Nikon D3100
I purchased the D3100 as a 'light weight' alternative the the D3 I normally use , as I planned for a 10-day backpacking trip to Philmont last July. The D3100 camera preformed flawlessly the entire trip. I had no issues with battery power management even though I purchased two additional batteries. Nor any issues with dust gathering on the sensor since the camera had a sensor cleaning function built into the camera. The simple UI controls for adjusting the flash, made the pop-up flash perfect for adding fill light for those difficult lighting situations. My only regret was that I didn't bring 2-D3100 cameras as it was frequently out of my hands being used by all the boys on the trek. JHM

Finally got my 1st DSLR!
my D3100 arrived this afternoon and I came home to get familiar with the settings and give a tryout. Let me tell you that my desires to ever go back to the days of my 35 film is long past now. Light weight, quick to snap and use as easy as my point and shoot Coolpix. If you have the desire to get into a digital SLR then I am going to highly recommend this for what ever you have a need for, the photos I will attach are my first with this, I'm very impressed and want to learn more. Thanks Nikon

Answer:
As the User's Manual would tell you, it's the memory card access lamp. When the camera is turned off, it flashes when you put in the SD card. It is "registering" that there is a memory card that was just installed. If the camera is telling you to to wait while you're shooting, it's because the camera is probably busy trying to write to the card from the internal buffer (if you've taken multiple shots in rapid succession).Jun 22, 2011 by

try to turn it off, remove the SD card, put in another one, and turn it on. if the green light is constantly on again and the camera makes you wait forever, take your body to a nikon service point. if with the other card the camera boots up OK, then you may have a defective SD card. try reading it on your PC, if it fails, throw it away. if it works, save the images and format the card, and try it in the d3100 again.Has staff answer

You can check the Nikon website to help with this, but I have the answer for you: No, it is incompatible with the D3100. However, it is listed as being compatible with the following DSLRs: D3000, D5000, D5100, and the D7000. There are more that were listed, but I focused on those that had the four-digit model designation.Jun 22, 2011 by

Hi, I can help guide you in the right direction on this. For sports photography, it's all about freezing the action. This means using higher shutter speeds - like 1/250 at a minimum or 1/500 and higher to stop the action. When shooting with any DSLR, D3100 or any other model, you should set the camera to S or shutter priority mode and set the shutter speed at least that high. If your lens is fast enough (usually an f/2.8 or f/4, but no slower) the camera will handle the aperture setting automatically. If you have a consumer zoom or telephoto lens that is f/4 or f/5.6, it is best if you are shooting in daylight conditions. Shooting indoor sports (like in high school gymnasiums or sports arenas) or night time games requires a fast lens with an f/2.8 maximum aperture. I've shot night football games and used flash with it and set the shutter speed to 1/250 to sync with the flash. I got good results that were usable in the newspapers that I shot for.Jun 22, 2011 by

From what I've been told, the difference is primarily the megapixels, the D5000 being the higher end. We have the D3100 and if you are using this just as a casual user and not looking to get into professional photography, than it is perfect. Takes HD video as well, so covers both aspects. My wife and I have never had a camera that can shoot like this!!! Very happy with it. Hope this helps.Jun 8, 2011 by

d3100 is newer, and has the new wundersensor (even if with less megapixel). d5000 has a swivel lcd screen (but it pivots rather badly, if swivel screen is important for you, you should go for a d5100). d3100 also has better video.
When I try to switch my settings mode the settings don't change as I move the dial from P to A or S. It only stays on P or if I'm on the automatic settings it will only show up as Portrait or Sports settings. Do I have a setting misaligned or is there something wrong with the camera?

It is entirely possible that there is a problem with the dial selector on your camera. If you are still able to, I would suggest returning it (provided you still have the receipt and original warranty and registration cards) and getting a replacement. Also, as long as it is within the warranty period, you should be able to get this taken care of without too much trouble. But, be sure to make copies of your documentation and shipping receipts/documents and have it properly insured so that in the event something catastrophic happens en route (if you mail ordered it), you're still covered.Jun 22, 2011 by

The image stabilization that you may be thinking of is actually in the lens. The kits that are sold (camera and one or two lenses) would have a VR type lens in it (as indicated on the lens barrel with the VR lettering). The VR stands for Vibration Reduction. It compensates for camera shake when handholding while shooting. This is Nikon's version of what Canon has for its line of high-end professional lenses (IS or Image Stabilization). This feature is part of the lens, not the camera body itself.Jun 21, 2011 by

From my own experience with trying out my SB-25 Speedlight on my D3100, it doesn't seem to work correctly. The TTL function doesn't work as it just seems to do a full dump of its stored charge. Trying to make other adjustments didn't work, either. I don't believe that the older Speedlights are able to "talk" correctly with the DSLR. It's probably better to go with the newer Speedlights to ensure proper compatability.Jun 23, 2011 by

If you are thinking of trying to charge the battery while it is still in the camera via the USB port, it will not work as that is not what the USB port is for. It is intended for transferring images and video files from the SD card to your computer. There are third-party vendors who make a charging unit that will take the battery and charge it via a USB cable, but probably while plugged into something like a computer tower case with a large power supply or an AC adapter that uses a USB cable connection to charge devices and batteries. But, the bottom line is: No.Jun 21, 2011 by

