The D5100 incorporates an amazing array of special effects for use when taking still pictures or recording D-Movie Full HD movies. Selective Color isolates any color within the scene; capture details in places too dark for your own eyes using Night Vision; create bright, glowing images filled with atmosphere with High Key; emphasize the mood of a scene using Low Key; Miniature Effect makes a scene look like a miniature scale model; and Color Sketch creates color outlines of the subject that are played back as a series of stills in a slide show.
Isolate the vibrant shades of blue in your subject's dress with the D5100's Selective Color effect.

Tell better stories

Full HD 1080p D-Movie with Sound

The D5100 delivers exceptionally high-quality movie performance due to its full HD capability while the latest in Full-time autofocus takes the guess work out of tracking your subjects while in motion. Effortless moviemaking is at your fingertip thanks to D5100's ergonomically placed Live View and Movie start button. Your D-Movies will come to life thanks to D5100's sound recording capability - get stereo sound with Nikon's optional ME-1 Stereo Microphone.
Create stunning multi-exposure images with the D5100's built-in HDR (High Dynamic Range) capability.

HDR (High Dynamic Range)

Exquisite detail in highlight and shadow

In scenes with extreme contrasts, such as bright, sunlit clouds and a foreground deep in shadow, it was once quite difficult to render the textures of both equally. Not any more. D5100 combines two exposures to create an image revealing an extremely wide dynamic range, but with less noise and richer color gradation than ever before.
Capture every detail with remarkable clarity—the D5100 brings image quality in a class of its own.

Stunning image quality

Image quality in a class of its own

Incorporating the latest Nikon D-SLR technologies such as the 16.2MP DX-format CMOS sensor and EXPEED 2 image processing engine, the D5100 delivers outstanding image quality. Its CMOS sensor offers a remarkably wide ISO range (ISO 100 to 6400) with reduced noise which enables you to shoot at faster shutter speeds and capture scenes and subjects with less blur. Handheld shooting and full HD movies come out looking great even in low light.

Speed and performance that delivers

With high-speed continuous shooting at approx. 4 frames per second, you'll never miss a moment and with D5100's large optical viewfinder providing accurate and realistic composition, you'll get a precise view and focus in every situation.

Capture your subjects precisely

D5100's 11-point AF system provides flexibility to compose the shot you want ensuring your subject is captured sharply wherever it's located in the frame. Good Performance for a Good Price It is my first DSLR and I am amazed with it, because it has all the necessary elements that you need when you are interested in learning photography. it has an incredible image quality and color reproduction that I never got from a digital camera and also a good performance in low light conditions. No one of my photos has been modified with special Software, I only convert them from RAW to JPEG, and they were taken using M,P and S modes only. October 4, 2014
it gives all benefits in one.Nice to use it. First of all i would like to say that its looks very gorgeous. So much comfortable to handle. Its picture quality is superb.I think it is all in one. August 11, 2014
Amazing Camera!! The d5100 has allowed me to take the next step in photography. I love using it and can't wait to build my knowledge of photography by continuing to use it. May 31, 2014
Great First DSLR I printed out the complete manual that came on the CD, learned where all of the controls were and took a digital photography class which has got me really comfortable with this camera. I highly recommend that all folks like myself that are new to DSLR cameras and the functions should do this. I know that I am getting so much more out of the creative control functions because I did. I hardly use the auto setting any more. Now it is easy to use, and takes great pictures. I do wish it had a dedicated ISO button. I have assigned the FN button to control the ISO. The kit lens that came with the camera seems to be doing a good job. I bought the 55-200 lens refurbished from the Nikon website. That also works great. I use both lenses regularly. I am so very happy with this camera and the lenses. May 28, 2014
Nice for the price Very good images. Easy to use. Easy to access most shooting modes from the back panel. The swivel screen is a must have for self portraits and video. Wish it had 5 exposure bracketing instead of 3 brackets. I really like its small size and light weight. My particular camera has picture control settings that I have to custom set to get decent results. For what you can get this camera for now as a refurbished model $350 currently on Nikon Store..... its a deal that can not be beat anywhere in photographic bang for the buck. Rock on my brothers... if your looking for a rock solid DSLR on a budget look no further. May 16, 2014

Answer:
The D5100 doesn't need Capture NX 2 in order to clean the sensor. Maybe you are refering to the Image Dust Off Ref Photo (please see page # 172 of the user's manual for the D5100).

On other Nikon DSLRs there is a quick formatting option (e.g., the "trash" and "mode" buttons on the D300). Does the D5100 have such an option or can formatting only be done via menu options?

Hi OldPro. I just got my D5100 and like my previous DSLR, a different brand you have to access it from the menu. It's under tools, the wrench symbol and is the first thing listed in that menu screen.

no, you'd need a d3100/d5100 at least. (but believe me, AF in video even in a d7k is spotty at best, and very slow... it's not worth it.)

In the D7000, in live view, i can adjust shutter, ISO and aperture and live view will reflect those changes. This is an easy way to see what your picture will look like. On the D5100, it appears to adjust automatically to changes of light and is not reflective of what your still will look like. How do we shut this auto adjust off? Live view is pointless with auto adjust.

I bought this camera brand new 3 months ago. Worked great. Left it alone for a few weeks. Picked it up to use again and the auto focus does not work. Went to a camera shop they tested other lenses with it, same deal. They said it's the body not the lens problem. It manual focuses just fine, just a pain in a butt at times. I'm told it takes a month to get it sent in to be fixed. I need it next week working. It was suggested to me that there might be a software problem and there might be an update for that. Anyone know anything about this? Any helpful hints?

Thanks!

Set lens aparture for the highest number possible. Set shutter as slow as possible (at least 1/20 sec, slower if possible.

Use a neutral density filter to help reduce the amount of light hitting the sensor (and thus allowing you to slow the shutter speed even more).

Try to shoot early or late in the day and avoid direct sunlight if possible.

A tripod is a must.

Hi, i want to know how to set up auto bracketing mode in my nikon d5100, when i enable brk mode, it suposses to shot 3 photos when i push the shot button, but instead it only takes 1 photo at a time, and need to shot each one by one.

I saw a video of nikon d5100 taking the 3 photos in one shot. How can i set up the camera to do this?

I would like to know if there is a D5100 like first generation or a latest generation by reading the UPC number such as; 018208254767, 018208919758, having a newer hardware or Firmware installed, etc.
Or, are the models MPN 25476 and the UPC 018208254767, 018208919758
numbers for all D5100 the same ? Thanks

Answer:
The D5100 will have the same specifications regardless of the UPC code. Firmware is a read only set of instructions that are embedded in a hardware device to either add or improve function, which is not always needed.

Answer:
Nikon offers two types of autofocus digital camera bodies: those with a built-in focus drive motor and those which require a lens to have a motor. Cameras such as the D5100 do not have a focus motor in it so they require the lens to have the focusing motor – an “AF-S” lens. While these bodies can use a lens with no focus motor (an “AF” lens) you would have to manually turn the focus ring to bring the subject in to sharp focus.

Answer:
Press the button above the "zoom-out" button (with the question mark right above it).
It has a plus sign inside a magnifying glass.
I don't know about percents, but you can zoom in a lot on the pics you already took.
