Nikon D3100 I purchased the D3100 as a 'light weight' alternative the the D3 I normally use , as I planned for a 10-day backpacking trip to Philmont last July. The D3100 camera preformed flawlessly the entire trip. I had no issues with battery power management even though I purchased two additional batteries. Nor any issues with dust gathering on the sensor since the camera had a sensor cleaning function built into the camera. The simple UI controls for adjusting the flash, made the pop-up flash perfect for adding fill light for those difficult lighting situations. My only regret was that I didn't bring 2-D3100 cameras as it was frequently out of my hands being used by all the boys on the trek. JHM April 1, 2012
Finally got my 1st DSLR! my D3100 arrived this afternoon and I came home to get familiar with the settings and give a tryout. Let me tell you that my desires to ever go back to the days of my 35 film is long past now. Light weight, quick to snap and use as easy as my point and shoot Coolpix. If you have the desire to get into a digital SLR then I am going to highly recommend this for what ever you have a need for, the photos I will attach are my first with this, I'm very impressed and want to learn more. Thanks Nikon October 22, 2010
Awesome Camera.. Got this for Christmas 2011...love it...still learning what all it can do...have three grandchildren..so need I say more...would totally recommend this camera... July 15, 2012
Excellent camera for probably twice the price! Fantastic camera, I have owned this camera now for over one year. I have learned so much from this camera and it has given me some super quility pictures. It is worth every penny. Here are some samples. July 14, 2012
Excellent machine. It's my first digital slr camera. I am very pleased with the resources and results July 14, 2012

Answer:
You get the kit lens (18mm-55mm). If you shop around, there are sites like Adorama and BH that do bundles and will add another lens at a discounted price.

Answer:
When a flash is in the hot shoe it turns off the built in flash. Pocket wizard has a remote trigger that has a hot shoe on top so you can have a remote flash and flashed mounted on top of the pocket wizard. Kinda pricy though.

Answer:
If you go to the shooting menu and change the built in flash from ttl to manual, there will be no preflash to trigger your external photocell. As an extra benefit if you do this and also turn autofocus to manual, shutter lag will be very fast.

Answer:
I haven't had any problems.

When you plug it in a "camera" button should come up in the upper toolbar.

Check your SD card, that may be the source of the problems (I've had some issues with mine).

Answer:
I presume that you have the D-3100 with the standard 18-55 Kit lens only. I would suggest you replace the 18-55 lens with the older 18-70 mm f/3.5-4.5 DX AF-S Nikkor, if you can find a good condition used one; or if you can afford the price, get the 18-55 mm f/2.8 DX Nikkor zoom, for your basic walkaround lens (either one works well for this).
Then I would add the 55-300 mm DX VR zoom for the long end. with two lenses you've got most things covered.

The video button is the orange button on the back of the D3100. Press that to start recording, again to stop it. The switch around is the live view switch, that switches between using the viewfinder and the screen to view what you're shooting.

Answer:
The D3100 is a beginners camera and fulfills role very well. The second Nikon option is the D5100 which is very similar to the D3100 but better in everyway. Though it does cost more.

Question mark and flash symbol are flashing in the viewfinder

I recently bought the YN-560 speedlight and used it with the D3100 to take several test shots without any issues. After several shots, I noticed I was no longer able to take pictures. A question mark and flash symbol were flashing in the bottom-right corner of the viewfinder and pressing the shutter button wouldn't let me autofocus and take a picture.

After removing the speedlight, this is still happening and I can't take any pictures even without the speedlight attached. Can someone help me figure out what is wrong?

Thank you.

Answer:
Actually, I have an update. This issue is happening without the speedlight. The 35mm lens isn't autofocusing at all. When I press the shutter release, there is no motor noise and I'm unable to take the shot. With manual focus it works fine.

The kit lens and the 55-200mm lens work just fine, so I'm wondering what could have all of a sudden happened to my 35mm. It had been working just fine for a couple of weeks since I got it. This happened only after a few minutes of using the YN-560 flash.

Could this be a defective lens? But it seems quite coincidental that the defect would occur just now.

Sounds like your non-Nikon brand flash is not communicating properly with your camera.

I have a Celestron 102GT telescope and a piece I've bought from Orion to connect my camera to the telescope. I can get it to focus and all, but I don't know how to get it to take a picture! What camera settings should I use?

Answer:
I think there may be some confusion here. There is manual focusing, and also manual exposure. Using a telescope mounted on a D3100 you will need to set both the focus and exposure to manual (refer to your instruction manual). There will not be any light metering using the telescope, so you will need a separate light meter to determine proper exposure.

Answer:
The camera needs to be set for manual focus. If the camera is set to "S" auto-focus, it locks the shutter release until the camera achieves focus. Since you are focusing manually, the auto-focus selector needs to be set to "M".

Answer:
The D31000 does NOT have any internal memory for photos. Therefore, if you didn't have an SD card inserted, no photos were stored. See page 147 of the D3100's manual, on how to enable the "Slot Empty Release Lock", to prevent this misfortune in the future.

The D3100 specs show that it has and "Auto-area AF Mode," but doesn't mention "Single Point Auto Focus" like the D5100. I use single point 90% of the time to make sure I focus on a person's eyes. Does anyone know if the D3100 has single point focus too? That's a major handicap for anyone shooting people pictures.

Thanks, Bill
