It is the best camera out there for the price. I love it. June 20, 2012
Wow, it is so powerful I'm having a great time using this camera for basic photos while I'm learning more and more of the advanced stuff. It looks like this camera will be capable of way more than I could ever explore. June 20, 2012
Love this camera this is a good camera to begin photograph career with, easy to learn and light weight. June 19, 2012
D5100, first DSLR This review is for you who is going to buy your first DSLR. This is my first DSLR (or SLR), converting from automatic camera. Here is the factors that worry me when I bought this camera: 1. Price: What a different in the picture taken. It is worth the money even though the price is about 4 times that I usually pay for regular automatic camera (bought with 55/300 and 18/105mm lens) 2. Difficulty: This is easier to use then my automatic camera. I start just put on Auto which function the same as automatic camera. In addition, with the tele lens you can zoom from a long distance. 3. Result: As mention below, the Picture is worth the price. I wish I had bough this years ago. Now, if Nikon can make this camera waterproof so I can carry this while I am swimming as in my waterproof automatic camera, this would be perfect. June 19, 2012
Beautiful Images I am not new to photography. Previously I have owned several SLR film cameras. This is my first serious DSLR camera. I have owned many point and shoot compact digital cameras. I love this camera. The images that it produces are beautiful. I am an artist and I needed a camera to assist in my work. The camera has numerous functions but is not difficult to master. I have a good understanding of the camera functions already. I havent used the video function as yet, but if the video is comparable to the picture quality, I will be very happy (although I didn't purchase the camera for the video useage). I would recommend this camera to anyone looking for high quality images. June 18, 2012
Beginning with Nikon a Great little Camera I am a beginning photographer but I am very pleased with the ease of use and the quality of pictures. If I don't like what I see it take two pushes of a button and it is gone. I like being able to take multiple shots because I have a nack of pushing the shutter just as my subjects move or talk. I love the option of keeping the moving subject in the frame with a current focus so the pictures are not blurry unless I want them to be. It is a great little camera just right to take shots of family members and friends. June 18, 2012
Just Superb....!!! Got the best package what I need perfectly... Happy Now :) June 17, 2012
Great Feature Set: Met My Shooting Needs D5100 is a tremendous upgrade to my D40 that I've used since 2007. I loved my D40 but a large portion of my shooting is gymnastics and basketball, both "low light" sports. I desperately craved better high ISO image quality. Would have loved the D7000 but only had the budget for D5100. With the sale price in April, I pulled the trigger on the D5100 Been more than pleased with my choice. Coming from a D40 with 2.5 fps, the 4 fps of the 5100 seems awesome and I'm more of "timing" guy than a "spray and pray" guy. In short, I've captured gymnastic shots I never would have captured with the D40. The IQ at ISO 2500 or 3200 is still better than the the D40 at 1600. It's obviously no slouch at low ISO. I've caught some baseball pics in bright light that I can crop in tight for amazing close-ups without any noticeable loss in quality. Some "commercial" reviews slam the position of the Info <I> button but I find it easier to adjust settings with this than the D40. Two quick hits with the thumb and I'm editing settings, all with one hand. Also, the "My Menu" feature is great for settings not present on the info screen. Setting the FN button to ISO allows me to easily adjust exposure in manual mode under changing light conditions. Still working through all the features. Love the Active D-lighting for daytime baseball shots; the RGB histogram is a big benefit as well. I can put the money I saved over the D7000 towards other gear (speed light, another lens) and never miss the extra features of the D7000. Very happy. Looking forward to using it for some landscape shots, portraits, and for the next basketball season. June 16, 2012
Wonderful entry level camera! The Nikon D5100 gives a lot in an affordable and easy to use package. The features of this camera are right in the middle between entry level and professional. I have used this camera for about week and it has been great! I am a web developer and the Nikon D5100 gives me the flexibility to high quality videos for clients as well as photography. I also use it to do HD videos for web tutorials. Overall, I would highly recommend this camera for any one who wants flexibility and great quality at a wonderful price!. June 16, 2012
Fantastic. My girlfriend and I bought one together more than a year ago and still take it everywhere and can't stop seeing what cool new thing our camera can do. It seems like we learn something new about it every week. June 16, 2012

