Nikon D3100 I purchased the D3100 as a 'light weight' alternative the the D3 I normally use , as I planned for a 10-day backpacking trip to Philmont last July. The D3100 camera preformed flawlessly the entire trip. I had no issues with battery power management even though I purchased two additional batteries. Nor any issues with dust gathering on the sensor since the camera had a sensor cleaning function built into the camera. The simple UI controls for adjusting the flash, made the pop-up flash perfect for adding fill light for those difficult lighting situations. My only regret was that I didn't bring 2-D3100 cameras as it was frequently out of my hands being used by all the boys on the trek. JHM April 1, 2012
Finally got my 1st DSLR! my D3100 arrived this afternoon and I came home to get familiar with the settings and give a tryout. Let me tell you that my desires to ever go back to the days of my 35 film is long past now. Light weight, quick to snap and use as easy as my point and shoot Coolpix. If you have the desire to get into a digital SLR then I am going to highly recommend this for what ever you have a need for, the photos I will attach are my first with this, I'm very impressed and want to learn more. Thanks Nikon October 22, 2010

Answer:
No, you cannot change the square to the focus points that you would normally use during normal photography. You can, however, change the size of the square by selecting the AF Area Mode and going to the Live view/Movie selection and choosing among the different AF areas (Face Priority, Wide-area, Normal-area, and Subject Tracking AF).

Answer:
There are no drivers per-se for the D3100. I attached my camera to my computer (which is running Windows XP SP3) and it is recognized. Are you plugging the camera into your computer with the camera already turned on? You should turn it on AFTER you have plugged in the USB cable to your computer.

According to Nikon, it does not work with the D3100. It does, however, work with the following series of DSLRs: D3000, D5000, D5100, and D7000. It is compatible with other DSLRs, you can check on the Nikon website for the listing of compatible cameras. I only focused on those models that have the Dxxxx notation.

Answer:
I'm assuming you're talking about photos, not video. Video I don't know much about. For photo if you turn the control dial to M, you should have full control over all aspects of exposure. The adjustment wheel alone controls shutter. Holding the aperture button on top of the camera and turning the adjustment wheel will control your aperture. Holding the Fn button on the front side of the camera and turning the adjustment wheel will control your ISO (assuming you left the Fn button in the default programable setting). Now when you want to adjust your exposure settings (shutter, aperture, ISO), first half press the shutter release button to activate the camera. If you let the camera sit idle a few seconds all your controls will be idle as well. So give the shutter button a half press to bring up the screen. You'll also notice in the view finder your settings will now display. Now go ahead and start your adjustments. Hope this helps!

I am looking to purchase the d3100 but I do a lot of work at night with long exposure times and a colleague had issues with your d60 and d90 on long exposures leaving a discoloration on the image and he was told it was due to "sensor overheating." What can you tell me about the d3100 and this issue? Thank you for your time and I look forward to your reply.

Answer:
All electrical circuits create random noise, prolonged use of the camera's electrical circuit during long exposure images causes a charge to accumulate within each pixel well of the CCD even in the absence of any light. This is called dark current noise or thermally generated charge and can be seen on the image as small multi-coloured pixels. Astronomical photographers need to take long exposure images due to the dark background of the sky at night to gain the correct exposure for their subject matter, special digital capture devices developed specifically for astronomical telescopes sometimes have a "cooled" CCD, this prevents dark current noise.

Nikon DSLRs, although capable of recording long exposure images are designed for general "earthbound" photography, and images with a long shutter duration may start to display multi-colored pixels on the recorded image. This is normal for cameras of this design. Also the warmer the camera is, the more likely it is that this phenomenon will occur as the electrons become more excited by heat. Therefore for long exposures it is recommended to keep the camera as cool as possible, keeping in mind the rated temperature range of the camera. This means not using it for long exposures soon after it has been hand held for long periods. Also, Noise Reduction will work to remove excessive image noise (with ISO 800 or higher), but it may work just as well to remove stars from a starfield, which is why these cameras are not really designed for astrophotography.

The only thing I found in the manual is to set the aperture before shooting movies, but it doesn't mention anything about the ISO or shutter speed. Is it safe to assume that the shutter is 1/48 (for the cinematic feel of 24fps)? Can I adjust that and the ISO at all?

Answer:
As far as I know, shutter speed doesn't do anything when you're shooting your movies because the actuator is open. Shutter speed only applies when taking pictures. As for ISO, you can set it before and during but when you change your ISO during movie recording, the recording will stop automatically and you'd have to press the record button again to resume.

It really depends. To tell where your camera was manufactured, look on the bottom plate of the camera. There is only one label with information on it and it will say "MADE IN X" (where X is the country of origin).

