Excellent Camera
I photograph as a hobby and have upgraded my cameras every couple of years. I shopped and read all the reviews and chose the D5100 for price and quality. I am no expert, but with this camera I am taking amazing photographs. It is very user friendly and after watching some of the tutorial videos I feel I really know this camera. After taking some pictures of a hawk high in the tree with my 55 - 300 zoom lens, my wife said she was impressed with the quality of pictures it took. I am completely satisfied with this camera and don't think I will have to upgrade anymore. I can't recommend this camera enough.

Amazing Camera
This is my first DSLR camera from Nikon. It is an amazing camera producing some of the clearest/sharpest images I have seen. It is great for the price and has many accessories compatible with the camera that work great. It is also very easy to travel with and I have never had any problems with it. It has excellent low light settings. The only thing that disappoints me is the night time flash photos. But with the great low light settings, I hardly ever use the flash. The LCD screen is amazingly clear and the vari-angle is very helpful. This is a great buy!

A Truly Outstanding, Solid Camera
I have been shooting with the Nikon D60 for a year and a half and have been more than satisfied with the results. It originally came with the 18-55 lens and I also got a 55-200 but those were upgraded to 18-105 and 70-300 over the past year. I have now had the D5100 for four weeks, received for a milestone birthday, and I absolutely love it. For me it provided everything I needed without having to reach up to the D7000.
The image captures from the D5100 using either the 105 or the 300 are very very high quality. The D5100 has the same image sensor as the D7000, which is a nice benefit. When I go out to shoot, I shoot. It is nothing to snap two or three hundred clicks in very short order. And very few of them do I ever have to delete while still on the memory card in the camera or discard later once downloaded to my pc or laptop.
The settings and functions are easy to learn and easy to use. The additional “Scenes” and "Effects" I am still playing with but the ones I have used have delivered as Nikon promises. I still do an awful lot of landscape photography, as well as sunrise and sunset images, and the D5100 executes exceedingly well with both the 105 and 300. Very rarely do I ever end up with an under- or over-exposed image regardless of the setting or function that I use.
As mentioned in my D60 review I enjoy the use of a viewfinder and even though the D5100 has liveview I still now prefer the viewfinder. Of course, using the built-in “Selective Color” function means I have to use liveview and that is fine. And, speaking of which, selective color works just great. I have experimented with it on various types of scenes, all hand-held without a tripod, and the results are quite remarkable considering the unit snaps two photos. That, in itself, says much about Nikon’s VR capabilities.
I greatly enjoy the 3” display, over my D60’s smaller one. Not just for the size, but the color clarity is superb. The addition of the articulating display was brilliant on Nikon’s part as it assists framing difficult shots with relative ease.
The performance of the D5100 in low-light situations, with either the 105 or 300, is outstanding. I have not yet experimented with the "Active D-Lighting" function that works to improve the dynamic range between low and high light, so cannot address that. Once I have done so, I shall update my review.
As a final note, I am, at this point, keeping my D60, and have the 105 on one of the cameras and the 300 on the other because I just hate to take the time to change a lens and I do still get great images from the D60. However, depending on what I plan to shoot the D5100 gets first choice of lens and the D60 takes the backseat.
For the money I do not think the D5100 can be beat for quality of performance.

Great products & quality
I recently purchased my Christmas present. Forty years ago I got into film photography before our kids came along. I was very interested in portraiture and landscapes. Five years or so ago I purchased a fairly inexpensive point and shoot camera, but just became disappointed with the quality of my pictures. I started reviewing camera reviews on the web and decided my choice came down to a new Nikon D5100 or camera from a competitor. One day with several hours to spare I went to a local Wolf Camera store, met Jeremiah and was really leaning toward the competitor. I told him my story, listened to his comments and advice and walked out with a new Nikon D5100 d-SLR and three new additional Nikon AF-S lenses. I went to a local book store and picked out a couple of books and went home read the books and shot some pictures. While I am far from an expert, I already know that my new camera and lenses provide me much greater flexibility than I had with my old film camera. I’m not looking to be a professional and while it may take this old foggy a while to become really familiar with my new camera, this mid-range d-SLR camera and lenses are going to provide me some great pictures. I go to the store and ask a few questions, go shoot some pictures, get out my books and owner’s manual and study a little bit more. I plan to take a few photo classes. This camera will do almost anything I will ever ask of it and it’s obvious that Nikon is top quality photo equipment. I have been most satisfied.

Great shots, Easy to use
I love this camera. I went back and forth between the D5100 and the Canon T3i. I found the Nikon to be far more intuitive.
One of the best features of this camera is that it is so versatile. The automatic setting allows me to use the camera like a point and shoot when I just need to grab that quick shot, while the manual modes give me the ability to get creative and put my own touch on the shot.

Nikon has superior features
The first Nikon SLR I bought resides at the bottom of Da Nang Harbor, South Vietnam (1968). I waited 43 years to purchase another. As far as I am concerned, the Nikon D5100 SLR VR is the King of cameras. This camera has so many features and is much more advanced than the one I had before, it was worth the wait. I always keep it in a locked case and always use the neck strap unless it is on a tri-pod, then it is never out of my sight. I never loan it to anyone. The ability to use a remote shutter release is almost beyond comprehension. Technology has come so far in a relatively short time. I still haven’t mastered all the features this camera has to offer but I’m getting there.

