Unexpectedly love this camera more than any other!
After borrowing a friend D90 a bunch of times, i knew i wanted my own. After checking out a local camera shop I was torn between the D90 and D5100. I did a lot of research and decided on the D5100 as my camera.
I really liked the D90 everytime i used it, but now after using the D5100 i would never look back. Its easy to use, has a ton of cool features, and the swivel screen LCD display comes in handy more times than you'd ever imagine.

Great Step UP
I've been a point and shooter for 35 years and finally decided to step up to a digital SLR. Did a LOT of research befor I decided on the D5100. I purchased the 5100 about 3 months ago and am still learning about all of the things that I can do with this camera. Meanwhile I;m getting great photos and movies by setting the dial to auto or one of the scene modes.
The function buttons seem to be located where they are easy to find and as I use it more I am able to find most of them without removeing my eye from the VF.
Speaking of which the view finder is bright, clear and easy to use with all of the info you need visible. I like the autofocus positions in the VF and the ability to move the point of focus, comes in very handy for those off center subjects.
I was concerned about the additional weight of a DSLR vs a P&S but I find this is not a problem for me. I added the Nikon 18-105mm lens to my bag which gives me the extra reach I wanted and only adds 4 or 5 oz. to the unit. Love that lens.
I am glad I got this camera and expect to have this one for a long time.

Ease of use
This is my first "real camera" and I'm loving it. I've only had it two weeks, but I love the ease of use.
Thank you.

So far, so good!
Plan to take a course with a professional photographer to learn how to get the most out of our D5100..
Probably will get a longer than 200mm telephoto lens.

All lenses that fit a D90 will fit on a D5100, but they must be AF-S type lenses to auto-focus.Answer:
Yes, as it is a F mount, but I don't think you will have autofocus on it...personnaly, I have the 1979 Nikkor lens 55mm micro and it fits on my D3000, I just have to make manual focus that's all.Sep 23, 2011 by

Nikon offers two types of autofocus digital camera bodies: those with a built-in focus drive motor and those which require a lens to have a motor. Cameras such as the D5100 do not have a focus motor in it, but the D7000 does. All Nikon NIKKOR lenses have an "F" mount" so they fit any D-SLR body. While the D5100 can use a lens with no focus motor (an “AF” lens) you would have to manually turn the focus ring to bring the subject in to sharp focus.Answer:
All nikon DSLR's use a F bayonet mount, they will work on all DSLR's, just a matter if they will autofocus. The D5100 has no internal focus motor so it can only use lenses marked af-s in order to auto focus. The D7000 has an internal focus motor so it will auto focus with all lenses marked af and af-s.Answer:
AF-S lenses will work with both the D7000 and they D5100. AF lenses are without internal focus motors and will not work with D5100 (lacks lens motor) but will work with D7000. There are also third party lenses that do not have internal focus motors. All will work in manual focus. Any lens that works with your D40 will also auto focus on both the D5100 and d7000

I own the D5100 & D7000, I like them both. The 5100 tops out @ 4 Frames per second, The D7000 takes 6 frames per second & has a faster Buffer rate,-it will load images faster to the memory card. For Motocross you need speed. I would recomend the D7000 & a 70-200 f2.8 lens. This is an expensive setup but will get the job done.
Good luck & have fun, I raced Motocross when I was a young man & had a BLAST !
PS, get a fast 16 Gig SD card & a spare battery too.

Answer:
The D5100 is can shoot at 4 frames per second, which should be fast enough for fast action. As far as lenses are concerned you will want something with a fast maximum apeture.
Since gymnasiums are dimly lit, you might want to look at the following lenses:
AF-S NIKKOR 24-120mm f/4G ED VR. This will give you the reach you may need but you may have to bump up the ISO on the camera to get a faster shutter speed.
AF-S NIKKOR 85mm f/1.8. This will give you the speed you need but you will have to get closer to the action.
AF-S NIKKOR 70-200mm f/2.8 ED VR II. This is a great lens but it's also expensive.
If you are unsure about any lens, I would try renting them from your local photography shop so you can see how the lens works for your shooting conditions.
Hope this helps,

Will the pop-up flash trigger my Speedlights? How many groups will it control?
I'm confused. It seems like people are saying that this camera won't have full CLS, that the pop-up won't be able to control off-camera Speedlights. If not, will this feature be added via firmware later?

Will the pop-up flash OF THE 5100 trigger my Speedlights? How many groups will it control?
I asked this question earlier today and got a generic answer from the staff that didn't answer the question. This is specifically aimed at the new D5100. Will the pop-up flash of a D5100 trigger Speedlights in the CLS? If not, what do I need to buy to use my CLS speedlights?

You can use the SU-800 Commander on your camera.Answer:
By all accounts no, well not via commander mode anyway, but I could be wrong. Then again depends what flashes you are using, if its SB-700, 800 or 900 then you will be able to control them manually via SU-4 mode on the flash.
I am interested in buying D5100. when is it available in the market to buy?

20 minutes is just the max length for one clip. You can record multiple 20 minute clips until you fill your memory card up.
I'm trying to shoot training videos of myself. While recording, the autofocus goes in and out. Sometimes it's where I want it (on my face) and other times in on my hands when gesturing or the background. I need to keep my face in sharp focus.
I've increased the f-stop to try to increase the depth-of-field without much luck. When I switch to manual mode, I can't get a sharp enough picture either. Are there any best practices to using the video elements to my new D5100?

you can change your auto focus to single auto, it sounds to me like you may be using it on continuous servo focus where it keeps finding the moving object or another way to try it would be on portrait mode it recognizes faces and tends to follow them rather than what is centered or moving.May 12, 2011 by

you're probably using the AF in the wrong mode. AF-S only focuses once, and in the focus area you selected. AF-C follows moving people (that's better for fashion shows) as long as you keep your shutter release halfway down. BUT, if you are using live view, forget about instant and precise focus. so DON'T use live view for fashion photography.Answer:

No there is no grip/battery pack for the 5100 specifically. but you can buy the one for the d3100, and then sand or cut off the small lip on the one side and it will fit just fine.I did this and it works great. I have two batterys in mine, and its great for turning the camera longways to take portait style shots (button on the grip too).
