Debunking all myths I recieved my D800E in time for a two-week photo trek through Peru. It was intended to be used as a back-up to my D4, but it quickly became the go-to camera for portraits and lanscape shots. The camera perfomed wonderfully under all types of conditions. Unlike all the reviews I had read, this camera can indeed be: Hand-held at slow speeds instead of only being tripod mounted. Used at high ISO speeds with incredible detail. Used for shots involving a lot of textile and colors. If moire is an issue, stop down the lens a bit more and eliminate any concerns. The lenses most often used on this camera were the 50mm f/1.4 and the 16mm - 35mm zoom. I am attaching some photos and 100% crops to show detail. All are hand-held, speeds up to 1/90th and ISO between 200 and 800. May 7, 2012
Great Results Incredible quality but with a few quirks. Going from still to video and back again is not as transparent as it could be and some of my 32GB cards don't work. But boy are the results great! July 15, 2012
Exceeds All Expectations! This is my 4th Nikon SLR, and so it was with a bit of reluctance that I purchased the d800 - thinking I would use it occasionally for landscapes and portrait work when I felt I needed the extra pixel count, but continue to use my other Nikons for everything else. Silly girl - what was I thinking? This camera exceeds all my expectations! It takes dazzling photos. The other reviewers have done an excellent job of citing the technical merits of this camera, as well as pointing out some of the drawbacks, so I won't repeat all of that. I will say that I think the price is fair for the quality and capabilities of this camera. I've heard some pros telling beginners that it doesn't matter what camera you shoot with - you need to learn the fundamentals of photography first. I agree. But I also want to encourage every photographer, no matter what your skill or experience level, to aim for the very best equipment you can afford. While a good camera can't "make" you a better photographer, it can certainly elevate your shots to their highest levels. I sincerely believe that no matter your skill level, from beginner to pro - this camera will make all your shots sing. If you're going to spend your time and talents on photography - at any level, this camera will give you the opportunity to take your very best shots. July 7, 2012
The game changing camera.... I've had the D800 for only 2 months, a short time for a rigorous evaluation but I mind was made up within seconds of downloading the first images. A lot was predicted, argued about, panned, glorified and just discussed for a long time before it because available. The predictions, for the most part were wrong. It is not a studio or tripod only super critical overly demanding camera at all. There are no downsides in having the best sensor in the industry with 36mpx. It was a very pleasant surprise that all my lenses just worked better from top pro glass to DX kit lens, all of them performed better than on anything else. Although most talk has been about the incredible detail never seen before in a DSLR before, and rightly but the revelation was discovering the complete harmony with which all the image related subsystems worked together: metering, Auto White Balance, Active D-Lighting, Auto Focus, color, 14 stops of DR etc. With little adjustment to my shooting technique my keeper rate has risen dramatically, it is hard to take a port shot that is not very well exposed, blown highlights or lost shadows. It handles mixed lighting with AWB better than any camera I have ever used including all other Nikon pro camera and Canon. After using it for a few days the most difficult aspect of the using the camera was keeping the ear to ear grin off my face. I had gotten used to taking safety shots with prior cameras, particularly if conditions were poor and doing a lot of between shot reviews so an event might need 1,200 shots in an evening or 300 on a landscape outing. No more, after a few days and my first event, I noticed i shot a fraction of frames and stopped using the rear review display. I just knew, if my composition was good, the shot was good, every time. What a confidence builder to know that critical shots will come out right the first time, with great post processing flexibility and clean detail filled shadows. I have full confidence that the D800 is the easiest to use high performance camera available, and the best image taking device I have ever seen or used. Yes, this camera is that good! July 5, 2012
SUPERGREATFANTASTIC simply an amazing camera, finally a 35mm digital slr that will impress you. Ive always been a nikon photographer, but when nikon and canon made the transition from film to digital I switched to canon, especially due to the support canon offered at almost every professional studio worldwide, the 5d Mk 2 was/is an incrediable camera, but NIkon has set the bar now with the d800. canon is out nikon is in. the timelapse option and raw processing built into the Nikon Camera menu is actually a very useful tool. Other than the very slight image quality differences, the D800 and D800E perform exactly the same. Focus speed, exposure metering, shooting speed, movie recording, accessory compatibility, control location and function, and all other aspects are identical.

There are many suggestions being made that say the D800 HDMI output is a PLAYBACK QUALITY output, and not a RECORDING SIGNAL output that will provide for a superior (uncompressed) means of acquisition. Nikon, could you please describe the nature of the HDMI output in the D800. Does it provide a "recording quality" output for superior (uncompressed) data acquisition?

