I'm just blown away!
I upgraded to the D5100 from a D70 kit, This one has Nikkor vr lenses. 18-55 and 55-300. My first test was to see what the close up feature did. Absolutely amazing! Unless you are photographing bugs it does just about everything a 60mm macro lens does. I love all the pre-set options though I am primarily an old school "mahual everything" guy having cut my teeth on an old Nikon F some 65 years ago. The view screen is sharp and clear, and the option of focus points is fantastic. In short this is a camera for everyone from the novice to the super advanced amateur. In fact I would not hesitate to use it in professional work. Bottom line I love everything about it.

I am in love....
I am a very, very, very amateur shutterbug. I have been using my girlfriend's D50 for about the last year or so, but the flash is broken (common Nikon problem), and I wanted to have a camera of my own. I mainly shoot two things - 1/6 action figures (12 inches) and my beautiful 2005 Acura TSX. I purchased the camera about two weeks ago. I absolutely adore the D5100! The pictures are beautiful!
I have only two problems so far. One, I like to shoot using a remote, and unfortunately after only a few seconds, if you have the timer mode set to remote, it resets, meaning you have to go through the menu to put it back to remote. On top of that, setting the Function button to Timer only gives the option of 5-second timer, with no remote option. Second, I was able to borrow a coworker's macro lens, and I was sad to find that the D5100 has no internal motor to drive the lens in AF mode, unlike the D50, which was able to drive it just fine. It's okay, since the lenses are still compatible in MF mode, but just a little dissappointing.
Overall, I love my new camera, and I would definitely recommend it to anyone wanting a bit more than your average camera. Sorry if my review isn't all that technical.

I love my Camera
So far i have nothing to complain about. So many features that i am still learning them. Took some excellent pics the other day on auto setting and can imagine what it will look like once i've mastered the camera. I love the swivel screen and especially the effects (color isolation, miniaturization and so on). The only negative is not with the camera but the battery life. I wish Nikon will come out with a better battery for such a wonderful camera.

Great camera!
The D5100 is my second DSLR. This thing is amazing for the price and the quality photos I can get with it. The more I learn about photography the better the photos become and the camera just keeps pumping out shots as I tell it. It is a very versatile camera. I mostly shoot in Aperature priority, but I have used some of the other features and they work just fine. I also have the 55-200mm ED IR VR II lens and the pictures im getting are fascinating. I have not recorded any HD video yet but I plan to. I also really like the 11 focus points in the viewfinder compared to the 3 I have in my D40. My D40 still works great but I can get better cropping and macro shots with the D5100. My D40's shutter response is slightly faster than the D5100 but that is my only complaint so far. But it's not even a complaint really because it doesn't bother me at all.

Great DSLR- Have no complaints
This is a great starter camera, the Nikon School Guide to photography that came with it gives a great basic understanding of how to start using some of the advanced features of the camera. Ive had it for 2 weeks and already have some unique beautiful pictures. With the two packaged lenses (18-55 VR and 55-300 VR) i have everything i need. Very pleased with this camera!

Great featues in an entry-level DSLR!
With the limited time owning, and upgrading from an old Panasonic junker, this camera is beyond amazing. The crispness and clarity are light years ahead of the old camera. Some of the built in features are so fun to play with, and the deal at Best Buy was hard to resist and the financing options just made it happen on the spot.
Overall, I'm pleased with the build quality, and the photo quality. The battery life is decent. The features and manual settings are plentiful. Lens changes are a snap.
I can't compare it to any other DSLR camera, because this is my first. I'm sure I would have been pleased with a competitors brand, but I'm glad I researched, and I'm completely satisfied with my Nikon D5100.

Great Entry Level DSLR
This is my first DSLR and it has been a great experience! The documentation that comes with the camera (hard copy and digital) is written in such a way that a goof like me can understand. I have gotten several compliments on the quality of my photos and the brilliance of the colors.