Answer:
I just went thru this eval for my purpose and scoured the Internet for comparison info. I would boil it down to these high level points: The D5100 has slightly better image quality and low light performance. The T3i has a bit better user interface (easier to get at common functions) and more control over video shooting. There are other differences, but these were the most significant ones in my opinion. There both great cameras.

What I find to be the biggest edge is how low the hi ISO noise is, + you have twice as much ISO capability (25,600 instead of 12,800).

Answer:
Go into the cloud, the Internet, find and read the comparisons of the two cameras by camera experts. You will find that each has certain outstanding features that are different. Then go to the product reviews by users at the two companies' web pages and read the experiences people have had with their purchases, especially with the lenses that come with the camera.

Answer:
While Nikon does not issue a firmware to provide this and raise the D5100 shoulder to shoulder to its competitors, during video mode you can only adjust exposure compensation in A and S modes.

My friend is considering the D5100 and I was under the impression that any G type lens would work, but not all G lenses are AF-S and not all AF-S lenses are G type. The Nikon spec page for the D5100 has been changed sometime in the past month or two to say just AF-S. I recall it saying any AF-S, G, or AF-I lens was ok? I know a popular review out there that claims it HAS to be a G lens, but I don't believe this would be true....

Answer:
If anyone else is following this, I have gotten the correct answer.

The D5100 CAN auto focus with both AF-S lenses AND AF-I lenses.
It will auto focus with an AF-S lens that is not a G lens.
It will not auto focus with a G lens that is not also AF-S, despite what a popular review reports.
Therefore, there is no NIkon fisheye that will auto focus with the D5100.

Answer:
I believe the first answer is incorrect. I am pretty sure that the D5100 will auto focus just fine with AF-I, so the lens does not have to be an AF-S. Now I don't know why anyone would buy a D5100 that has an AF-I lens around, but that is not really the point. I also know this area on the NIkon spec page for the D5100 has been changed recently. So if we forget about the AF-I issue for now, will the D5100 auto focus with an AF-S lens that is not a G type? My guess is yes. And will the D5100 auto focus with a G type lens that is not AF-S like one of the major reviews suggests? My guess is no, and if that correct--then there is not a Nikon fisheye lens that will auto focus with the D5100.

Answer:
I was reading an article that said one cause of pixelated photos is an ISO setting that is too high. Check your ISO setting and play around with it. I can usually shoot good clear pictures with my ISO around 400-600 in low light. This will require a slower shutter speed or larger apeture. But I would definately play around with the ISO.

Because you have to set everything on manual. What do you mean by quality? You should try and shoot RAW or at least Jpeg fine. Read up on Aperture, Shutter speed, Iso, And white balance to get your feet wet

Hi, I'm new to DSLRs.

How does the D5100's HDR mode work? I see it under "Menu -> Shooting Menu -> HDR" but it's always disabled no matter what settings I seem to configure on the D5100. What presets must I use to enable HDR?

I realize HDR through software is going to be better than the D5100's auto-HDR, nevertheless I just want to see how the D5100's HDR is.

Thanks!

Answer:
I use the 18-200mm. I like it, but it does not have a Macro setting. If I had known that, I would have looked for a different lens.

Answer:
Technically they are the same as in I doubt very much whether you would notice a difference in iq between them, the only thing that will mater to some is that the AF-s version will auto focus on the D5100.

Answer:
Though you could probably purchase a generic plastic LCD film protector (Like a flexible version of what you would use on the iphone or ipod). Just goes on like a sticker. Doesn't protect from breakage, but scratches are handled well.
