Nikon D3100
I purchased the D3100 as a 'light weight' alternative the the D3 I normally use , as I planned for a 10-day backpacking trip to Philmont last July. The D3100 camera preformed flawlessly the entire trip. I had no issues with battery power management even though I purchased two additional batteries. Nor any issues with dust gathering on the sensor since the camera had a sensor cleaning function built into the camera. The simple UI controls for adjusting the flash, made the pop-up flash perfect for adding fill light for those difficult lighting situations. My only regret was that I didn't bring 2-D3100 cameras as it was frequently out of my hands being used by all the boys on the trek. JHM

Finally got my 1st DSLR!
my D3100 arrived this afternoon and I came home to get familiar with the settings and give a tryout. Let me tell you that my desires to ever go back to the days of my 35 film is long past now. Light weight, quick to snap and use as easy as my point and shoot Coolpix. If you have the desire to get into a digital SLR then I am going to highly recommend this for what ever you have a need for, the photos I will attach are my first with this, I'm very impressed and want to learn more. Thanks Nikon

This past weekend I was taking photos just fine, several of them in fact. I went to take more photos a few days later and after 2 or 3 the shutter sounded like it was taking an eternity and I was getting overexposed photos. Severly overexposed photos. I would leave the camera on a tripod in bright sunlight and still couldn't take a picture of a fence without it looking like a white blob. I've tried changing settings including my ISO (because that's the only thing I changed from the weekend until then). My battery was running a bit low so I tried recharging it, that didn't fix anything. I reformated the memory card and that didn't work. I cleaned my lens, that didn't work. I tried resetting factory settings, that didn't work. Is there anything else I can try? Is there a flaw with my camera?

I am a new D3100 user. I have been trying to take pictures using the Aperture and Shutter modes, using the thumb wheel to change the aperture or the shutter speed. My pictures, no matter the setting are always near black. Bright objects can be discerned but that is all. I tried to change the ISO setting but pictures are still super underexposed. What am I doing wrong?

I would take your camera back to the place you bought it from (if it was a local retailer) and show them the results that you get when you shoot so they can verify that the issue is real. If you bought it mail order (over the internet), contact them and e-mail them your results as proof. Get the RMA number and ship it back for an exchange. It sounds like you may have a bad CMOS sensor in your camera. But, as a final check, take a look to see if the exposure compensation values has been changed such that it is producing the results that you are seeing.Jun 22, 2011 by

I am using a D3100 with the 55-200 VR lens. I was trying to get some pics of hotair balloons. I would like to set the focus without having to have the camera autofocus since the autofocus only works if I hit the autofocus point on an object. Is there a way to get it to focus on "infinity" or is that not available. Thanks

I do not believe there is any way to set a limiting range on the consumer 55-200mm VR lens, unlike the older AF 80-200mm f/2.8D ED-IF lens where you have a little switch that will limit its focusing distance. However, if you want it to focus on infinity, you can always just set it to manual, turn it to the infinity mark and leave it there (you may wish to tape it in place to avoid any creep or accidental movement of the focusing ring). However, I should also point out that using the focusing point is better because it will ensure that the subject is in focus. Otherwise, there is no special feature to do that which you are asking about.Jun 22, 2011 by

or... you could follow the lock focus, recompose, shoot practice. that is, use one of the sensor points to focus on a balloon, press the shutter button only halfway so that focus and exposure are set, then, while holding down the shutter button in the halfway position, move your camera to have the composition you want, then press the shutter all the way down.Answer:
Change the lens to manual focus and move the focus ring all the way to the right. Commonly in lenses with a Distance scale will show you infinity focus.1 year ago

On a mid-range DSLR such as the D3100, there is no simple switch you could slide or a hole that you would push a pin or paper clip into to simply reset the camera. What you need to do is press the MENU button and scroll down the selections to reset your Shooting Options (under the shooting menu or the camera icon) and Setup Options (under the setup selection or the wrench icon).Jun 22, 2011 by

no. the B&W option is a postprocessing option, so the actual image you're taking is still an RGB color image (and the raw files always are), which is converted to B&W afterward. if you really want to use B&W to the max, take color images and do B&W processing in photoshop where you have a say in how you process the different channels to monochrome.Answer:
Go to the menu then to shooting menu and then select picture controls, select monochrome and then ok.This is ok if you just want a quick b&w picture taken but you would get much better results converting it afterwards in what ever software you use.