User Friendly and POWERFUL all in one package
I've held off getting back into photography since film, waiting for the digital cameras to catch up with quality. The D5100 is exactly what I've been waiting for.
I was insulted when someone called it an entry level camera, It has more features than some more expensive cameras and the quality of the prints are at the level of professional cameras.

Novice reviewer
I've had my wonderful D5100 for a little over a week so even though I haven't had a chance to get to know it well, I can tell you I think it's wonderful and especially want to thank you for making the user's manual so easy to understand by someone who has just begun to learn. I doubly appreciated the ability to download the manual to my PC because I have been able to sit in front of my (large) monitor and keep the manual information on screen while I get acquainted with the different features of the camera. It's so helpful to be able to see it magnified on my screen and not have to fumble with the paper manual (though I do keep it in my camera case for quick referral when I am not at home). I'm also going to download it to my laptop for more portability...just wanted to tell you that even though I've not gotten far, I'm delighted with my D5100 and look forward to a long and happy relationship.

Great for my / your first foray into the digital world.
I have owned Nikon since the early '70's (in fact i have an 'F' with a 1967 serial number).
I already have 5 other Nikon cameras and there was no way I was going to let my 15 Nikkor lenses go by the wayside. Nikon has of course changed since the days of the F / F2, no more titanium bodies, too much plastic etc, etc, and of course etcetera. However the quality of this camera is exceptional, I have not had a bit of problem with it or the 3 new Nikkor lenses I have purchased since getting this camera.
Wish it had not gone down in price, but, if you're on the bleeding edge sometimes you have to pay it.
I really got this to do video and have decked it out with follow focus, LCD Hood and a Matte box, and the video is more than I could have hoped for in a setup for less than a thousand bux. Buy this Camera!

When I brought my D5100 home for the first time, the first picture I took was of a pop can... and I fell in love.
This camera can do so much!
HD Videos, amazing effects, sepia, black&white, vivid, neutral, landscape, portrait, pets, action, food, plants.... the list goes on!
I always wanted an SLR camera since I was in 8th grade, years ago. But I never thought it would be a DSLR!
My D5100 is one of my most prized posessions and I couldn't be happier with my purchase. I wouldn't trade my D5100 for anything else!

The best for the price !
I have owned alot of digital camera's and decided it's about time I jumped into DSLR. After alot of research, the D5100 is my choice for the features and price range. And did i made the right decision! In the short while i have this camera, i have been shooting like a pro. The ease of use and overall functionality are incredible. It brought out the inner photographer in me and my wife loves it. With a baby coming up, this would definitely be put to use. Although I suggest new user read supplemental books or dvd to enhance experience. After all said and done, this camera nailed it.

D5100
I got this camera for Christmas after owning a D50. I'm still a beginner in photography but this camera does not dissapoint. For the price point, I really doubt you would find a better camera. It's easy to use and has a good feel. In addition, the kit lens that comes with it, is pretty decent all on its own. The sensor on this camera seems to be better at light gathering than the T3i what I tested them against eachother but that's my opinion.

Amazing video/photo´s
I bought Nikon D5100 1month after it came out in store (Sweden).
Still got it, i record alot of videos in Full HD 1920x1080.
Amazing colors, 30 fps, alot of effects like "selective color" even when you record movies.
My wife taking beautiful pictures on our daughter, nature, sports and flowers etc.
D7000 doing better pictures but video recording is alot better with D5100 in my opinion.
Very good price, half price compare to D7000.
Its only one thing to complain about, there is no 60fps 720HD mode.
Otherwise its an ultimate cheap camera.

