Debunking all myths
I recieved my D800E in time for a two-week photo trek through Peru. It was intended to be used as a back-up to my D4, but it quickly became the go-to camera for portraits and lanscape shots.
The camera perfomed wonderfully under all types of conditions.
Unlike all the reviews I had read, this camera can indeed be:
Hand-held at slow speeds instead of only being tripod mounted.
Used at high ISO speeds with incredible detail.
Used for shots involving a lot of textile and colors. If moire is an issue, stop down the lens a bit more and eliminate any concerns.
The lenses most often used on this camera were the 50mm f/1.4 and the 16mm - 35mm zoom.
I am attaching some photos and 100% crops to show detail. All are hand-held, speeds up to 1/90th and ISO between 200 and 800.

Great Results
Incredible quality but with a few quirks. Going from still to video and back again is not as transparent as it could be and some of my 32GB cards don't work. But boy are the results great!

Exceeds All Expectations!
This is my 4th Nikon SLR, and so it was with a bit of reluctance that I purchased the d800 - thinking I would use it occasionally for landscapes and portrait work when I felt I needed the extra pixel count, but continue to use my other Nikons for everything else. Silly girl - what was I thinking? This camera exceeds all my expectations! It takes dazzling photos.
The other reviewers have done an excellent job of citing the technical merits of this camera, as well as pointing out some of the drawbacks, so I won't repeat all of that. I will say that I think the price is fair for the quality and capabilities of this camera.
I've heard some pros telling beginners that it doesn't matter what camera you shoot with - you need to learn the fundamentals of photography first. I agree. But I also want to encourage every photographer, no matter what your skill or experience level, to aim for the very best equipment you can afford. While a good camera can't "make" you a better photographer, it can certainly elevate your shots to their highest levels.
I sincerely believe that no matter your skill level, from beginner to pro - this camera will make all your shots sing. If you're going to spend your time and talents on photography - at any level, this camera will give you the opportunity to take your very best shots.

The game changing camera....
I've had the D800 for only 2 months, a short time for a rigorous evaluation but I mind was made up within seconds of downloading the first images.
A lot was predicted, argued about, panned, glorified and just discussed for a long time before it because available. The predictions, for the most part were wrong. It is not a studio or tripod only super critical overly demanding camera at all. There are no downsides in having the best sensor in the industry with 36mpx.
It was a very pleasant surprise that all my lenses just worked better from top pro glass to DX kit lens, all of them performed better than on anything else.
Although most talk has been about the incredible detail never seen before in a DSLR before, and rightly but the revelation was discovering the complete harmony with which all the image related subsystems worked together: metering, Auto White Balance, Active D-Lighting, Auto Focus, color, 14 stops of DR etc.
With little adjustment to my shooting technique my keeper rate has risen dramatically, it is hard to take a port shot that is not very well exposed, blown highlights or lost shadows. It handles mixed lighting with AWB better than any camera I have ever used including all other Nikon pro camera and Canon.
After using it for a few days the most difficult aspect of the using the camera was keeping the ear to ear grin off my face.
I had gotten used to taking safety shots with prior cameras, particularly if conditions were poor and doing a lot of between shot reviews so an event might need 1,200 shots in an evening or 300 on a landscape outing. No more, after a few days and my first event, I noticed i shot a fraction of frames and stopped using the rear review display. I just knew, if my composition was good, the shot was good, every time. What a confidence builder to know that critical shots will come out right the first time, with great post processing flexibility and clean detail filled shadows.
I have full confidence that the D800 is the easiest to use high performance camera available, and the best image taking device I have ever seen or used. Yes, this camera is that good!

SUPERGREATFANTASTIC
simply an amazing camera, finally a 35mm digital slr that will impress you. Ive always been a nikon photographer, but when nikon and canon made the transition from film to digital I switched to canon, especially due to the support canon offered at almost every professional studio worldwide, the 5d Mk 2 was/is an incrediable camera, but NIkon has set the bar now with the d800. canon is out nikon is in.
the timelapse option and raw processing built into the Nikon Camera menu is actually a very useful tool.

I have had a Nikon D200 since 2006 with only two lenses, the 18-200mm kit lens, and the 105mm f/2.8 Macro. I have in the past three months, followed the advice of several camera store reps, who said to always upgrade my 'glass', before getting a better camera. I have since acquired the 14-24mm f/2.8 G, the 24-70mm f/2.8 G, and the 70-200mm f 2.8 G ED VR II, the "trinity" if you will, and also an 85mm f/1.4 G for portaits. Will replacing or augmenting the D200 with a D800 be worth the investment?