my guess is that you left the Auto ISO function on, and shooting in shutter priority. turn off Auto ISO (any decent photographer can figure out what ISO to use in what conditions), and try it that way.Answer:
It more than likely isn't the camera or the lens. It most likely going to be a setting. Try switching your camera to Auto mode and see how that works. Another cause could be that you may have the MP turned down as they should be on one of the higher settings.Jul 7, 2011 by

For me, this camera has been an eye opener. I went from a point and shoot to this camera and I have not been disappointed in the least. It takes some practice to learn the camera, but it also has an Auto setting which will allow you to use as a point and shoot when/if frustration sets in. I think this is an awesome beginner to intermediate camera for those who are making the switch. I don't know how well the uploaded images look, but I took this butterfly picture with the D3100. I hope this helps you make a choice.Sample Photos & Videos

In my point of view, it depends if you think you're already good enough to have a DSLR and you think that you wont waste your 700 buck, then yes, you are ready to have a DSLR.If you have doubts on you, not really being good enough and you wont take photography seriously and you just want to buy a DSLR just for fun, you better just stick to point and shoot cameras.

Yes, you can use the C-PL circular polarizing filter on your D3100. If you look in the back of the User's Manual, it says that you can use the C-PL filter, just not the regular linear polarizing filters (as would be used on manual film cameras). Linear filters interfere with the autofocus capability of the camera.Jun 22, 2011 by

You can use a polarizer with the 3100,but it has to be a C-PL circular polarizer-not a linear polerizer. And it has to be a Nikon polerizer, because other makers may interfere with the autofocus or the electronic rangefinder.Hope that this helps you out!Mar 5, 2011 by

Yes, there is a Mirror Lock-Up function when you press the MENU button. You need to go down to the Setup Menu (the wrench icon) and scroll down to the Mirror Lock-Up selection. This is easily found in the menu when you look through it, as well as in the User's Manual that came with your camera. It is worthwhile to take the time to read through the manual as it explains what many of the functions are and how to use them to good advantage. I highly recommend doing that as it will increase your working knowledge of how your D3100 camera works. It's really an amazing piece of equipment once you learn what it can do!Jun 22, 2011 by

Unfortunately, none of the equipment that you listed is compatible with the D3100. I also have the AF 80-200 f/2.8D ED-IF lens, but unless all of the lenses have the AF-S designation (for Silent Wave Motor), they will have to be focused manually. They don't have a pinout from the body on the D3100 to drive the motor in the lenses you listed. However, all of the camera's functions will still work with those lenses, just not the autofocus. Also, I have a Speedlight SB-25 and, after doing some tests, I found that it doesn't talk with the camera correctly and it just seems to dump the entire charge when it fires. You will probably need to buy the SB-700 or the higher-end SB-900 to go with your D3100.Jun 22, 2011 by

Answer:
You can check under the Tech Specs at the Nikon website to see what it says about lens compatability for any camera model. But, basically, unless it's an AF-S lens, you won't have any autofocus function for the lens or 3D Color Matrix Metering II on the D40. The same goes for the D3100. So, you will probably want to get the most modern lens(es) you can afford to go with the D3100, which means any AF-S type lens, and most likely it will be a G lens. The VR feature is optional, so you don't have to buy that kind of lens unless you feel like it's a good thing or a must-have.Jun 25, 2011 by

You can check on the Nikon website to see what their documentation says about accessories and equipment compatability. But, in short, the SB-400, SB-600, SB-700, SB-900 Speedlights are what are compatible with the D40X. In particular, the SB-900 is the top-of-the-line flash that would have the reach for such focal lengths that you speak of. It would be the equivalent successor of the SB-25 and SB-26 that I used with my film cameras and my 300mm f/2.8 when shooting night football games.Jun 22, 2011 by