Super Fine Level Moment Keeper!
This is really good to say on vivid and crisp image producer, like no other.
For me, whatever camera I pick, does not matter to me at all. Just give me good details of what i need.
And Nikon has it equally I have to has it.
Finally I've got this camera as my first entry dslr, my own camera that I bought it.
(Previously, I just borrowed another entry level from friends to take shots)
Then, ... it's worth! easy to use! stunning, creative function like upper class.
Lovely tilting lcd monitor and live view is really helpful even sometimes lag and slow... but that's ok.

great overall
Great overall, the 4 fps is a little slow for sports but I knew that going in. All of the features that I need are there. I would like a better choice of lenses, but I'm sure that is to follow.

Exceptional camera value for the price range
For the price, this camera is a great value and performer. Granted you can do better, but it costs more. Nice features and effects and really easy to use once you get familiar with it. Menues, controls, tilt/swivel screen are great. Have taken nearly 2000 pictures over the past 6 months, and aside from operator error, the pictures are very good. Bottom line is, this camera makes it easy to take good pictures.

Nikon D5100. This is a must-have camera
My first Nikon digital camera was the d50. While I 've learned to take great photos, I needed something more. Hence, came the D5100. Wow; it can do so much more. I am amazed at its capabilites. On-camera editing, and editing at the turn of any dial. Light handlng-like the D51, and muti-angle viewing. This is a great camera.

Powerhouse of a Camera for the Price.
Bought it for my 15 year old daughter to teach her photography as a hobby. Ex-Canon owner myself (50D), but loved the features of the D5100 in the store. After playing around with it for a while and a few photographs later, I fell in love with it.
Now my daughter enjoys this one, and Im getting the D7000 for myself, the D5100 made me enjoy photography all over again.
Great Product, I highly recommend this Camera.
My Experience: Taken several DSLR courses, and photography was a great part of my job for almost 15 years.

Very Nice Camera

The D5100 is an outsanding camera for the price. Loaded with easily accessible features and a very user friendly overall — even my wife can take nice photos with it and she's usually intimidated by camera technology! I would boil it down to these high level points: The D5100 has slightly better image quality and low light performance. The T3i has a bit better user interface (easier to get at common functions) and more control over video shooting. There are other differences, but these were the most significant ones in my opinion. My friend is considering the D5100 and I was under the impression that any G type lens would work, but not all G lenses are AF-S and not all AF-S lenses are G type. The Nikon spec page for the D5100 has been changed sometime in the past month or two to say just AF-S. I recall it saying any AF-S, G, or AF-I lens was ok? I know a popular review out there that claims it HAS to be a G lens, but I don't believe this would be true....

If anyone else is following this, I have gotten the correct answer.The D5100 CAN auto focus with both AF-S lenses AND AF-I lenses.
It will auto focus with an AF-S lens that is not a G lens.
It will not auto focus with a G lens that is not also AF-S, despite what a popular review reports.
Therefore, there is no NIkon fisheye that will auto focus with the D5100.

I believe the first answer is incorrect. I am pretty sure that the D5100 will auto focus just fine with AF-I, so the lens does not have to be an AF-S. I was reading an article that said one cause of pixelated photos is an ISO setting that is too high. Check your ISO setting and play around with it. I can usually shoot good clear pictures with my ISO around 400-600 in low light. This will require a slower shutter speed or larger apeture. Because you have to set everything on manual. What do you mean by quality? You should try and shoot RAW or at least Jpeg fine. Read up on Aperture, Shutter speed, Iso, And white balance to get your feet wet

Shutterbug magazine posted Jack Neubart's review of the D5100 D-SLR on its website. Overall, Neubart was impressed with the camera. He noted that Live View and camcorder users will "love the camera's vari-angle monitor." He also found that continued use of the LCD did not cause a battery drain. Neubart liked some of the camera's Effects modes, including Color Sketch and Selective Color. He found the Auto White Balance to work very well, "AWB ably handled a variety of lighting situations, especially mixed lighting, and proved to be my go-to white balance setting." He was also impressed with the quality of the kit lens that came with the camera. "In the end, the D5100 and 18-55mm VR combo very nicely handled practically anything I threw at it," he added.
