Nikon D3100 I purchased the D3100 as a 'light weight' alternative the the D3 I normally use , as I planned for a 10-day backpacking trip to Philmont last July. The D3100 camera preformed flawlessly the entire trip. I had no issues with battery power management even though I purchased two additional batteries. Nor any issues with dust gathering on the sensor since the camera had a sensor cleaning function built into the camera. The simple UI controls for adjusting the flash, made the pop-up flash perfect for adding fill light for those difficult lighting situations. My only regret was that I didn't bring 2-D3100 cameras as it was frequently out of my hands being used by all the boys on the trek. JHM April 1, 2012
Finally got my 1st DSLR! my D3100 arrived this afternoon and I came home to get familiar with the settings and give a tryout. Let me tell you that my desires to ever go back to the days of my 35 film is long past now. Light weight, quick to snap and use as easy as my point and shoot Coolpix. If you have the desire to get into a digital SLR then I am going to highly recommend this for what ever you have a need for, the photos I will attach are my first with this, I'm very impressed and want to learn more. Thanks Nikon October 22, 2010
Awesome Camera.. Got this for Christmas 2011...love it...still learning what all it can do...have three grandchildren..so need I say more...would totally recommend this camera... July 15, 2012
Excellent camera for probably twice the price! Fantastic camera, I have owned this camera now for over one year. I have learned so much from this camera and it has given me some super quility pictures. It is worth every penny. Here are some samples. July 14, 2012

Memory card access lamp doesn´t stop blinking - D3100

This problem occurs only with the 18-55 lens at my D-3100. I´ve tried changing the memory card for another from a different brand and changing the lens for another of the same model (18-55), both working properly on other camera D-5000. But the problem persists even if I switch off the camera. Turning off the AF and VR on the lens then the access lamp stops blinking. What could be the problem? I´ve just reinstalled the firmware but anything changes.

I just bought the nikon 3100 and I plan to take the class. But, I have an event on Friday...it's a doggie fashion show in a hotel ballroom. The lighting will probably be bad. Any recommendations for appropriate sesttings, or should I just go with "auto"? Thanks!

Have used the n50 for years like it a lot lot. No I am not giving it up as long as i can get my pictures developed. Time to upgrade into the 21st century though it be with kicking and screaming. Don't want to get the two bodies mixed up while dashing out of the house at 5am. Hate to have to walk around with a red bow on my camera all day.

Hi. I am looking to purchase a new lens for my D3100. I already have the 18-55mm and 55-200mm. I have been looking at the 50mm F1.8, then learned that this lens won't allow me to autofocus on the D3100. In other words, I would have to focus manually.

My question is: Are there similar lens available in the market that would allow the D3100 to do autofocus?

I would mainly use the new lens to take full body pictures. I feel that the body figures look too small when I use 18-55mm lens.

I am also considering purchasing the 18-300 lens. If you are interested in purchasing the 18-55 and/or 55-200mm lens, please let me know. I'm willing to sell the camera, too. I would just get a new package.

I welcome your suggestions. Thank you for reading.

Answer:
If you are trying to capture raindrops in flight, the easiest way is to use flash and a macro lens like the 105 or 200. You also need a hood over your camera and flash so that they won't get wet. You have to be outside so that the flash is not reflected off of a window.

Set up the camera where it will stay dry, but as close to the rain as possible (but not so close that the lens will shield the drops from the flash). Make sure any background is far enough away so that the flash will have little impact on it. Set the camera to manual mode and flash. Set the aperture to f16 in order to get a large depth of field. Set the shutter speed to the maximum sync speed of 1/200 sec. Set the focus to manual and focus at the proper distance for the rain.

Start taking pictures. During daytime you may need to use a second flash (triggered by the first) and set the aperture as high is it will go...the idea is to brighten the flash and darken the background to make the raindrops stand out.

Once you start getting images you can adjust the aperture and shutter speed to your taste. You may also have to dial in some exposure compensation or use a second flash manually to keep from over exposing the drops... it depends on how hard it is raining and how much flash is bouincing back.

Think about the size of the raindrops. Unless you have a long lens and focus as close as possible, the raindrops in your image will be very small. A set of close up lenses (they screw on the end like a filter) may help, but depth of field could become so shallow that it is difficult to catch a raindrop at the right distance for a tight focus.

This is a challenging task, but sounds klike a great project and lots of fun.
Enjoy!

Cameras such as the D3100 do not have a focus motor in it. In this case the lens does. Please verify that the lens has the switch mode set to A and try another lens to determine if it’s the lens that is not Auto focusing.

I am currently using the Nikon D50, and have been for several years. Recently I was gifted the Sigma DG 70-300mm lens and haven't been able to find any information regarding it's compatibility with the D3100. Does anyone know if I would be able to use it on this camera? Until I figure this out I will be holding off on buying anything.

If I have taken a photo with long shutter release, but I already know that it won't come out as intended for some reason. Is there a way to cancel the photo processing and shoot the next picture? (like turning the camera off while it's processing)
Or does it damage the system and is not recommended?

Thanks in advance.

Answer:
You would have to get a FX camera to get the same size image as 35mm film. The AI, AI-S will work but only in Aperture Priority or Manual. D700 is selling for about $2200, body only.

Answer:
As long as your buying the kit, it will have a 18-55mm AF-S autofocus lens, set it on auto, zoom in or out and depress the shutter once half way to focus and then all the way to shoot.