Answer:
The outer shell of the camera itself is a polycarbonate material that has been in use since the introduction of the N8008, but with a better finish and rubberized surfaces where gripping is necessary. That lends itself to a more stable handling experience than with a smooth finish and no rubberized surfaces. The interior frame of the camera itself may possibly be the magnesium alloy construction used for their autofocus camera bodies. I may be incorrect about this. You can also do an online search for more information, but be sure to check multiple sources and to not take just one source's word as gospel about the camera's construction. They may also be mistaken or be making assumptions when they don't have the full picture, so to speak.

You can take pictures using the D3100's LCD monitor instead of the viewfinder. There is a Live View switch by the upper righthand corner of the LCD. This allows you to toggle between using the view finder & the LCD.

Keep in mind that using Live View will drain the battery quicker than if the viewfinder is used.

Answer:
Yes, they will fit your camera because they have the F mount. However, cameras such as the D3100 do not have a focus motor in it so they require the lens to have the focusing motor – an “AF-S” lens. While these bodies can use a lens with no focus motor (an “AF” lens) you would have to manually turn the focus ring to bring the subject in to sharp focus.

You need AF-s lenses to autofocus on your camera. Although the 35-80 will attach and you will be able to use it it is not an AF-s lense therefor you will have to manual focus it.

Answer:
If you're using the kit lens, make sure the switch on the left side of the lens is switched to "A" or "M/A." Also, make sure you are letting enough light into the lens for it to properly focus.

Answer:
When looking at the pictures you cant delete, does it show a "key" icon on the picture in the upper left corner? I had this issue on first use and it turns out I had inadvertently "locked" the pictures so I couldn't format or delete the memory card because the photos are set to "read-only" and protected. When viewing the pictures in question, the AE-L/AF-L button just to the right of the viewfinder is the "lock" button. Pressing it again will "unlock" the photo and you can then delete them.

Not aware of how to do this with any camera settings on the D3100. Best bet is probably using a remote control shutter release.

Answer:
The release mode determines how the camera takes photographs: one at a time, in a continuous sequence, with a timed shutter-release delayor with reduced camera noise. Both options cannot be used at the same time.

What is the best way to use get the average exposure using a D3100? Coming from 35mm film I used to use an 18% grey card to get the base exposure and run from that but I with the new DSLR's using white balance I am not so sure this is the correct way to go anymore.
Can anybody elaborate on this?

Thank you

Answer:
Cameras in General, and especially your D3100 are much smarter these days. It'll do the work for you most times. The only caviot to that is indoor lighting which tends to add a yellowish cast. On the White bal setting, try to remember to switch to indoor lighting (and back to sun outside) and all the other will likely look just perfect without you doing anything. Of course, the thing being I often forget to switch it back to outdoor lighting white bal. Make sure to look at your results carefully on the LCD.

Answer:
Yes, there are underwater housings for the D3100, but they are very expensive. Are you considering going diving or just snorkeling? Either way, to protect your investment in your equipment, you'll need a professional-grade housing, which can run several hundred if not around one thousand dollars. You can do an online search for retailers or manufacturers for a housing to suit your needs and budget.

Answer:
Honestly, there is no real right or wrong answer to this question: It's a matter of preference. Do you plan on carrying lots of equipment with you (multiple lenses, flash units, accessories, etc.)? Or, do you plan to travel light? If you're a working semi-professional,a medium-sized camera bag would be good. If you're just a casual photographer, a simple padded fanny pack should suffice. However, if you are always traveling and you carry all of your gear with you, a rolling hard case is the best way to go because of the hard shell and the padded foam inserts that will help cushion your delicate equipment. Go to a camera store or a sporting goods store and bring your camera with you to try the size and fit of the bags in question. Only you know which bag is going to best fit your needs and budget.

Is the Reference Manual that you can download online newer/updated than the one that came on the CD with camera kit?

The codes on the back page (lower-right hand) from the CD are:
SB0L03(11)
6MB09211-03

The codes on the back page (lower-right hand) from the version I downloaded from the website are:
SB0G01(11)
6MB09111-01

Answer:
Although I don't know what their numbering and version system is for their documentation, from what I see in the example you provided, it might seem like the version from the CD is a more current version than the one that was downloaded. My reasoning for this is that the CDs documentation letters and numbers are higher than the downloaded PDFs. That the SB0L03(11) is higher than the SB0G01(11) and the 6MB09211-03 is higher than the 6MB09111-01, it would seem to reason that would be the convention. Again, I can't say for sure this is the case, it is just an educated guess.

I think it clips on the cord so it controls how much voltage goes through the cord I would let a friend who knows what he is doing do it or if your still not sure of my answer whitch I am not possitivaly sure myself I would take it to the camera shop and ask someone there. And thats for a car battery charger it maybe a surpresser for the radio too!