Answer:
Yes, I would definately say that it is worth the upgrade. It has a full frame 36.2mp sensor (you can also use the camera at medium 20.3mp or 9mp), where as the D200 has a DX 10mp sensor. The new lenses you have are designed to be used with an FX sensor, currently you get a 1.5x crop (You can also use the DX mode (15mp) in the D800 as well as a couple of other setting). The ISO ability is massively better than the D200, around the same level as the D700. Image quality, dynamic range and colour depth are all better. The D800 has the same 51 point AF system used in the D4. Which is extremely good. The Screen is 3.2 inches, with much better detail vis 2.5" for the D200. Also you get 100% view finder coverage in FX mode. The D800 has a video mode and is able to shoot 1080p video compressed to H.264 B Frame (You also get live view (which can be useful).
Battery life is much better, You also get sensor cleaning and also 2 memory card slots (1 CF + 1 SF).
The D200 does shoot faster in theory 5fps, to the D800 4fps, but in reality with a battery pack you can shoot 6fps in DX mode (with the MB-12 battery grip). The D200 is also lighter and smaller.
I realize Lexar's 1000x CF cards are not on Nikon's approved list for the D800, but I am wondering if these cards would work with this camera. I heard these cards were just coming out, along with the D800, so perhaps that is the reason the were not on the list.
Any clarification is appreciated...

Answer:
Lexar states the following for UDMA 7 cards in their FAQ section:"Can I use a CF 6/UDMA 7 CompactFlash memory card with older host devices?
Yes! All Lexar® CF memory cards built with CF 6/UDMA 7 technology can be used with existing CF and CF UDMA devices (backwards compatible#.
Pairing your CF 6/UDMA 7 enabled CF memory card with a CF 6/UDMA 7 enabled host device is recommended to fully take advantage of the performance benefits from your CF 6/UDMA 7 enabled memory card."
Based on Lexar's comments, since cards like their 600X types - UDMA 6 - are listed as tested in the D800, the 1000X UDMA 7 cards should therefore also work. However, if the D800 does not have the firmware to support UDMA 7, you won't get the full performance advantage compared to the slower cards. I can find nothing in the Nikon literature - either the User's Manual or the Product Brochure - to indicate if the D800 is up to UDMA 7 standards. They just say the camera is capable of using UDMA compliant cards.
Personally, I just bought the 600X cards because they are a lot cheaper right now.

Leftmost AF points are back focusing significantly on my D800. There have been several other reports on the same issue on various forums and blogs. Can you confirm what the issue is, how it's been addressed and what we need to do/check if we fall into this batch or have this issue?

First of all: I ordered a D800. So I was interested in the question what lens to buy since there is no kit lens coming with the body and I am switching from DX to FX. During my search I found out that there discussions going on in various places on the internet about the question if you can get good results with Nikkor lenses that are currently available. There are a couple of websites that tested the D800 with various lenses and there is not a single one which can give the full resolution on the D800, only a couple of lenses give decent to good resolution. Also there is a test result with the f/2,8 24-70mm which says that you loose 50% of resolution from the center towards the edges at 24mm. In that same test the micro 105mm got very good rating so I have no reason to assume that the test is biased.
At this point I would like to repeat my question: Is there a resolution problem with current lenses on the D800 which will result in pictures that aren't sharp?

Answer:
Since the D800 is a higher resolution camera than previously produced by Nikon, more care must be taken to prevent camera shake or subject movement relative to the increased resolution.Nikkor optics are still excellent and anyone stating an arbitrary % of loss in any optical factor would need to clarify their testing methods and prove their results, because this is not the case. Use a tripod, and increase your shutter speed. Obviously the higher the resolution, the greater the sensitivity to movement. If you cannot use a faster shutter speed, or a tripod, then use our Nikkor VR lenses, or the newer lenses that incorporate VR II, which offer even better stability.
Stepping up your shooting methods to adapt to higher resolution shooting is recommended. Also, movement will increase at greater focal lengths, so again, VR plays an important role if other stabilizing methods are not available.

I was out doing a shoot the other day and my D800 locked up twice on me. The first time it took about 3 minutes to clear the lockup. The second time I had to remove the battery to clear the lockup.
Looking on the Internet, I see several people reporting this problem.
I just want to make sure Nikon knows about this problem and would like to know when a solution will be avalable. My guess is this can be fixed with a firmware update.
Still love my D800!

I am wanting to take advantage of the D800's video capacity. As a 400x lexar SD card fast enough to write the incoming video to the camera buffer without stopping longer video recordings? Hope this makes sense. I am just imaging a slower card would not be able to write fast enough to the camera buffer without disrupting the video recording.

The D800 is a great camera for any type of shooting. That will depend on the lens you are using, the right selection for a lens has to do a lot with the type of photography that you are interesting.
