HDR (High Dynamic Range)

Exquisite detail in highlight and shadow

In scenes with extreme contrasts, such as bright, sunlit clouds and a foreground deep in shadow, it was once quite difficult to render the textures of both equally. Not any more. D5100 combines two exposures to create an image revealing an extremely wide dynamic range, but with less noise and richer color gradation than ever before.
Capture every detail with remarkable clarity—the D5100 brings image quality in a class of its own.

Stunning image quality

Image quality in a class of its own

Incorporating the latest Nikon D-SLR technologies such as the 16.2MP DX-format CMOS sensor and EXPEED 2 image processing engine, the D5100 delivers outstanding image quality. Its CMOS sensor offers a remarkably wide ISO range (ISO 100 to 6400) with reduced noise which enables you to shoot at faster shutter speeds and capture scenes and subjects with less blur. Handheld shooting and full HD movies come out looking great even in low light.

D5100 Bought this camera in the states before Christmas just before returning home to our overseas location in Italy. Was very excited about using this camera to take family pictures. Had issues with the camera from the moment I opened it out of the box. Camera would turn on and then turn off unexpectedly after only a few minutes of being on. Also, After turning on the camera, would get a shutter error message that would not go away. Camera would not shoot in the continous release mode. Very frustrating as I am overseas now and do not have a good camera to take shots of our family and not willing to spend more money while we wait for this problem to be fixed. I talked to a customer service rep over the phone. I explained the problem and she stated I would need to send the camera to the facility in the states. The nikon service facility received the camera on 3 Jan. I am still waiting for them to fix it and send the camera to me in Italy. January 24, 2012
Firmware Update Problem I purchased the D5100 a few days ago and having issues already. The problem is with the SD card. The scenario goes as such: I take a few pictures, then cannot take anymore due to the error message "No memory card" or "No SD card." So I have to remove the SD card and place it back into the camera. The camera reads that there is a SD card back in. I can take 1 to a few pictures before the error comes up again. Vicious cycle. I took the camera back to the store I purchased it from and had two associates try their best at getting the firmware update completed. However, the camera did not respond to the SD card with the 1.01 firmware on it. The camera wouldn't recognize any update on the SD card existed. Instructions for the firmware update were followed carefully from the Nikon website. I do not know how often Nikon has this problem. I will try a different SD card. If this error still is not resolved, I will return the camera altogether. Let me add that when I could take the few pictures, they were of nice quality. Thank you. December 3, 2011
Has been in for service twice in 5 months I bought this camera with great confidence and joy. I had saved up for a long time and was very excited. For the first two months it worked great and took beautiful photos. I was excited to learn more of its capabilities. Then it stopped working, only two months after it arrived. I sent it back and the shutter was repaired under warranty. I hoped it was an aberration. I took some photos with the repaired camera and all seemed well -- until it happened again three weeks later. I have just returned it to Nikon Service for the second time. I hope that they will either replace it or refund my money. A brand-new camera, carefully handled, should not have these kinds of problems! November 15, 2011
Poor SD card compatability and customer service Excellent camera...when it worked, which was about 60% of the time. Kept getting an error message of "No SD Card Inserted". I was using a SanDisk Extreme Pro 8GB SDHC memory card, which was an approved brand and size according to the owner's manual. After exchanging the card once and the camera once I contacted customer support via the Nikon website and was informed the SanDisk Extreme Pro cards were not compatible with any Nikon cameras. Once again, I took the camera and card back to the retailer. At the store we called Nikon Customer support to ask about compatibility with a SanDisk Ultra 16GB card and was assured it was OK. I took two pictures with the Ultra card and got the same error message. That was the last straw...the camera has been returned. November 9, 2011
Stove Up within 60 Days or Less -My D5100 worked less than 60 days. -3 days into a 10 day vacation it began producing black images (yes lens cap was off). It continued to do so after changing lenses and many attempts of self troubleshooting . -Currently less than pleased with this product and would not recommend it. -Very disappointed. -Prior to this major malfunction the camera appears to capture images that are of the highest quality. **Review subject to change after Nikon has repaired/replaced it. Fuzzy Pictures Do not buy this camera. The lens do not produce sharp images. September 13, 2011
Failed day one of vacation I splurged and paid for a reputable camera for an Alaska Cruise I was preparing for. I used it for 2 weeks and it took some great pictures during the experiment period. I took some photos while boarding the ship and then it failed shortly after leaving the pier. I really wanted it for my excursion adventures and was thwarted. The camera took black photo scenes in all modes. When I called the tech support, they told me I needed to send it in for repairs after 2 weeks of use. They suspected the image sensor failed. Nikon has a policy they are not liable for missed photo ops. September 2, 2011
Totally unacceptable. Dead pixels - 3 cameras. It'd be such a fantastic camera except for the dead pixels. 3 different units, all three with dead pixes. The funny part (if you can call any of this "funny") is that with the first one, the dead pixels were red. The second one, blue. This third one, green. Some say this is "normal" -- Well, this is the first digital camera I've ever had (and I've had plenty) where dead pixels were considered "normal" -- Three strikes and this one's gone. It doesn't work as I expected. I thought the image quality would be much better, and now through my viewfinder everything comes out blurry. I'm thinking of selling it and buying a camera. Worst waste of $1,000 in my life. Big disappointment. June 9, 2011
No manual mode for video Returning camera. Extremely disappointed that Nikon doesn't believe that manual exposure control is needed for video. April 30, 2011
pui what's wrong of this product, i can't use my old lens on it~ is's difficult to put a focus motor inside??? April 5, 2011
WARNING - Read before you buy! I have had my Nikon D5100 for 3 years. I paid $1200 including extra lenses. My camera has broken (all pictures come out black/shutter issue) twice in the 3 years. I got an exchange for the first one, and now they are repairing the second one. It is costing me $160 because it's now out of warranty. If you want to pay $160 (when it invariably goes black again) to keep the camera working, then go ahead and buy one. If I had it to do all over again, I would buy a Cannon. Sorry, Nikon. You let me down. January 17, 2014
