Nikon D3100 I purchased the D3100 as a 'light weight' alternative the the D3 I normally use , as I planned for a 10-day backpacking trip to Philmont last July. The D3100 camera preformed flawlessly the entire trip. I had no issues with battery power management even though I purchased two additional batteries. Nor any issues with dust gathering on the sensor since the camera had a sensor cleaning function built into the camera. The simple UI controls for adjusting the flash, made the pop-up flash perfect for adding fill light for those difficult lighting situations. My only regret was that I didn't bring 2-D3100 cameras as it was frequently out of my hands being used by all the boys on the trek. JHM April 1, 2012
Finally got my 1st DSLR! my D3100 arrived this afternoon and I came home to get familiar with the settings and give a tryout. Let me tell you that my desires to ever go back to the days of my 35 film is long past now. Light weight, quick to snap and use as easy as my point and shoot Coolpix. If you have the desire to get into a digital SLR then I am going to highly recommend this for what ever you have a need for, the photos I will attach are my first with this, I'm very impressed and want to learn more. Thanks Nikon October 22, 2010
Awesome Camera.. Got this for Christmas 2011...love it...still learning what all it can do...have three grandchildren..so need I say more...would totally recommend this camera... July 15, 2012

I recently had some exposure problems with my nikon, but when I reset the settings it seemed better...except for the shutter sounding like it had a 2" speed. The pictures are turning out fine now (well maybe slightly overexposed) but the shutter sounds like it is moving so much slower than 1/60 of a second...it's worrying me. :( help my camera! has anyone had these problems?

How do I get specific warming filter effects with the white balance adjustment?

Was this helpful?helpful0unhelpful0
I'm coming from the film world and used 81A and 81B filters extensively. Auto white balance would negate the results so is there a reference chart that shows how to adjust the white balance, say in Day Light Fluorescence setting (5500K, average daylight color temperature) to give the effects for the 81A and B filters? Or would it be better to set at Day Light Fluorescent and put a filter on the lens? (But that would be negating the power of the camera, wouldn't it!) I have read that setting the +4 toward amber and +2 toward green will simulate a warming filter, but which one. Surely there is someone who as made these tests and have some adjustment numbers that say +4 amber and +2 green gives a warming effect but do those settings give you an 81A, 81B, or 81C effect or something close to one of those (which is useless without a definite filter effect). That would be like marking an X on the side of your boat to mark a good fishing hole. I am color blind so I need something more than trial and error to get it right and know which effect I can expect from certain adjustments. . It would also be nice to have similar information on cooling filters, 80 series. Any ideas?

Answer:
Set your white balance to shadow, clouds, or flash. Flash will give you the less amout of red and then it goes clouds and shadow with the most amount of red. Depending on what camera you have you can change the (k) setting on the camera using the front dail to go hotter or cooler as well. Sense you are color blind you can use the (k) setting and create a chart with what number you want to use for what setting. Hope this helps.

ml-l3 infrared remote is the most useful, and then on you have a choice of flashes (any iTTL compatible sb-series flash is good), and of course, there are the lenses, the extra battery, the power supply, finder eyepieces and a whole lot more from 3rd party suppliers. as to what comes in the package: neck strap, front and back cap for the lens, body cap for the body, a charger and a battery, plus some software cds and an owner's manual.

I have owed my D3100 since mid-June 2011 and pleased with the overall performance of the camera and use it when i don't want to carry my D3. the problem I am having is the symbols on the +/- button and i (info) buttons are beginning to wear off to the point that I can no longer read the symbols. IS there anything that can be done to correct this problem? I have owned my D-3 for +4-years and never have had a problem with nomenclature rubbing off the control buttons.

Answer:
For the typical 4x6 small size is more than enough - anything above 2 megapixels is good enough.

The D3100 "small" resolution is 2,304 x 1,536 which is good for pictures up to about 15" x 10"