Answer:
The COMMAND that you are referring to is the Command Dial that is the thumbwheel on the back right-hand side of the camera, just below and behind the Mode Dial. This Command Dial tells the camera what you want it to do (i.e. shutter speed while in S or shutter priority mode, or the aperture setting while in A or aperture priority mode, or the shutter speed/time (as in Bulb) while in M or Manual mode). You should read your User's Manual for your camera so that you can get better familiarized with the camera's functions. A little time invested will help you better understand what is available and how to find them. After that, experiment! Try out the various functions so that you get to know how it works in real time in the real world. Part of the fun of photography is the experimentation and seeing the results that you get. And, best of all, if the results don't work out, you can always delete the images and try again!Jun 21, 2011 by

If it is the older version of AF lens (that is, non-AF-S) and even with the D designation (for Distance information), then the autofocus will not work but everything else on the camera will work with the lens. This is because there is no autofocus motor in the body that has a pin-out that will couple with the lens itself to drive the autofocus mechanism. I found this out the hard way with my AF 80-200mm f/2.8D ED-IF lens when I tried to use it on my D3100. If it were an AF-S lens, like my 17-35mm f/2.8D ED-IF is, then it will. The AF-S designation means that it has the Silent Wave Motor function built into the lens, older AF lenses don't have it built in.Jun 21, 2011 by

D3100 doesnt have internal focus motor. So all the AF lenses will be manual focus on D3100 caera. If you want autofocus function, than you have to use AF-S lenses.
Can the HDMI output be used as an alternative to the viewfinder or LCD for composing a shot? This would be very useful for copying operations where looking at a larger screen would be easier for cropping and focus.

On the D3100, you would need to turn the dial to M (for Manual mode) and then turn the command dial (the thumb wheel on the rear right side of the camera back) all the way to Bulb. The longest setting before that is 30-seconds. With the Bulb setting, it's just like with the old film cameras: You will have to press the shutter release button for as long as you want to make your exposure. That means that you will have to make sure that your camera is mounted on a heavy tripod to reduce or eliminate any vibration while you're holding the button down (yes, you have to hold it down to keep the shutter open). Another problem I foresee is that if you're doing long exposures, it may rapidly drain the battery. Colder temperatures (like those found at night and at higher altitudes) would drain it even quicker. Only experience will tell you what you need to do to ensure that your timed exposure on Bulb will turn out well. Be sure to carry spare EN-EL14 batteries to use.Jun 21, 2011 by

If you only recently bought this camera, you may wish to return it for another one (you saved the receipt and still have the warranty and registration cards, right?). The screen may be DOA (Dead on Arrival) and needs to go back to the manufacturer for repair/replacement. I bought mine new at a Costco and it turned on just fine out of the box. Maybe it's a loose connection on the circuit board, but that's for the repair technician to deal with, not you. Otherwise, it sounds like the LCD screen itself has issues.Jun 22, 2011 by

The movie format that is stored on the SD card is a .MOV file. There is software out there that can be downloaded that will do the conversion for you to MPEG or MP4, but make sure that you trust the source of the download and scan the software to make sure that there isn't any hidden malware. Once you've done the file conversion, you can use any DVD burning software to create your disc. Otherwise, you can just drag and drop it onto your computer's desktop and view it from there by double-clicking on the resulting video file. I am saying this under the assumption that you are doing this on a Windows PC computer. Macintoshes may have their own software that can do this sort of thing for you, but I haven't had much experience with Macs.Jun 21, 2011 by

Answer:
In the User's Manual, it did not say that it would continue the video recording, just that you could take a photo in the middle of recording. When taking the photo, you do notice that it has to fire the shutter just like it was taking a photograph normally. This is an interruption in the flow of the video recording, so it has to stop. You will have to hit the record button again to resume recording. I don't think it was ever intended that you could simultaneously take a photo while still recording video and I'm not presently aware of any manufacturer whose equipment has that capability.Jun 22, 2011 by

I think that what you may be referring to is the Camera Control Pro 2 software, which allows you to view what you are about to shoot. However, it's not made to work with the D3100 (as specified by its system requirements). It will work with the D3, D90, D300 and D700 with LiveView enabled and it will allow you to take photos through your computer or to have it go directly to your computer (via the USB or Firewire cable). I hope that I read their info correctly, but that seems to be the gist of it.Jun 23, 2011 by

Answer:
I just recently purchase a D3100. I have been teaching myself by reading the manual, various website DSLR articles and viewing videos. The Aperture setting (fstop), Shutter speed setting (how fast the shutter blinks) and Film speed (ISO) setting is the heart of your ability as a photographer to be creative. If the person who used the camera was adjusting these settings to be creative then you will probably get blurry or otherwise unsatisfactory pictures unless you change the settings to suit the picture you were taking. The catch-all here is go back to the auto setting until you learn how to use the camera manually. (Also, go back over the manual and redo the setting if necessary. The camera does all the work for you.) Press the shutter button half way down to adjust the lense focus and when your satisfied, shoot. I hope this helps you because this has happened to me as well. I learned how to manually control my camera. It is fun to try different settings and see what they can do to the picture result. If all else fails go to auto mode and shoot away. There is no shame in that.Jul 21, 2011 by

I'm used to 'point and click cameras' and the 3100 is my first higher end camera. I just need to know what the best setting would be to keep the subject (e.g. my family) and the background (e.g. Eiffel Tower) both in focus. When I used the camera on our recent trip I was getting only one or the other (usually the close-up subject was in focus, while the distant background was out of focus). Any suggestions? I leave for our vacation in 3 days. Thanks.