Thank you for answering my previous HDMI queries.

Answer:
Update: here is where the confusion seems to lie, regarding HDMI quality:
the "1080i only" HDMI output refers to live view/monitoring (page 270), and the Movie settings (page 70) determine HDMI output to recording device. So if one chooses "1920X1080;24fps" in the movie settings, then that is what is being fed through the HDMI, bypassing in camera compression. Correct me if I'm wrong.

I have made a test image with my new out-of-box D800 and want to compare same image made with D700, but PS in CS5 will not open the NEF RAW image. When I try to open the image, a message says, "the file appears to be from a camera model which is not supported by the installed version of Camera Raw."

I have installed the ViewNX2 software, but don't know if I missed a step somewhere.

Answer:
The right selection for a lens will depend a lot on the type of photography that you are interesting. Some photographers look for faster lenses (large aperture ex. f/2.8), wide angle, Telephoto, Macro or zoom lenses.
Please visit our website and use the lens finder tool in order for you to make your selection base on your needs.

Dear Nikon,

I am enjoying the new D800! However, I am hugely disappointed that it is not compatible with the WT-5. The WT-4 only supports 802.11 a/b/g (lacking n) and is not compatible with the iPad/iPhone control.

Why did Nikon choose to forego the WT-5 compatibility? This should be a standard feature on pro cameras. At minimum, could we please soon have an updated WT-4 with 802.11 n and iPad/iPhone control support?

I see that in Full FX resolution, this will shoot up to 4 FPS and in DX mode, it will shoot up to 5 FPS according to the product information guide. Why is this so much slower than cheaper cameras (like the D7000, which will shoot up to 6 frames per second at full resolution)? Will this camera truly only shoot up to 5 FPS at minimum resolutions in DX format, or will it shoot faster that 4-5 FPS at lower resolutions of FX and DX formatted pictures?

Answer:
In the Retouch menu in the D800 you have the Distortion Control option: Will Create copies with reduced peripheral distortion. Select Auto to let the camera correct distortion automatically and then
make fine adjustments using the multi selector, or select Manual to reduce distortion manually (note that Auto is not available with photos taken using auto distortion control). Press > to reduce barrel distortion, < to reduce pincushion distortion (the effect can be previewed in the edit
display; note that greater amounts of distortion control result in more of the edges being cropped out). Press OK to copy the photograph, or press > to exit to playback without creating a copy. Note that distortion control may heavily crop or distort the edges of copies created from photographs taken with DX lenses at image areas other than DX (24×16) 1.5×

Does the D800 read the aperature off of the AI lens aperature ring? Or, do I have to program the aperature settings like on the D7000? Thank you.

Answer:
Lens compatibility is listed in each of the cameras instruction manuals. You may want to visit www.aiconversions.com, it has information on lens compatibility and also is a referral of an individual who modifies older lenses to have it work more current cameras. Please note that he does not work for Nikon and we do not guarantee his work.

There have been several reports of AF issues on the left side of the bank only on the D800, can you confirm what the issue is, how it's been addressed and what we need to do/check if we fall into this batch or have this issue?? Does this also affect the D800E?

For the D800,
I copied this from specs "Non-CPU: Usable in [A] or [M] mode Center-Weighted or Spot Metering; Electronic Rangefinder can be used if Maximum Aperture is f/5.6 or Faster "

What does it mean?

Answer:
Most modern Nikkor lenses include an internal computer module (CPU) that communicates with the camera to provide information such as focal length, focus position etc. When such lenses are used, the camera gets the information it needs to permit use of all exposure modes: (P) program, (S) shutter priority, (A) aperture priority, and (M) manual exposure control.

Older and some special lenses do not include the computer. These are “non-CPU” lenses. With these lenses, the camera can only function correctly in the (A) aperture priority and (M) manual modes. According to the specification you quote, this only works with the Spot Metering and Center-Weighted exposure metering modes. Some of the more complex “matrix metering” modes require a CPU lens.

Many Nikon cameras include a focus assist feature that uses the focusing sensor(s) to produce a visual indication in the viewfinder. This helps when manually focusing the lens. According to the quoted specification, the lens has to have an aperture of f/5.6 or larger (faster) in order for this feature to work correctly with the D800.

There are some exceptions for special lenses, for instance certain PC Nikkor lenses. A complete listing of lenses with their capabilities and compatibilities can be found on pages 371 to 374 of the “D800 User’s Manual.” The manual can be downloaded from the “support” section of this web site.