So many features, so much to learn
I use a Nikon D3100 at the office, so when I picked up this camera for myself, I thought it would be a quick learn... I was wrong. While it has generally the same layout, it has a host of features and capabilities that go far beyond what I thought it would have. Great effects settings that are surprisingly easy to get to once you read the instructions. Great optics for sharp images. Solid weight and image stabilization that makes it easy to take the quick shots with a clear image result.
This camera is a winner.

Excellent Camera
I have been in Photography since 1966. I have been a Marine Corps and Navy Photographer as well as a Medical Photographer. I used Nikons in the Marine Corps and while in surgery. I no longer shoot for a living but I find the Nikon D5100 to be just the right balance camera for someone looking for a quality digital camera at a fair price. I now shoot portraits, landscapes and automotive for fun. I find this D5100 to meet all my needs.

Great Product Overall.
First of all, let me say that this was worth every penny! I moved on from a fixed lens camera, the Sony DSC-F828, which I found to be really handy but slow and had aberration littering all of the pictures.
Pros:
This camera has amazing features, and is really user-friendly for those of us just entering photography as beginners/amateurs with peaking interest. It was a helpful info button that lets you know what's going on. Also, the interface is nice in that it gives you a visual of what's going on in your camera [e.g. the camera's aperture/f-stop changing]. Also, for the artsy fartsy crowd, it has cool effects and loads of scene's you can choose from. Oh, and the HDR feature is really quirky and makes for interesting pictures with less post-capture editing.
Cons:
My only qualm with this camera is that the white balance can be off in indoors lighting, and the Preset doesn't always work that well. In dim Fluorescent lighting such as in classrooms/lecture halls [I'm a student], the white balance gets a bit confused and pictures come out dull and bluish - in sunlight though, it does an amazing job.
The Bottom Line:
As a student, I love this camera and found it to be an amazing upgrade from my last camera; it works really well and is really quick and has cool effects for the amateurs, but it lacks in the white balance category.

So far, very excited with my Nikon D5100
I've always wanted to be a photographer, my dream, but life took me other areas. Always been the family photographer, drive the grandkids crazy, pose here & there and everywhere. Now I have this wonderful camera, have been reviewing the Video and learning bit by bit what this camera can do, WOW, so far have been very very happy with the sharp, natural, vibrant colors, the more I read and learn the more I know I can enhance the Family Portraits and the Landscape photo's I love to take. My sweetface husband and I travel alot and I love to capture what we see and share with love ones. I am sooooo happy I purchased this camera because I am seeing results from pictures I had never seen before from a "Not" professional photographer like me. LOVE NIKON!!!! Highly recommend this camera!!!

1st DSLR - Awesome
It was between a bridge super-zoom and DSLR and i'm glad i picked up this camera. I bought the 18-55 VR kit with 55-300 telephoto zoom and it's awesome. I'm mostly starting shooting in Auto Mode, but will everntually experiment with rest of options.
Camera has a great feel to it & pictures come out looking sharp.

Great product with a little quirk
I have used this camera for two weeks and find it to be a wonderful camera suitable to meet needs of any photo enthusiast. HDR, tilted screen, ADL are great and so is the picture quality. Found noise upto ISO 1600 to be acceptable. Auto ISO does work differently in newer Nikon models like D3100,D5100 and D7000 so in comparison to D40 or D90 this one will push ISO higher than expectations to balance background.

I would boil it down to these high level points: The D5100 has slightly better image quality and low light performance. The T3i has a bit better user interface (easier to get at common functions) and more control over video shooting. There are other differences, but these were the most significant ones in my opinion. My friend is considering the D5100 and I was under the impression that any G type lens would work, but not all G lenses are AF-S and not all AF-S lenses are G type. The Nikon spec page for the D5100 has been changed sometime in the past month or two to say just AF-S. I recall it saying any AF-S, G, or AF-I lens was ok? I know a popular review out there that claims it HAS to be a G lens, but I don't believe this would be true....

If anyone else is following this, I have gotten the correct answer.The D5100 CAN auto focus with both AF-S lenses AND AF-I lenses.
It will auto focus with an AF-S lens that is not a G lens.
It will not auto focus with a G lens that is not also AF-S, despite what a popular review reports.
Therefore, there is no NIkon fisheye that will auto focus with the D5100.

I was reading an article that said one cause of pixelated photos is an ISO setting that is too high. Check your ISO setting and play around with it. I can usually shoot good clear pictures with my ISO around 400-600 in low light. This will require a slower shutter speed or larger apeture. Though you could probably purchase a generic plastic LCD film protector (Like a flexible version of what you would use on the iphone or ipod). Just goes on like a sticker. Doesn't protect from breakage, but scratches are handled well.Answer:

Shutterbug magazine posted Jack Neubart's review of the D5100 D-SLR on its website. Overall, Neubart was impressed with the camera. He noted that Live View and camcorder users will "love the camera's vari-angle monitor." He also found that continued use of the LCD did not cause a battery drain. Neubart liked some of the camera's Effects modes, including Color Sketch and Selective Color. He found the Auto White Balance to work very well, "AWB ably handled a variety of lighting situations, especially mixed lighting, and proved to be my go-to white balance setting." He was also impressed with the quality of the kit lens that came with the camera. "In the end, the D5100 and 18-55mm VR combo very nicely handled practically anything I threw at it," he added.
